Hell, why not? Even as a kid I always thought they were a couple, and by now they'd have a common law marriage if it was a man and woman.

I like the idea. There's no reason to focus on it if they make them gay. To do it properly, they get married and then they're treated as a normal couple.

I'm sure the fall out from hate groups would be horrific, but that's the only problem I see with it.

I know gay couples that act less gay then those two. Just saying.

Do you and your roommate frequently happen upon each other in the bath/shower as though it were common place?

When I was younger I thought they were related, like siblings. Are they supposed to be grown men?

Yeah, they're grown. I'm not sure how old they are though. It's hard to figure out, seeing as Elmo has been 3 years old for at least 20 years. :\ I wish I would stop aging.

I could see Sesame Street doing it in, I dunno, maybe 10 years or so, assuming the whole gay marriage thing continues its recent trend

It'd be kind of cute.

I'd imagine Sesame Street would introduce a pair of new characters that also happen to be a gay couple than have Bert and Ernie marry.

If they aren't gay then they aren't gay. If it's with the intention of "making things gay to increase awareness of how gays are okay" then I'm not sure this is the way to go about it. If it's being shown to accepting families then they gain nothing. If it's being shown to less accepting families, they will tell their kids to turn off the show that has the homosexuals on it. Sadly. This would mean that young kids watch something other than Sesame Street, missing out on the values that exist within it, which would probably have made them more accepting of homosexuality anyway as they grew up... well, it'd help them, I guess, anyway. Hopefully.

But yeah, an interesting idea with good intentions I'm sure, but possibly not the best place to kick it all off. And I agree with the "if they aren't gay, they aren't gay" thing, too. I think it would be better with new characters rather than old ones.

I agree with BoB here. It's not really going to change anyone's view on the matter and they may even lose a good portion of their viewers who happen to be less accepting/not wanting to expose their children to LBGT yet.

JeganRX

If they want to do it, I say do it. This is hardly changing the characters, while being a nice slap in the face to the LGBT-fearing populace

Here's the thing, how many romantic relationships are featured on Sesame Street at all?

Here's the thing, how many romantic relationships are featured on Sesame Street at all?

For the 1988 and 1989 seasons, the topics of love, marriage, and childbirth were addressed when the show presented a storyline in which the characters Luis and Maria fall in love, marry, and have a child named Gabi. Sonia Manzano, the actress who played Maria, had married and become pregnant; according to the book Sesame Street Unpaved, published after the show's thirtieth anniversary in 1999, Manzano's real-life experiences gave the show's writers and producers the idea.[139] Before writing began, research was done to gain an understanding of what previous studies had revealed about preschoolers' understanding of love, marriage, and family. The show's staff found that at the time that there was very little relevant research done about children's understanding of these topics, and no books for children had been written about them.[132] Studies done after the episodes about Maria's pregnancy aired showed that as a result of watching these episodes, children's understanding of pregnancy increased.[140][note 19]

Speaking of Sesame Street and romance, does anyone else remember back in the 80s when Sesame Street had that huge multi-episode storyline where like... two of the characters got married? I can't remember which two. It was two of the human cast members. They had a wedding and everything and it was a super big deal. My mom recorded it on VHS.

Gosh I kind of miss that show.

Edit: Oh man PGs you answered my question while I was still writing my post. xD

I don't care at all about this issue, beside the fact that mindless bigots whining about gay people and the gay agenda is always entertaining. But on the way to work this morning, this issue was being discussed on a radio station I listen to. Some hick had called in and was saying that this is wrong because we shouldn't be teaching little kids about gay sex. And then the host said, in agreement, that Sesame street should have no relationships, period (though, despite his statement otherwise, he undoubtedly would not have cared if Sesame Street had another straight wedding). And I call bullshit.

It is acceptable for most of these people for their kids to watch shows with straight relationships, because otherwise there would be zillions of complaints about 80% of kids' shows. But show a gay couple, and they throw a fit about it being inappropriate. The whole "no relationships period" argument is a ridiculous rationalization. Showing a gay couple doesn't involve teaching kids about sex, and the very idea that parents say we should watch to "teach" kids about homosexuality just shows their bigotry, because it implies that it is something that needs to be taught about in the first place, instead of treated like any other relationship.

Ideally, there wouldn't be petitions like this, because there would be no issue of whether someone on TV was gay or not. But for now I support any and all attempts to throw the issue into the faces of the bigoted crowd to further stigmatize their irrational hatred (and also for entertainment). And by "throw in their faces" I mean "treat gay people as normal people," which apparently requires a hidden anti-American agenda to corrupt the country's yutes. I mean youths.

Also, Bert and Ernie are totally gay. It takes about two minutes of watching them to realize that. Gay kids could learn a lot from them about being gay.

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.

Wait

Where do puppets come from?
