The last riddle thread has gotten so large and unweildy that I can't load it anymore. So here's the new one:

The rules are the same:

1) Only one riddle can be solved at a time.

2) One guess per post.

3) Giving hints is optional.

4) Whoever solves the riddle gets to post their own.

5) If the solver refuses to post a new riddle, the riddler can select another person to go, or leave it up to the next person who posts.

Ranzien has the next one.

YAY Go Rantzien!

Jiro
05-04-2011, 04:09 PM
I see you closed the thread before I could. Well played, old chap!

BG-57
05-04-2011, 04:15 PM
I like to keep the forums tidy. Plus, it's fun to kill my own threads. :D

Hollycat
05-04-2011, 04:17 PM
will it be archived or deleted?

BG-57
05-04-2011, 05:32 PM
Not for a while. It'll slowly shuffle to the bottom of the thread list as other threads are made or updated. Did you leave something behind? ;)

Rantz
05-04-2011, 05:52 PM
An easier life with no fatal surprise
No need to be scared of the stare in those eyes
A cold place, a gold place, a glory untold place
A little bit goes far to prevent the worst case

Hollycat

Rantz

Nope.

BG-57

Enemy Away materia?

Rantz
05-04-2011, 07:38 PM
Negative!

FFIX Choco Boy

The little cottage at the base of the Great Glacier?

Hollycat
05-04-2011, 09:03 PM
pressing square to stay alive

-JJ-
05-04-2011, 09:12 PM
Chocobo farm, maybe.
The Glacier thing sounds like the right answer.

Rantz
05-04-2011, 09:13 PM
Nope, but the Great Glacier is involved.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-04-2011, 10:23 PM
Making icicles drop in the GG cave, so you can reach that one treasure?

Rantz
05-04-2011, 10:37 PM
Nope.

-JJ-
05-04-2011, 11:20 PM
Erm, the place (Cavern) in Great Glacier where you can go back to outside of the Great Glacier by rolling? (Or whatever the hell Cloud was doing).

Rantz
05-05-2011, 12:14 AM
No. I might mention that while the Glacier is involved, it's only marginally so.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-05-2011, 12:19 AM
The Snowboard game at Gold Saucer?

Rantz
05-05-2011, 10:13 AM
Also marginally involved, but it's not the answer. ;)

FFIX Choco Boy
05-05-2011, 11:29 AM
The snowboard game in general, then? Meaning both the GS and GG iterations.

Rantz
05-05-2011, 12:12 PM
Nope.

Hollycat
05-05-2011, 12:58 PM
the baloons

Rantz
05-05-2011, 01:39 PM
Not the balloons.

Crop
05-05-2011, 04:37 PM
Is it the place with the statue face in the rocks that you land in after the snowboard game (when you go flying off at the end the end)? It's quite close to the area you need to go if I remember, which would fit part of the riddle.

Rantz
05-05-2011, 06:01 PM
Nope, sorry. It's not a location.

Khimbar2775
05-07-2011, 12:55 AM
washing your hands when talking to the girl that "gives" you the alexander materia?

Rantz
05-07-2011, 01:52 AM
Nope.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-07-2011, 01:59 AM
The crazy wind things in the Crater? The ones that make you fight enemies if you touch em.

Rantz
05-07-2011, 02:18 AM
Sorry, no! Tell me if you want a hint.

Is it Tifa consoling Cloud in the Lifestream at Mideel?

Rantz
05-07-2011, 12:56 PM
Nope! The answer is something tangible (in-game, of course).

FFIX Choco Boy
05-07-2011, 01:35 PM
Kind of makes me think it's a materia for a summon... Bahamut ZERO?

Hollycat
05-07-2011, 02:47 PM
the lab in the mountains

Jiro
05-07-2011, 04:08 PM
I have a couple of ideas here, but I can only guess one of them.

Is it the Final Attack materia? The riddle is making me think that you don't have to fear death because you have auto life set up.

Rantz
05-07-2011, 06:22 PM
None right, but Jiro is slowly getting closer.

MrSchpagge
05-07-2011, 10:32 PM
First, a late congrats to Rantzein for solving the riddle, which turned out to be tougher than I thought it would.

As for the answer, I'm gonna say Ribbon.

Rantz
05-07-2011, 10:43 PM
Thanks! It's not the Ribbon.

