What are these for? I notice you get points after each battle but you never get a grand total at the end (I don't mean exp points) Any one know what these are for or are they just there.

You get 5 stars for finishing a battle within a set time but, is there any real reason to finish a fight within the time limit? better loot etc?

Just started a new playthrough and this question has bugged me since my 1st game on ff13.

I'm pretty sure you're more likely to get items and stuff if the ranking is high. It also affects how quickly your TP charges. You also get an achievement/trophy for five-staring all of the Titan's Trials missions, I think.

Cool,thanks for clearing that up.

Not just the titans trials but all hunts.

The higher the amount of stars you get, the better chance you have of the monsters dropping loot. At Five stars you raise your chance for getting rare drops like the synthesis materials from Adamantoise. On the flip side, getting 1 or 0 stars raises your chances of getting the Veil items that give you buffs before going into fights. So either way, you get a good item whether you do well or not.

Its not just how quick you defeat them, but the equipment you have equipped, for instance, I got a 5 star ranking on when all my characters had level 1 weapon's equipped (changed just to get the 5 star) then went back with my ultimate weapons and finished him in half the time of the previous fight and only got 4 stars.

ya but i wasnt really talking about the time..
But when he (almost) kicks my ass and the whole battle is on the edge, than i get a good score..
and when im doing great, im all focused, and i know what im doing etc.. than i get a low score -.-
so i guess i have to play like crap to get some good scores :P

Question: Do the Guardian fights in that tower count towards the trophy? Because I didn't do so well on those and can't figure out how to retry them.

I have this as well, I think it just randomly assigns a rating just to mess with us.

Ratings are time based, how close you are to the target time (weapons and stats will affect target time, but it will always be the same with identical setups).

So, if you rush, and kill him quickly, but nearly die yourself, that's a 5 star. If you take your time and totally dominate the battle, that's a 0 star.

Since I am of the opinion that overall speed is the last thing that should ever enter into an RPG, I am not much of a fan of the rating system.

to me that just doesnt make sense at all :S .. Shouldnt it be a Good thing to dominate the battle? Not-almost-dying means u know what ur doing etc, shouldnt that be rewarded? >.<

Yeah, it would be cool if stars were based on damage dealt vs. damage recieved, targeting enemy weaknesses, avoiding status, etc. but it's not. All about speed!

Thanks the focus groups and jaded game critics who constantly whine about how slow and clunky RPG battle systems are. That and all the people who love X-2's battle sysem but can only describe why with it being "fast". :p

Oh, I see it now. FFXIII's battle system is supposed to be the 'evolution' of X-2. Or maybe the combination of X-2 and XII. Changing jobs in battle, chaining attacks, use of a quick charging ATB gauge. Well that's balls. Way to take something great and bastardize the best aspects of it.

Fast is fine, having the rating system depend on that alone is not.

The scoring system is a good idea and encourages more efficient play but it can't be implemented without frustrate the player because of stuff like Lvs, grinding and pre-battle buff items.

FFXIII implements slots and command decks AKA paradigms rather command menu, it is not an evolution or combination of X-2 and XII IMO.

Paradigm decks = dressphere grids

X-2 and XIII are pretty damn similar. Really the big difference is in X-2 you customize the job deck and commands of each character individually, when in XIII you do it for the entire group. Selecting each individual command is not much different than selecting a string of commands to be executed at once. The ATB still charges all the same. It just makes things faster.

The point of ratings is nothing more than to give you a challenge. Yes, it is good to dominate battles - but in all honesty, it's very easy to do such a thing as well, far easier than effectively managing your HP while at the same time beating the enemy to death swiftly and effectively. It should be noted that at no point does the game force you into getting a high star rating, so you don't need to worry about that if you want to play the game safe. However, if you want achievements/trophies, then this is something you can do after you have beaten the game - focus on ratings to see how fast you can obliterate the enemy. Many people can think that this is rewarding recklessness, but it is not - it is more giving you something to do and encouraging you to try different tactics to see which is the most effective at defeating different targets. I quite liked the system - not because I like fast battles, but because I like challenges.

And let's face it, in XIII, there aren't many challenges due to the lack of sidequests. I enjoyed figuring out ways to beat all the marks with five stars, though. Although the Jumbo Cactuar was a bitch.

Eh, I carry Random: Instant Chain on almost all my characters, and I figured out very swiftly that getting it to activate was much easier than bothering with any strategy on Jumbo Cactuar, especially since the Target Time is so insanely low, no matter what your gear or stats are.

Huh, I didn't know they affected what items you got after battle. I figured they only mattered on the Hunts/Final Boss.
