View Full Version : Fan Theories

Are there any theories that you find make a work of fiction a lot of fun to experience a second time? Or maybe you like to make theories yourself!

As for me, I like the theory that Edea's ice attack actually kills Squall (http://squallsdead.com/) at the end of Disc 1, and everything after that is all some weird limbo dream. Even R = U is pretty interesting! Of course I don't think these are canon, but pretending they are gives the story a whole new experience (which is pretty hard to do during your eighth time through the game).

For theories I actually believe, "'James Bond' is just a code name" comes pretty close.

I didn't like the Squall's dead theory becuase it looked to me like the guy/girl who did it hated FFVIII and wanted to rewrite the story. I've never liked R=U, becuase I just can't see enough evidence for it - G=S is more interesting, but R=U needs to be true for it to work, so I can't use it. Also, am I the only one who notices that Ultimecia and Rinoa have different voices?

Obviously I am a huge fan of Future Esthar's theories, even though I don't agree with every single thing he says, most of it sounds plausable, and it's really fun to read his stuff. Even the parts I'm not 100% convinced are correct I can easilly see how he came up with the theory based on what is true in the game. The ones I really like are Well Organized Time Compression, that Hyne might be possessing Ultimecia, and that an Ellone based password is hidden in the Ragnorak code. Also, even if it isn't Hyne, I sometimes theorise that maybe Ultimecia was possesed by someone, something FE pointed out about the final battle helps support this.

I don't know who came up with it, but I like the theory that FFIX's Vivi is actually named after Final Fantasy.

I have made various FF based theories, but some of them (J=U) have been disproven already, while some (that the clones in FFVII are really the surviors of the fire 5 years ago turned out to be true. Others are still open for debate. I'll post them one day, even the ones that I no longer believe so you can see them (I'll be sure to state that I no longer believe them though.) As it stands I have theories about The Movie that Laguna was auditioning for, and I sill believe that Eyes on Me is both about Julia and Laguna (from a storyline perspective) and Squall and Rinoa, (from a this is a fictional game, and we need a soundtrack for it perspective).

Other non FF based theories are good too, although the only one I can think of the time that isn't one of mine is that not only does the final scene in The Sopranos mean that the main character died, but the entire series was hinting towards how he was going to die from the get-go. (I'm still undecided whether I believe that or not, or even if I think he's dead or not).

I've theorised about a couple of things, for example Final Destination. I've decided that the Turn Around song in part three has more than one meaning in the storyline...

Best theory I ever made was about FFVI (http://forums.eyesonff.com/final-fantasy-vi/124960-not-greatest-airship-world.html)

Other than that I like to rant on about random possibilities in games and movies with no real conviction.

Cuchulainn, kindly take a chill-pill, and relax!

We do have lives, but during them we sometimes theorise. If you don't like it why are you even in this thread? I respect that you have your own opinion, but your going too far with the way your expressing it. People make theories because it's fun to do, and sometimes you don't even have to look for them, they just strike you suddenly. I don't go play/watch something thinking "Now, let's see if I can find any deeper meanings today..." I watch/play it normally, but sometimes I'll notice something and think "Hang on...!" and I'll keep a look out for other things, while still watching/playing it (it's called multitasking) and sometimes I am right - I already stated in this thread that one of my theories turned out to be 100% correct as it was revealed in one of the Ultimania guides, which I have never read, and I was still new to FFVII at the time.

Some writers are alright with it, I have heard them say. If I was a writer, I'd enjoy reading theories of my work - if a completely wrong one starts to get out of hand, I may release an article to put a stop to it, I'll admit, but one thing I'd enjoy it. Some writers even insert things to do with existing theories into their work as a joke.

I take offence to you calling FFVIII an emo game, because you have absolutely no idea what an emo is, at all - I bet you think it's all about acting depressed for no reason, and self harming because self harming's cool. Well I got news for you pal, that's not what emo is.

Yeah, they're both extremely far-fetched and very obviously not canon. I regard them about the same as all of the bull:bou::bou::bou::bou: metaphors that high school English insists are in classic novels, even long after the author says "no, no that's not what I meant." Some of them are interesting, even if they aren't what the author had in mind.