Khimbar2775
05-07-2011, 11:38 PM

BG-57
05-08-2011, 03:28 AM
Neo Bahamut?

Shinwa Tsuki
05-08-2011, 03:59 AM
An easier life with no fatal surprise
This might be referring to Cure, Regen, or an enemy ability.

No need to be scared of the stare in those eyes
This makes me think of an ability that would bring harm by eyes.... like Stare?

A cold place, a gold place, a glory untold place
the first part refers to the Great Clacier, the second part refers to the Gold Saucer, while the third part is puzzling for me.

A little bit goes far to prevent the worst case
A little bit of an item goes far to prevent either death, a game over, or other negative aliments.

Rantz
05-08-2011, 07:12 AM
None right.

An easier life with no fatal surprise

This is not what the line is referring to, but...

Most of this is pretty accurate. And yeah, as for the third part of the third line, I think I may have sacrificed a real clue for a rhyme :jess: A better clue might have been "a place of broken hopes" or something.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-08-2011, 12:16 PM
Broken hopes would be Corel.

Karifean
05-08-2011, 12:47 PM
Safety Belt?

FFIX Choco Boy
05-08-2011, 01:57 PM
Kari, I think you've got it.

Prevents Sudden Death(line 1 and 4), Petrify(line 1 and 2), and Slow Numb(line 1 and 2).

Jiro
05-08-2011, 02:00 PM
I thought for a moment it might be monsters who cast Death-Sentence or Petrify, but I did some research and it didn't really yield anything useful.

Rantz
05-08-2011, 03:30 PM
It's called Safety Bit, but it is indeed correct!

An easier life with no fatal surprise - Makes you immune to Sudden Death
No need to be scared of the stare in those eyes - and to Petrify and Slow-Numb
A cold place, a gold place, a glory untold place - You can get one from Great Glacier, Gold Saucer and Rocket Town
A little bit goes far to prevent the worst case - A little "bit". :hahaha:

FFIX Choco Boy
05-13-2011, 12:19 AM
Phoenix
Ramuh

So, summons?

Hollycat
05-13-2011, 12:26 AM
nope, just one thing

Jiro
05-13-2011, 04:53 AM
Materia Keeper comes to mind for some reason.

Hollycat
05-13-2011, 02:53 PM
nope

Foo
05-15-2011, 10:02 PM
Its Junon. Or at least the part where you're climbing up the electrical tower to reach the helipad.

breath of life - you have to revive Priscilla after she is attacked
tower of lightning - The electrical tower
waters of death - the water around the tower
fortress of flight - at the top you reach the helipad / hanger where Highwind is

Hollycat
05-16-2011, 04:24 AM
you are less than a n inch away from the answer to the the riddle as a whole.

Shinwa Tsuki
05-16-2011, 05:04 AM
breath of life - Priscilla and saving her life
tower of lightning - that lightning tower
waters of death - the sea
fortress of flight - the helicopter

I'm going with Mr. Dolphin.

Jiro
05-16-2011, 08:48 AM
If it's not Mr Dolphin or Junon then I haven't a goddamn clue.

Hollycat
05-16-2011, 02:10 PM
mr. dolphin is within a cm!

Melissaur
05-16-2011, 02:52 PM

Percillia! or however it's spelled

Hollycat
05-16-2011, 04:35 PM
Pricilla, and that is correct, she is in junon (lines 1-4) and gives the party shiva (the queen)

Melissaur
05-16-2011, 04:41 PM
WOO! Alright! Let me make a riddle right quick!

ALRIGHT! Riddle ready...

With newly stolen confidence
you must be quick to act
for you only have one chance
to see this striking character.

Pray you don't fall asleep,
and don't forget to speak up.
Missing out would be a grave mistake
and now we wouldn't want that.

Striking character makes me think of Scarlet and the bitch fight.

Hollycat
05-17-2011, 02:32 PM
wait, is it when you play as cloud as a child and normal cloud goes to give sephiroth the black materia?

Melissaur
05-17-2011, 03:15 PM
No to all so far

Hollycat
05-17-2011, 03:56 PM

Melissaur
05-17-2011, 04:03 PM

Hint: it's in the first disk

Hollycat
05-17-2011, 04:22 PM
With newly stolen confidence- something to deal with steal, which is first gained right after you fight Apps under Don Corneos house
you must be quick to act- ok, so you have to be quick to see this
for you only have one chance- one chance, subway train?
to see this striking character.- .... hmm...

