Inspired by the 'Advice Row' thread. :)
Here is the actual advice, commentary deleted, from Baz Luhrmann's song 'Everybody's Free (to Wear Sunscreen)'. How much of the advice do you take? I think the answers to this would provide an interesting insight to what each of us are like, so yay if that ends up being the case.
Wear sunscreen.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.
Don't worry about the future.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts.
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy.
Remember compliments you receive.
Forget the insults.
Keep your old love letters.
Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.
Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either.
Enjoy your body.
Use it every way you can.
Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines.
Get to know your parents.
Be nice to your siblings.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on.
Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you.
Don't mess too much with your hair.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.
As for me...
Wear sunscreen. - I do this, but not nearly as often as I used to since I live in Scotland now. :(
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. - Well, I'm not as young as I once was - admittedly, this song is aimed at me when I was about 13 years old, though, so there you go. But I enjoy the fact that I'm not an ugly old man... well, not to everyone. ;) And "yet". :p
Don't worry about the future. - I do whatever I can to avoid worrying about the future, I have to say. There are occasions that I still, however, do it.
Do one thing every day that scares you. - I don't do this. I'm content without freaking myself out. xD
Sing. - I do this often, even if I'm crap at it :D
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. - I like to think that I am not.
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. - I like to think that I don't... anymore.
Floss. - I don't. =x I just brush and sometimes use mouthwash.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. - I try to not do this. The only time I get jealous is when it comes to money. I'd say it's more envy than jealousy, though. I probably do get jealous over some things, I just can't think of any at this time.
Remember compliments you receive. - I do try to do this. =]
Forget the insults. I do try to do this. =x
Keep your old love letters. - I do this.
Throw away your old bank statements. - I do this if they're very old. I keep a few recent-ish ones purely on the basis that they are useful for proving your identity with certain companies and getting bank details from.
Stretch. - I love stretching!
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. - I don't. I have some idea of what I want to do, anyway. But I take it step by step, no massive long term ideas, really.
Get plenty of calcium. - I could probably use more of this, I guess. My diet isn't exactly exemplary.
Be kind to your knees. - I... think I am? *pats his knees* "Good knees, keep it up." >_>;
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. - Hrm, I don't know where I stand with this. I guess I don't. I get cocky over some things and I get down over some things, but not to extremes unless it's something I consider very important.
Enjoy your body. - I do! ;D
Use it every way you can. - I do. ;D
Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. - I'm not! :D
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. - I enjoy dancing but I don't have any dancing ability whatsoever. So I do dance in my own living room... when Danielle isn't home. :shifty: I don't think my dancing is anything remotely close to either aesthetically pleasing or entertaining. It's just "what are you doing, Daniel?"
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. - I... can be guilty of not doing this on occasion.
Do not read beauty magazines. - I don't read the beauty parts of magazines, and the only beauty magazines I even flick through are the ones in Bravissimo. There's nothing else to do when waiting for Danielle to finish trying on clothes. :( Beauty magazines are the worst magazines ever.
Get to know your parents. - I like to think that I do this to a decent extent. I could know them more, but there are some things I don't want to know. xP
Be nice to your siblings. - I am most of the time!
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. - While tricky considering that I live overseas from all of my childhood friends, I do try to keep in touch. Online friends? Yeah, I do what I can to keep in touch with those I have been closest to.
Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle. - Internet, hi.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. - Haven't done that!
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. - I lived there for a week, doees that count? :D I don't know what is classed as 'Northern' though. If there is some general line that Americans know of. I was in Los Osos (outside of San Luis Obispo, I think).
Travel. - I do! I want to do more of this.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. - Yeah, I know. :(
Respect your elders. - I try to remember at all times to give respect to everyone who I feel hasn't given me a reason to not respect them.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. - I do not. I'm very self-sufficient. Which makes living with Danielle and both of us having a full time job to be a massive boost. :)
Don't mess too much with your hair. - I don't. :aimsun: All natural, all boring, baby. :p
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. - I should probably exercise patience a little more.
