View Full Version : So, how about that royal family?

I like how they give us a holiday. Do people outside of the UK get the holiday? Perhaps in the Commonwealth, maybe?

Now that Kate's registering, I can finally say there is a royal family member that "I would".

:( I just checked, we don't get a day off for it...

I'd rant about who our head of state really is and that it's our right to get a day off for whatever is going on over there, but I'm going to bed! :D

When I first heard the news I was pretty happy for them, William seems like a nice guy and Kate is fairly hot. But man oh man, I knew it would happen but the constant news coverage over the last two months has driven me insane. Thanks for the day off though, it's a day less Jury Duty for me.

We don't get a day off here, but since we're on the other side of the world it'll be happening on our Saturday. I don't know yet whether we're getting live coverage, but I'm fairly sure it's being televised.

I'll probably be watching. I like a bit of pomp, ceremony, heraldry and grandeur.

General feeling here in the slums is lies somewhere between apathy and indignation that we should care about and celebrate two people from a family of unelected rich toffs who've never so much as stepped into the valleys in their lives, lest they catch 'peasantitis'.

I'm going to be having such fun on the 29th. Seriously I work in the Oxford Circus Flagship HMV you know the one with the protesters outside of it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khdkv9tQopI) And the Islamic extremists and the BNP ect have all decided they want to turn central london in to a warzone on the wedding day.

Still I gain an extra days holiday for working it but I don't get extra pay to go with.

I saw this exclusive exposé about how Kate dresses the same as some other royal chick. I mean goddamn the "media" have gone to town with covering everything royal these past few weeks. There was a whole story devoted to how Kate has been stressed and lost weight so she had to have the ring resized.

Important enough that local news stations in the US took time out of the show to tell us about some casual dresses Kate bought on her shopping trip today. I don't get a day off of work because I've university finals, so you all enjoy your days off while I'm sat in a (probably) blisteringly hot library fretting over whether I can stop editing my dissertation or something. I know some friends of mine are having a garden party which started off as something apparently ironic and is now involves so much stuff that it's beyond a joke.

I'm generally relatively ambivalent about the whole thing. I wish them well and think it's nice, but I'm really not that bothered by it.

I for one find it funny how pissy people get over the notion that something admittedly trivial for them but nonetheless not bad news is somehow getting more coverage than the constant barrage of depressing news we have to be told about on a daily basis.

There's not caring and then there's going around telling everyone how RAGE you are over it. The former is fine, the latter just makes you look like a big grump.

I watched the whole thing, and I thought it was very sweet. Also, Kate and her sister are both gorgeous. Meanwhile Beatrice and Eugene, oh God, what the smurf happened there. Finally, it was nice to see the country be allowed to smile for once. For those that did not, don't worry, it only happens around once every thirty years. The wars and disasters, sadly, will probably go on for the rest of our lives.

I think there was no passion because they are a very private couple. They don't like being in the spotlight. So they weren't gonna go into a full passionate tonguefest infront of millions of people

And that dress was far from simple. The detail on it was incredible! BoB summed it up with the disaster that was Beatrice & Eugenie though xD For once, it was a Royal affair which wasn't frumpy and full of doom and gloom.

I have to say, it amazes me how excited the Americans have gotten over it. You guys seem to care more than we do!

Overall, I'll be proud to have them as King & Queen of England. Especially seeing as, according to one newspaper, the first thing they requested as a newly married couple was a cup of tea ;D

To be honest, ive been living here for 15 years and don't care about the royal family, but its not like im against them either. I WAS very glad for the extra day off though, and our road had one of the biggest street parties in the UK I think. I mean, it turned into a full on festival rave!
Its pretty much a student only road, which was legally closed off and the organisers even got a booze licence.
I thought it was going to get lary later on, but didnt at all really, everyone was just enjoying themselves.

Eh, we pay for them, yeah, but at the same time they bring in tourism and while the event may have cost a lot, the amount of money spent by tourists and the amount of money spent by the royal family (and the Middleton family) means they are giving a lot of the money straight back. So long as they spend the money we give them, I'm not that bothered. If they held onto the money, that would be a problem.

I really wish we would dump the british queen and be an independent nation. It's been a thousand years already.

Every time the royal family visits my tax dollars get spent on them. Incidentally apparently tax payers did not pay for their wedding!

We need to get them all to play Portal. The ensuing inappropriate remarks about cake would lead to a revolution far better than that one in France a couple centuries back.

I never understood the whole 'the royals bring tourism to the country' argument. When I go to London, I see Buckingham Palace, not the Queen. That, and actual interesting royal appearances in London only occur maybe once or twice a year, so surely there would be no point in visiting London on the other 363 days of the year then?

Loony BoB

I doubt there would be as much tourism coming to London / the UK for Buckingham Palace and other such royal locations if it were not for the royal family living in them and so on. Basically, Buckingham Palace is the place that people visit, but I imagine the royal family is what makes people want to visit Buckingham Palace (well, for the most part).

Right, but the point is it's historic. True monarchs lived there, not just figureheads.

And it's pretty.

Yeah ur right about that. I still think at least a big part of the attraction is the fact that some form of a monarchy still exists here. Not for me mind you.

Not really. Aussie tourist attractions aren't ones you go to because of royalty. British ones are ones you go to because of royalty. The Sydney Opera House (I don't know if this is royal?), the bridge, that big high tower in one of your cities, the weird rock formation in the middle of the country, Seaworld-type things and Australia Park are why people go to Aussie. Not to mention the Great Barrier Reef and the many beaches and the hot weather.

What do people know Buckinham Palace as? "The place where the Queen lives." :p

EDIT: As for people who say that they visit Buckingham Palace because it's where the "true monarchs" lived - er, you do know it was only built in 1705 and only passed on to the royalty in 1761, yeah? Did the monarchy even use power then? I thought most of it went to parliament around those times.

It was implied in the previous posts that due to the existence of the royal family, everything existed. So like, all the sights in London never would have happened if not for the royal family. If not for them, ya'll never woulda got on the boats to come here. It'd be like, Spanish or Dutch up in this joint.
