qwertysaur's adventure in Touhoumon: Blue Version

After getting lost during the summer in the region of Unova, among other fantasy worlds, (video games are much more enticing when you have no internet for the summer :|) I have a stable connection again and feel like doing a playthrough with all of you. Because I'm still in a pokémon mood, I am going to play a pokémon game, but not the usual kind. Together we will be playing a hack of FireRed called Touhoumon Blue version.

There are a few notes about this hack. One is that instead of pokémon you catch and raise various characters from the Touhou Project games. Because the entire pokédex is redone, there are quite a few interesting type combinations to catch, like Electric/Fire or Ghost/Grass for example.

Secondly the type chart is slightly changed, so you can get hit by a weakness that would not exist in the original game, or an attack might not be as effective.

Thirdly several moves are altered, in either name, type, effect or all three. So even though it is a pokémon hack it feels like a different game.

Fourthly almost all Touhoumon are roughly of equal strength (they have close to equal base stat totals), except for legendary and joke Touhoumon. So you can make your team however you want and not have to worry about the strength.

Finally the unique part about Touhoumon Blue is that there are almost no barriers that prevent sequence breaking. You can go to Mount moon before beating Brock, and the only limits to your movement that I know of are Viridian Gym and Victory Road can't be entered until you satisfy the normal conditions. (I'm not sure about Saffron City, you might still need to clear Silph co before taking on Sabrina)

So lets begin with how I will start this. (I am being lazy about this post with screenshots, next time there will be actual screenshots instead of just the sprites :p) For those who have no idea what Touhou Project is, it's a series of bullet hell shoot em ups where little girls rain pretty colorful patterns of death upon each other, all made by one drunkard named ZUN. They are really fun to play and the music is amazing to listen too, so you don't mind dying a lot while figuring out how to dodge the various patterns. I'll give a brief explanation of each character as they appear. Feel free to ask more if you want a more detailed explanation.

A) cReimu the Tiny Miko Touhoumon.

She is a Normal type, later becomes Normal/Flying and leans a good variety of attack moves. Also the most balanced starter. Reimu is the main character of the games, naturally talented but very lazy. whenever there is something going on, she will beat up whoever she finds and eventually find the cause of the incident, beat her up as well then have a tea party with her. (what the plot boils down to for the majority of the games) Her ability is the power to fly.

B) cMarisa the White-Black Touhoumon

she is an Electric type, later becoming Electric/Fire and makes a good special sweeper. Also she has the ability pickup, so she can be a very good source of money early in the game. The other main character, she meets Reimu's talent with a lot of hard work. A human magician, her magic focuses a lot on Light and Stars, with her signature attack being her Master Spark. (A huge laser) She also has a habit of stealing things claiming she is only borrowing them.

C) cSakuya the Tiny Maid Touhoumon

she is an Ice type, later to become Ice/Steel and has several attacks that can freeze the opponent, as well as the best defense of the three starters. A mysterious human maid who works in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, (more info on that later) where she serves her master without any question. Sakuya has the ability to manipulate time at will, usually she stops time to position her knives. Also a homage to Dio Brande from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

So please tell me my "gender" and which little girl I will take on my journey.

I'm not sure what Sakuya's final form will look like yet. :p I've only played up to Pewter city in this version as a test and I don't know what all the sprites are yet, because almost all of the sprites were updated from the newest version of the Japanese game. :p

I'll hopefully start this later today but first the tie between Reimu and Sakuya will need to be broken. :p

I know about that. Also that cReimu is found at route 4, and cSakuya is in Mt Moon. :p

I'm only going to catch one girl each area though, so it's all up to what everyone here wants me to catch.

Part One: The Journey Begins

Alright, we have a unanimous choice for the tomboy and cSakuya wins for the starter. Lets get this adventure started!

After the standard intro of grabbing the potion from my PC and walking into the grass, Oak drags me into his lab to give me my very first Touhou! My rival who is oddly named "Green" (Just went with the default because I felt like it:p) whines about me getting to pick first, but I ignore him and make my choice.