Um, that you're wrong.

Canon Immigrant - Television Tropes & Idioms (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CanonImmigrant)
"The Expanded Universe is a wonderful place, where new ideas can frolic without having to worry about fitting into the canon. However, sometimes an idea is so interesting that the people who create the canon decide it deserves to become real. "

I Knew It - Television Tropes & Idioms (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IKnewIt)
"It's well known that wild fan theories are prone to being Jossed.

Sometimes, however, the opposite happens: after much speculation, a fan theory is finally confirmed in canon, proving that the trees were, in fact, epileptic all along. Cue the perpetrators of the theory exclaiming: "I Knew It!. Told you so!" "

Word Of Dante - Television Tropes & Idioms (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WordOfDante)
"Word Of God is stuff the creators have said is true about their universe, even though it's not in the actual work.

Word Of Dante is stuff the creators haven't said is true about their universe — but everyone assumes it is true because an independent authority, scholar of the work, or Big Name Fan has said it — often with supporting arguments. It's a kind of ascended Fanon. A more literary criticism friendly technical term for it would be deuterocanon."
(counts because everything thinks this :bou::bou::bou::bou: is true anyway)

It doesn't prove you're wrong, it just proves you don't understand the media as well as you're implying you do. On each of those pages that you probably didn't look at are examples proving Julian's point.

I agree that many people spend too much time on these strange theories, but if they're having fun the who cares. When it gets crazy like so-and-so is so-and-so's father and they cram it down your throat as fact, then I think it's okay to get your panties in a bunch.

If you want to get down into it, you proved that it does happen sometimes. It doesn't happen often enough that it should be so incredibly obvious. Cuch proved his point as well, that he's not as big of a nerd as you because he doesn't read tv tropes. That's what he's getting at, mainly, that people have too much time on their hands.

I actually agree with Bunny here. Both are as bad as each other. Basically 2 sets of super fandom which take the buscuit a little too much. I mean, I find it perfectly acceptable to watch/read/play something and theorise on what happened between episodes, or get to grips with the full expanded universe backstory. However, when you sit and create your own scenarios for what happened, or some crazy longwinded ludacris ideas that develop from millisecond showings of a character looking the wrong way in a party, it becomes ridiculous. And, going back to Bunny's point, I personally find it ridiculous when people can name each member of the Premiership Football League, their current and past managers and which transfers occured when.

When people try to force their views on me I just feel sorry for them, sorry that they are unhappy in what they are doing and get angry at us for enjoying a simple life, if your happy spending time on an internet forum speaking with people who share the same views with you and have intelligent conversation then what's not to like? I don't know anyone that does that. If you know them, throw them onto the 'wasting their lives' pile. I love football, follow it, wouldn't miss a game. I read about my team on a lunch break at work. I check football scores, watch matches. By that default I know every United player & most other teams. I would spend about, on average, 1/20 of the time on my love for football that an insane 'theorist' fan spends on, basically making :bou::bou::bou::bou: up & dilluding himself in the process. You socialise at games, you go out. If you fail to grasp the difference then you may, in fact, be a silly sausage.

No, I'm sorry, you have it all wrong.

You are not the paragon of justice, truth, and honesty that you want everyone to believe. What you are is an arrogant fool who sits on his self-established throne judging all individuals you feel are lesser to you, because they do something you disagree with. You tell your own brand of truth and do your best to, almost always pathetically, get others to agree with you. You believe by providing endearing and amusing responses that you will win favor among the greater masses of this forum. But you are not, in any way, the sole arbiter of truth that you want to be.

Who the hell are you but some insignificant sod judging anyone else for doing what they want with their life? Really? You aren't that special. Get over yourself.

Oh and har har, the entire bit about me was really fun but entirely wrong. Next time you are attempting to pass judgment on another individual try to make it have some actual merit.

And you don't even have to respond to this. We both know exactly what your response is going to be: arrogant dismissal in the form of a joke. Get a new shtick.