Pray you don't fall asleep,- still gotta be quick, perhaps if it is an enemy they can put you to sleep
and don't forget to speak up.- dont forget to do it, or they can cast silence
Missing out would be a grave mistake- ... hmm..
and now we wouldn't want that.

Is it the guy on the subway train who gives you something if you talk to him?

Melissaur
05-17-2011, 04:26 PM
SO close. You're in the right area.

Hollycat
05-17-2011, 04:29 PM
lets see, people in midgar.......

someone in honeybee inn? there are several striking scenes there

-JJ-
05-17-2011, 05:02 PM
Is it the enemy in the train cemetery that you can steal Striking Staff from?
They cast sleep and silence, laser eye too if memory serves.

I can't remember the name of the them but they have a chariot.. and are undead.
Sorry if someone already said this.

Melissaur
05-17-2011, 06:59 PM
Yes it is! Eligor.
You steal the Striking Staff from it with the new Steal materia. It casts sleep and silence, and he is only in the Train graveyard which you can't go back to after you leave.

-JJ-
05-17-2011, 07:51 PM

I'll give it a shot-

The Journey to the Northern Cave? It's a long shot.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-22-2011, 12:49 AM
Nope, not the journey to Northern Cave. Young Cloud has been the closest guess so far.

Melissaur
05-22-2011, 01:11 AM
Great... Um the date you go on in the flash back?

MrSchpagge
05-22-2011, 02:40 AM
Cloud's promise to Tifa to save her if she's ever in trouble?

FFIX Choco Boy
05-22-2011, 02:40 AM
Closer.

Edit: Schpagge posted same time as me, so I didn't see it, but he's got it.

MrSchpagge
05-22-2011, 03:14 AM
Woot!

I've gotta give some credit to The Fresh Prince though; if he didn't bring up the flashback I wouldn't have got it.

Riddle time:

Sometimes the meek can triumph where the brave cannot,
And signs of weakness will bolster one's strength.
Sometimes you've got to run away to face your problems.

Is it hitting Escape to flip around when Ambushed?

Shaibana
05-22-2011, 12:28 PM
Jeez... :S i suck at this

Shinwa Tsuki
05-23-2011, 01:25 AM
Sometimes the meek can triumph where the brave cannot,
I'm thinking a lower level trumps a higher level where the answer is concerned.

And signs of weakness will bolster one's strength.
Elemental and status weaknesses help the player win the battle.

Sometimes you've got to run away to face your problems.
Running when faced with a back attack will let you face your opponent. Doesn't work for being surrounded.

I am going to guess a back attack where the enemy has a weakness of some element or status, and that enemy is of a higher level then you.

Just throwing it out there.

FFIX Choco Boy
05-23-2011, 01:59 AM
Shinwa, if you're right, then we really need to think of better riddles, because they are just getting more and more obscure and specific by the moment. Eventually we're going to be guessing at a single pixel in the game. >.>

Shinwa Tsuki
05-23-2011, 02:15 AM
Yeah, I don't mind if we have to deal with Thingfish riddles again - at least his are a challenge, especially for those involved with solving that one FF9 riddle which was so difficult it required it's own thread.

Or BG riddles, they are somewhat easier then Thingfish's but still complicated.

I am a bit surprised that we can't incorporate the other games of the FF7 compilation. That would expand the horizon for those creating the riddles.

BG-57
05-23-2011, 02:33 AM
Hopefully I give enough hints that its not impossible. :greenie:

My view on riddles beyond FFVII itself is, if they were to be included, they should be explicitly mentioned by game because not everyone has played the spin off games (like yours truly).

Hollycat
05-23-2011, 02:59 AM
its because few finish CC and very few play DOC

MrSchpagge
05-23-2011, 03:40 PM
Sir Cloud has part of it, but not the answer.

Hollycat
05-23-2011, 05:08 PM
when you are ambushed you can press run away and let go and then you are facing your enemy and wont take as much damage and battle is like normal and stuff.