Look how sweet she looks, I think as I name her "Jessweeee!" (forgot to add that you can suggest nicknames as well, so I went with the first female member I saw on the who's online list at the time I was playing :p)

Docile nature does fit a maid. :p Green then grabs the closest Touhou orb to him and claims cReimu as his starter. Odd how he picks a starter that will be weak to mine once she evolves, but that is better for me in the end so I won't complain. Wanting to show off, he challenges me to a battle

The battle is fierce, with cReimu attacking relentlessly with pound, even scoring a critical hit that brought Jessweeee down to 1 HP. It was a good thing I grabbed that potion, and Jessweeee took out her foe with her own critical hit. I leave the lab and head north to Viridian city. On my way I encounter several different Touhou, and engage in combat with them. During this, Jessweeee levels up two more times and learns her first new move: Knife Throw.

At the Touhou mart in Viridian, the shopkeeper asks me to deliver a package to Oak. I shudder thinking about what an old man who studies little girls ordered, so I get back to Pallet town quickly to get rid of the box. at the lab, Oak decides to have me fulfill his dream of catching all the Touhoumon in the world, and gives me my own Touhoudex, as well as 5 Touhou orbs. I open the dex and look up Jessweeee

How cute, I say as I close the dex and walk outside. I then look at the grass and wonder which Touhoumon I should catch first to add to my team. On my way to town and back I saw...

Today there are 5 choices for me to catch, so vote for whichever little girl you want me to catch. Also feel free to suggest a nickname. Note that while most of the time wild Touhou will be female, there is a small chance that one will be male, and I am going to be catching the first one I see. The choices are
cMystia
Normal/Flying type. She is like Spearow. Common, and pretty average. Of note is her ability Diva, which only she has which increases the wild encounter rate. Mystia is a night sparrow, and her ability is to induce night blindness and to confuse humans with her singing. First appearing in Touhou 8, she is a random youkai that the player character beats up because she is in the way.

cAya
Another Normal/Flying. Aya is like Pidgey. Also common, but stronger than cMystia. cAya is very fast, and with her speed boost ability she will keep getting faster. Aya's ability is the manipulation of wind, and she first appears in a fanbook, and later in Touhou 9. A crow tengu, Aya runs a newspaper and is known to stretch the truth to make a story, making several others shy away from her to avoid being featured in her paper.

cChen
A ground type, Chen is the Rattata of this game. She will be showing up a lot as a wild Touhou, so get used to seeing her. Her ability is Run Away, which is very useful if I want to take any detours early on and survive the wild encounters I am not supposed to see until later in the game. Chen is both a Nekomata and a Shikigami, with her ability being Black Magical arts. She first appears as a random youkai the player beats up, and later she encounters the player in the extra stage, both as a midboss and an enemy projectile.

cKanako
Kanako is Grass/Electric, and she is a pretty solid wall that can also deal a lot of damage, especially since her types are strong against the first two gyms.She has the ability Pressure. Kanako is a goddess with the ability to create sky, and is the goddess of the Moriya shrine, which she took over from Suwako after defeating her in a war. She is the final boss of Touhou 10, where she transports her shrine to Gensokyo (the place where the Touhou series takes place) to collect faith, which triggers the plot of the game.

cSuwako
Suwako is Water/Ground, and like Kanako is quite strong, being focused on Special Attack rather than defense, making her a great special sweeper. She gets the ability water veil, and I find her sprite in this game to be quite adorable. :jess: Suwako is a goddess who has the ability to create Earth, and is the original goddess of the Moriya shrine, which Kanako took from her. However, she remained at the shrine due to her ability to control the local curse gods as well, which was something Kanako could not do. She is the extra boss of Touhou 10, fighting the player because it's fun.

I suggest you pick Aya or Kanako. Aya has a very nice ability while Kanako is, like you said, useful for the first gyms (which aren't as easy as they once were). Or just go for Suwako since you already have a defensive Touhou.

I'm at Mt. Moon with Marisa, cAlice, Sakuya and cAya :bigsmile: I think I'll drop cAlice though ,since she and Sakuya would both fall to rock and fire.

Oh and isn't the critical hit rate a bit high in this hack? I almost got killed at the first battle too. o.o

Go into the Touhou center outside of Mt moon and get a Fairy. It's the eevee of the game and you can get a Zombie fairy if you use a Fire Stone on it. :bigsmile:

yeah, dropping cAlice would be a good idea. If you go back to Route 2 you can get a cRan, who becomes part Psychic when she evolves, or you can wait grab cYukari later in the game who makes a really good tank and can dish out a good amount of damage as well. She is a pain to catch though because she loves to teleport away. :nonono: Also there is cReisen who is in Mt moon. :p

cReimu is the hardest starter to beat in the first battle by far. You have to use leer a couple times and get lucky, because her damage output is a lot higher than Sakuyas.

