I figured that this would be a good way for people to expand the music they're listening to. Just post some bands that you don't think people on this site would have heard of, and maybe some facts and the genre so people can browse to their tastes a little more easily.

Karnivool - These guys are easily my favourite band and luckily they're starting to pick up some steam overseas after years of being fairly popular in Australia. They're prog. rock/metal and both albums are amazing (the first being a bit heavier). They also have some beautiful film clips and if any of you guys are drummers the second album is like ear porn.

Second album; YouTube - ‪Karnivool - All I Know‬‏ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18SUFbABxNQ)

First Album; YouTube - ‪Roquefort Annandale Sydney‬‏ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XiJnWTrcjU)

I Mother Earth - I'm not too sure how popular these guys were/are, but I'm only going by the last album they did, quicksilver meat dream, which was absolutely amazing. They got a new singer for that album and completely changed from being psychedelic/fusion to more Alt. Rock, which was a real improvement imo. Definitely worth listening to if you're into that sort of stuff.

I don't have a good idea of how well known these guys are, but it's the best I can think of for now. Their name is fun., and they have the whole indie pop/rock thing going on. Nate Ruess (the lead singer, formerly of The Format) has an awesome, unique voice which, I think, makes the band special.

At Least I'm Not as Sad (As I Used to Be) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nemst-oB3Po) is the song that got me into them. If you like Panic!, they're currently touring with them and the two bands have collaborated on this song: Come On (http://bananasmusicclub.com/post/5550152211/bananas-would-like-to-believe-in-all-the)

Another band just came to mind, too, even more fitting for the topic - Heartless Bastards. They're pretty small, but damn are they good. I'm just gonna let them speak for themselves. I think you'll like these guys, Phil. ;)

@Manus, I'm listening to 'Midnight Black Earth', it's actually really pretty; great typing music. I don't think there's anything hipster about recommending bands to people that they may not otherwise find though, in my experience most hipsters want to keep their underground bands to themselves and talk about how they were a fan 'back when they released the first EP'.

@Rantz, that second band is cool. I initially thought Regina Spektor when I heard it, but the other songs are pretty varied :)

EDIT:

Some More Australian Bands, in the similar Genre's to what I posted earlier.

The Butterfly Effect - Crave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnPyDklAk7Q)

Dead Letter Circus - Disconnect and Apply (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnrvBHDZjzE&feature=related)

Goon Moon is also a very good band. It's the side-project lead by Chris Goss who is the producer for Queens of the Stone Age and Jeordie White, aka Twiggy Ramirez, the former bassist and now guitarist of Marilyn Manson. Twiggy was a large part of the 'Manson golden-era' in terms of composition, and he still functions pretty well in this band, suggesting Manson's decline in quality is likely due to the fact that he's an asshole to the guys that make the music for him to sing. Anyway, they make pretty eclectic music and it's pretty experimental without being too out-there and conceptual.

Also, again,
MILLION DEAD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CHF-hkZKbw).
Frank Turner is a god. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1NyWbhCxZE)
If you prefer folksy, go Frank. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xfdGXA62ZM&feature=related)
If you prefer hardcore, go MD. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUJFgTyEP8M&feature=related)

Frank Turner is getting pretty popular now though with some recent sets in the Download and Reading festivals. It's Million Dead that gets overlooked.

DD; I'm not generally a fan of punk but that Gave My Eyes to Stevie Wonder song you posted is really good, reminds me of something that would be on an old Tony Hawk PS game xD And I saw Geordie White playing bass for A Perfect Circle when they came out, had a listen to that band and it's not too bad....for a bass player >_<

RE; Awesome, good to hear that they're making a name outside of Aus, they deserve it.

I've actually been a fan of them for a while, like a year or two now. I hope they spread their good music everywhere :choc2:

It is a bit. xD I gave my Eyes to Stevie Wonder is probably my favourite song of theirs, but if you liked it I really recommend given them more time. Unfortunately they broke up a while ago which prompted Frank to go solo. I love White so much partly because the persona he created for himself in the late 90s was so erratic in interviews and it made for some cringe-worthy moments. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTsGuZfEeFw)7:06 for the start of the weirdest segment.

What kind of music is popular these days?
It's not Gaga, but Midwezt (http://www.reverbnation.com/midwezt) are one of my favourite musicians to listen to.
I'm also quite fond of Kina Grannis (http://www.youtube.com/user/kinagrannis?blend=1&ob=5), Julien Niel (http://www.youtube.com/user/trudbol), and Nick Pitera (http://www.youtube.com/user/goonieman86#p/a/u/0/Zp1BYzIVi0U).

You should probably only pay attention to what I post if you like metal.

Periphery (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CugnVOTPAM)
I guess they're kind of djent, but I'd say it's experimental/progressive metal.

Architects (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKTG_oc3o_w)
IDNAN actually turned me on to this group. Wikipedia lists them as metalcore, I'll just stick with that for the song I linked.

Nekrogoblikon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EF47ny4gBw)
A really cool band from Santa Barbara. They play goblin metal, it's rad.

This is Not a Game of Who are You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiNkc7g8i2A&feature=player_profilepage#t=51s)
Found out about these guys because I'm subscribed to the drummer on YouTube.

The New Regime

This is the current drummer from Nine Inch Nails' solo project. It's pretty freaking awesome music but as you can see from the video, the main drawing card is that he plays every smurfing instrument by himself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9xNhjFBlbI).

Awww yeahhh. fun. are wonderful. I saw them when supporting Paramore last year. And saw Frank Turner last year, and will be seeing him next month.

Motion City Soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFEQo_D_UsU) Basically, if you like emo, wordy lyrics but happy fast paced music, you'll love these guys.

iliketrains. They're not my favourite band, but I'm pretty sure people haven't heard of them! They're post-rock, and sing about interesting things like chess and polar expeditions.

Wow, you guys are -.-!

TV On The Radio is actually a generally well-reviewed band. They're not for everyone, but if you like rock music but hate bands that are getting boners due to their own Indie-ness/Metal-ness/Prog-ness, check them out!