Jiro
05-24-2011, 03:11 AM
That's what I said :jess:

Is it the Temple of the Ancients where using your original equip is actually stronger than other equipment? I have a feeling it relates to that, what with all the meek triumphing over might.

MrSchpagge
05-26-2011, 11:09 PM
Nothing to do with the Temple.

Sir Cloud figured out the third line, but that was just one part.

Shinwa Tsuki
05-28-2011, 03:08 AM
That's what I said :jess:

Is it the Temple of the Ancients where using your original equip is actually stronger than other equipment? I have a feeling it relates to that, what with all the meek triumphing over might.

Truly? I can't recall, that and I haven't play the game in a while.

BG-57
05-28-2011, 10:25 PM
There's a temple in FFIX where that happens, but I've never tried initial weapons in the Temple of the Ancients.

Shinwa Tsuki
05-30-2011, 03:10 AM
There's a temple in FFIX where that happens, but I've never tried initial weapons in the Temple of the Ancients.

Ah, seems I'll have to try it myself. Yes, it does happen in Ipsen Castle in FF9.

Jiro
05-31-2011, 07:28 AM
I'm probably just thinking of Ipsen's Castle xD The riddle has me stumped though!

Shinwa Tsuki
06-01-2011, 05:43 AM
It has stumped my as well.... perhaps we can get a hint?

Carl the Llama

[TR][TD]The Boss fight at the end of Midgar.

Sometimes the meek can triumph where the brave cannot,

The Meek will triumph because Cloud will steer clear of the people attacking him on the bike race leading up to the boss fight.

And signs of weakness will bolster one's strength.

Back attack running away?

Sometimes you've got to run away to face your problems.

Before you can fight the boss you have to run away from the Shin-Ra.

If you put your party all in the back row then they start in the front for that battle. The sign of weakness is hiding in the backline, but it actually makes you stronger.

I think you have it KD.

The Grangalan enemies? The smallest ones are called Grangalan Jr. Jr. and drops the least gil, the middle ones only have one Jr. in their name and drops a bit more, while the big one is simply Grangalan and drops the most. So while they don't drop a lot of gil, the "older" ones drop more.

Or one could reason another way and say that if you kill the Grangalan before it reproduces it doesn't give a whole lot, but if you let it reproduce and then kill the offspring, you'll get a good deal more. That way it "improves with age" too, in a way.

Unlikely I know but... Sephiroth in his final form, one might consider him stingy as the final battle you get no EXP from him but you do get to see the ending, the do I improve with age, maybe could be a reference to the level of your party, if you level to 99 his strength is increased, but only if you are level 99.

BG-57
07-21-2011, 02:42 PM
It's not Sephiroth in any of his forms.

The lines are refering to the external meanings of the monster's name, not in-game.

Resurrection!

Reading through all the hints for this riddle, I'm wondering if it might be some kind of mythological reference. Like one of the names of the enemies might be a mangled reference to some mythological character who fits the description posted in the riddle. Midgar Zolom, for instance, is a mangling of Midgarðsormr from Norse mythology - I know Midgar Zolom has already been guessed, but I'm wondering if there are any other enemies whose names are mistranslations of mythological names. Am I on the right track?

BG-57
10-13-2011, 03:30 AM
Welcome aboard!

It's not from mythology, but you have the right idea. Lines 1 & 2 refer to the origin of a particular product with this name, while lines 3 & 4 refer to something else with the same name that's consumable.

The rather questionable answer is "Hedgehog Pie." How a hedgehog is "stingy" is beyond me, but "pie" is the only consumable item that appears as the second word of a monster's name. Pies don't generally improve with age - actually, they tend to go bad - but the number "pi" does become more accurate as you use more decimal places. Alternately, as the concept has grown older, we've found more accurate decimal places for it.

TwilightLord
10-13-2011, 01:23 PM
Ahh, of course, that makes sense. And hedgehogs are stingy because they have spines. Spines that sting you. Therefore they're stingy.

I'd say you got it, congratulations.

BG-57
10-13-2011, 02:07 PM
It's not Hedgehog Pie, but you're close.

Think drinks.

TwilightLord
10-13-2011, 03:02 PM
Well, wine improves with age, but I can't find any monsters with names that relate to wine... or any other alcoholic drinks (or drinks at all), for that matter. Or maybe there's some kind of brand that I'm not familiar with that's referenced in one of their names.