I'm playing on an emulator (actually the only way you can even play this game) and taking screenshots as I play :p It plays exactly like pokémon, just with changed characters to catch.

Sorry Lynx, I already played through the next part, but there are cKanako available on route 22 so you can vote for catching one there as well.

Some Touhoumon will evolve into women, such as Kanako. Others like Chen and Medicine will always be little girls. There are a few weird ones as well that will appear later in the game.


Part Two: Surprises for all

I look around at all the different types of Touhoumon around me and have some trouble picking one to raise. Do I want a cSuwako? Or maybe a cAya would be better.

"Might I suggest we catch the next one that we encounter, my lady."

I stare in slight shock that Jessweeeee suddenly spoke, not aware that Touhoumon were even able to speak our Language.

"If I wish to be an elegant maid, my duty must be to serve from the shadows in silence." She says as she spots a patch of rustling grass. "What is your command my lady?"

"Well I would rather be your friend instead of your lady, but try a knife throw to weaken it."

"As you wish..." and she quickly hits the disturbance, a cAya what was napping. Exited to make my first catch I throw a Touhou orb and jump for joy at my success.

I am at a loss for words, a relaxed cAya is the opposite of their natures to dart around everywhere. And a male is even weirder, he even wears a skirt. This journey will be even more interesting than I first thought, with a trap on our team

After buying some supplies at the Viridian Touhou mart, I decide to do some training with my team in the areas around Viridian city, which proves to be quite fruitful. Hinamori shows that while he may not be one to rush things immediately, he is still quite the capable fighter, even learning to make some whirlwinds using his wings.

Hinamori as usual is quite relaxed and greens cAya gets the first hit, but Hinamori take it and returns in kind. It is a close fight and Hinamori pulls ahead at the end.

Jessweeeee and cReimu once again stare down each other on the battlefield, and again it is a close battle. However, this time luck was not on Jessweeeee's side as cReimu lands a critical hit, defeating Jessweeee.
"My apologies... I failed..."

"Don't worry about it, I can finish this up" says Hinamori with an unusual look of determination. With a single well placed gust, cReimu is down.

Jessweeee is silent and looks to the ground, and Hinamori suggests that recruiting new friends to the party would be a good idea. But who to catch?

Grass/Water type, Sanae is pretty balanced, simialr to Reimu. Sanae learns more water attacks than Grass, and has very few weaknesses, only to Flying, Poison and Bug(one of the rarest types in Touhoumon). Her ability is Serene Grace. First appearing in Touhou 10, she is the shrine maiden for Kanako and Suwako, and fights the player as the stage 5 boss, with the ability to create miracles. Also playable in both Touhou 12 and Touhou 13, enthusiastic to hunt Youkai and gather faith for her two goddesses.
CMedicine
Grass/Poison Type, Medicine is poisonous to the touch, with her ability poison body. (renamed poison point) She is a staller, learning a variety of moves to weaken the opponent while they slowly succumb to the effects of poison. First appearing in Touhou 9, she is a doll turned youkai, and has the ability to manipulate poison. She seeks to liberate all dolls, and is very dangerous because she freely uses her poison any anybody who gets too close. Also is too childish to realize that other dolls are not exactly sentient.
CHatate
Psychic/Flying Type. Gameplay wise she is just like Aya, only focuses on Special attack over Physical. A crow tengu, she also runs her own newspaper. First appearing in Touhou 12.5, she is Aya's rival but her newspaper is less popular because she gets her information using her ability: Spirit Photography. She can use it to get images from afar, but only on things already reported on. Also her camera is on a cell phone developed by the Kappa.

List Two
cMystia
cAya
cRan
Ground type, later becomes Ground/Psychic type. Ran can have either the ability Inner Focus or Early Bird, and is pretty good at both attacking Physically and Specially. First appearing in Touhou 7 as the extra boss, she is a Kitsune who is skilled in both Black magic and Shikigami Rituials. She is the master of chen, and is additionally a Shikigami herself, to Yukari Yakumo. (more info on her when she appears in game :p)
Rinnosuke
Normal type, he is a decent physical attacker. also of note is because most Touhoumon are in their chibi stage, he has very high base stats until other Touhou start evolving. Appearing in the side comic Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Rinnosuke is a half youkai who can tell the function of a object if he holds it. He has a shop that sells goods from the outside world, but it's not very popular and he keeps all the good stuff he finds to himself. Also notable for being the only humanoid male in the entire series.

