If you could just spare a moment of your time, could you settle a debate for us? Myself and Del Murder (I lie of course, me an Del Murder never speak) were having a discussion on if soda is soda, or if it's pop, and although an age old question I feel we have never truly come up with an answer so I implore you, the Eyes on viewing public to provide a answer...

You can vote in the poll above and post here your reasoning should there be any!

I say pop even though I think it sounds stupid.

I have a friend from Scotland who calls it juice.

Im drinking juice. Oh yea what juice? OJ? Nah man, cola.

No wonder kids are so smurfing fat.

Pop if you really press me to choose, but honestly I just call it the specific name of the drink.

Soft drink [/obligatory australian answer]

Soda.

Soda is the only acceptable answer. Pop is only used in backwoods, typically mid-western areas that are too far from civilization to have many dictionaries. Even worse, "Coke" is used in the south, because people born in the south almost always have mental deficiencies and so are unable to distinguish between different types of soda.

sodapop

or more likely soft drink

And just because it never ceases to amaze me:

Fried Coke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fried_Coke)

Take care all.

It's weird, I have always thought everyone was crazy when they say this place says x and that place says y because I lived in those places and they didn't say x or y! But looking at that map, I lived in the one little square in the whole state that was different each time. Also lol at Californians being smug about calling it soda when it's pretty evenly divided between soda, pop, coke, and "other", in true California fashion xD

Anyway, I call it soda, and everyone I know but my Illinois grandparents does the same. They call it sodie pop. I've never known anyone to just call it "pop".

EDIT:

OMG FRIED COKE I WNAT

I've never known anybody in the UK to call it "soda".

I just call it whatever brand it is I'm talking about - coca cola, fanta, pepsi, sprite. etc

Jessweeee♪
08-23-2011, 08:58 PM
But what about when you're just talking about soda in general? Like "I'm in the mood for some soda. What kind of soda do I want?" Or "hey guys there are lots of sodas in the fridge" because you have twenty different kinds.

Jess
08-23-2011, 09:13 PM
Erm...I'd ask them if they wanted a drink, then I'd list what I have in the fridge as options. :jess:

As for in general, "I fancy a drink."

I don't know. Fizzy pop would probably be the most likely term, but I just don't.

Always I am left wondering if they even have soda in the Rockies; never too many test results on the east side of them. Do the surveyors get mauled and murdered by bears?

I've called it soda all my life. My grandma, who's from the Midwest, called it pop, as I remember she usually asks if we wanted pop when referring to soda. :p It doesn't bother me.

Anybody who calls it pop can't differentiate a noun from a verb.