Edit: The only answer I could think of is Scotch. Scotch isn't a monster, but his name is also a type of whisky (which does improve with age), and also a name for someone from Scotland, and the Scottish have a reputation for being stingy.

BG-57
10-13-2011, 11:19 PM

Alright! Here's my riddle. It's my first attempt, so go easy on me.

I have no heart,
But I am far from heartless.

I have less than most,
But I can do more with less.

I can be killed,
But I can never die.

If used right, I can unleash ultimate power,
But who I unleash it on is a different story.

So use me wisely,
Unless you wish to take the risk.

Who am I?

By the way, if you give an answer, I want the reason why you gave that answer. If you give an answer and no reason, I will just ask you why you think your answer is right. Unless you can give me a satisfactory reason, I won't say whether you're right or not. This way I know you're not just randomly guessing and getting lucky.

Melissaur
10-14-2011, 08:14 AM
Nevermind my last guess. I'd like to say Cait Sith

He a "robot" so of course he doesn't have a heart, but he does sacrifice himself for the party so he is caring
again a robot doesn't really have anything
He "died" when the temple imploded in on him but came back later as a second Cait Sith
He has a limit that can cause instant death on the enemy
But he also has the instant party killer limit!

TwilightLord
10-14-2011, 09:44 AM
You got it, the answer was indeed Cait Sith.

"I have no heart,
But I am far from heartless"
As you said, he's artificial so he doesn't have a literal heart, but he is caring so he isn't heartless.

"I have less than most,
But I can do more with less"
This refers to the fact that Cait Sith only has two Limit Breaks, whereas all the others have seven (except Vincent, who has four). However, Cait Sith's Limit Breaks are more versatile, and can have more results, so he can do more with less.

"I can be killed,
But I can never die."
As you said, since he's artificial, even if he "dies" another one can just be made.

"If used right, I can unleash ultimate power,
But who I unleash it on is a different story."
Again, as you said, this refers to two results of his Slots Limit Break, Game Over (instant death to all enemies) and Death Joker (instant death to all allies).

"So use me wisely,
Unless you wish to take the risk."
"Risk" is another word for "gamble", and Cait Sith's Limit Breaks are based on gambling.

"Who am I?"

The answer is Cait Sith.

Very good. Your turn!

Since it's an open round, is it okay if I take it again? I actually had a few riddles planned out beforehand XD

Here's my second riddle.

Beyond the door that no key can open,
The rejected one lies in wait.
Two faces has he,
One of power and one of wisdom.
Yet if you possess the courage to face him,
He may show the way to a great secret.
Can you tell me of whom I speak?

Karifean

Lost Number?

Shinwa Tsuki
10-16-2011, 08:44 AM
It seems to be the Lost Number. Here's why:

Beyond the door that no key can open,
It is within the safe in the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim, and a safe has a door which no key can open (at least not all safes have a key or a keyhole).

The rejected one lies in wait.
It is largely implied that the Lost Number is a rejected experiment.

Two faces has he,
A creature with two faces, or more correctly, two different sides.

One of power and one of wisdom.
Power refers to physical attacks while wisdom refers to magical attacks. (This analogy I agree with.)

Yet if you possess the courage to face him,
It is an optional side Boss you can fight.

He may show the way to a great secret.
The great secret that is referred to here is likely to be Vincent.

Can you tell me of whom I speak?
Lost Number.

PS: Forgot to mention that by 'show the way' in the second to last line, it refers to the key for unlocking the door to the room (or is it the hidden door to the basement, can't recall) that let's you get Vincent.

TwilightLord
10-17-2011, 05:04 PM

Shinwa Tsuki

Haha, odd how one should make it clear their reasoning when it is desired by the riddler.

Here's my riddle - which is centered for no reason:

Motion sickness,
Unreasonable rage,
Both are cured by this.

I can't see a thing,
Someone turned the light off,
Restore me with this.

All I ask is for some quite,
Wear this and pipe down.
What is this?

Your lips on my skin,
That is all I need...
Please change me back!

The sand wights my eyes,
It is time for bed.
This dust? What is it?

This is all I'm going to write for this riddle. Take note, these stanza's are for different things. I would like the collective answer, and the individual answers. As, much I would like to have the guessers reasoning, I won't bark though.
