View Full Version : This line sounds a bit weird - is it a translation error?

As much as I love FFVII, its translation wasn't 100% perfect, but most of the time it was the names of things that suffered rather than dialogue itself - even if there was a spelling or gramatical error, you could still understand what the characters were saying.

However there is a line in the game which, while I get it, just sounds wrong;

I don't know who you are but... you don't know me.
Cloud says this line to Reno when they are in Sector 5. The structure of what Cloud's saying sounds odd to me. It starts to make sense, but then it goes off somewhere...

It would make more sense if you gave us the whole dialogue of the scene. Just one line sounds out of context and my memory of VII is not what it used to be. :p

I too remember the scene where Cloud greets Reno in the church,
but it never made sense (sence if you're using master command, hah)
to me either. Reno says "Don't mind me" or something if approached,
I think cloud says "That suit" or something similar after "You don't know me..."

I don't get why Cloud says that line, and it should be set out like
"I don't know who you are, but... you don't know me..."
But that wouldn't make much sense either,
but I think that was the first FF translated without Mr. Woolsey himself,
So one could have imagined the lines we could have seen if he stayed!

I would love to see a Woolsey-fied honey bee inn scene with Mukki.

FFVII has several poor translations in it like other FFs so it's possible that it's a poor translation.

Seems fine to me. It's basically, "I don't know you, and you sure as tit don't know me so stfu and diaf."

Something like that.

Given the sheer size and scope of the game, I've always overlooked the translation errors and just brushed them off after having a good chuckle over them. I actually saw someone once with a t-shirt that said 'This guy are sick' on it.

To expand on my point; the line both makes no sense, and makes perfect sense at the same time to me.

I understand that Cloud's basically saying that he has no idea who Reno is, but the fact that Reno doesn't know Cloud either seems irrelevant. The way the scene takes place sugests that Cloud was about to say something like "I don't know who you are, but you got about five seconds to **** off!" like he was basically saying, either get out, or prepare for a fight, but then he suddenly ends it with "you don't know me" in a manner that seemed really forced, and then the borderless voice says "I know you!" (this is before we learn who the voice is) it is a very strange scene.

It always seemed to be that there was some kind of subtext that was badly relayed in this scene. I felt it would have made more sense if Cloud had said, "...I know you.", or "you don't know me..?", or maybe it wanted to be "I don't know who you are but... ... (shakes head) ... you don't know me."
It seems as if he really wants to say that Reno should somehow know who Cloud is. I don't know.

I remember this part. I also remember not quite understanding what cloud meant when he said that. Saying it was a bad translation would make sense since there are more than a few in game. Nothing will ever be as bad as "this guy are sick".