Gameplay notes. Hinamori is an adorable little trap, but he has perhaps the worst possible nature for Aya. he will still be quite fast though, as speed boost will make up for the stat reduction from his nature. I hate fighting cMedicine, because her poison body ability is so annoying. Also getting that screenshot of cSanae was a pain. It took a good 10 minutes for one to appear, then I got 5 to appear in a row. :|

Also for completion purposes I caught the other wild Touhoumon from route 1. If you choose to add a recurring Touhoumon to my party, I will catch a new one. I want to be able to get my rewards from the aids. :bigsmile:

Kanako and Ran! Although Remon puts forward a good point with Sanae, that could come in handy! How very annoying that the gym was locked! BUST YOUR WAY IN THERE :D

My vote goes to catching CSuwako, her water atacks have helped me big time.
she is really handy and in this area easy to train becaus her type is in the advantage.
She wil be a big help while fighting Brock!!

Just remember that cSuwako's water attacks are actually only good against cYuugi and cTenshi, as rock is not weak to water in this game. Kanako (if I catch her which I likely will as she has the most votes)and Sakuya can rip through him though, as Kanako's grass attacks and Steel is strong against both Rock and Ice, which will make quick work of all of Brocks team. However, Suwako rips through Lt Surge and Blaine later on. I have an ESuwako in my file of a different version of touhoumon, and she is one of my most powerful fighters. :bigsmile:

But there are no cSuwako found in either route where I can catch new party members, so I can't catch one for another couple of updates :(. (Next update will be exploring Viridian forest and then I'll give a choice of either exploring Route 3 or going to challenge Brock) I'll wait until tomorrow before playing the next segment.

Also Shaibana good choice on getting a Wriggle, she will tear through Sabrina as Sonicboom is now a pretty strong bug type attack instead of just doing 20 damage. :D

se got verry lucky at the dojo since multiple times one of the other members fainted while the enemy had just 1hp ... so Kisume finished it and took full credit for it :D

Part Three: Through the Forest of the Faeries





Finding new friends is always worth the effort, so we first head back to route 22 and immediately spot a cKanako hiding in the bushes. Although I have already caught one for the Touhoudex data, it looked to be a bit foul tempered and not a team player, so it doesn't count. :p Shaibana, welcome to the team!

Shaibana has shown to rip through any wind cChen around, which all felt inclined to attack while searching for a cHatate to capture for Touhoudex data. After working with Jessweeeee to take down a cAya, Shaibana learned a new trick!

Suddenly Shaibana spots something in the grass, and a very lively cRan pops up.

"Woah a trainer lady! The names Rangiku! I bet I can beat you to the forest gate! If you somehow beat me I'll even join your party!"

"This will be easy. I'm the fastest there is after all."

The race was no competition at all.

Rangiku wasn't exaggerating either. So. Many. Faeries. And a few random little girls mixed in for good measure.

Rangiku especially showed wrath against the faeries. Perhaps they pulled one to many pranks her one too many times, but she learned some new tricks to deal with them.

And wherever there are faeries, there are bug fairy catchers! Why they dedicate their efforts to these pests is beyond me, but they don't really think ahead. :|

That's an odd trade. A chibi for a final form. I'm going to pretend this kind is not insane and walk away slowly.

So now that we are in Pewter City, we can either challenge the local leader Brock like our Rival said he was going to do. Or we can ignore him and head to Mt moon. (I'm not going through the cave to Vermilion City because there is a rare level 30 wild Parsee there and she is scary and will destroy my team :()

Also who to add to the team for the forest? We have a lot of choices here!

cSunny Milk
Fire type. Below average strength. Abilities are Run Away or Vital Spirit. ability is to refract light. Uses ability to make herself invisible.

cLuna Child
Electric type. Below average strength. Abilities are Run Away or Pickup. Ability is to mute sounds around her.

cStar Sapphire
Water type. Below average strength. Abilities are Run Away or Water Veil. Ability is to detect motion around her.

Sunny, Luna and Star together are the 3 mischievous faeries. They work together to do two things. Pull pranks and be really good at playing hide and seek. (invisible + silent + knowing when someone approaches them) However, faeries in gensokyo are not known for their intelligence, and they are quite childish and short sighted. For example Luna will always use her ability when pulling a prank. The thought that a sudden unnatural silence could give away her presence has not ever crossed her mind. First game appearance is 12.8 where they are the bosses for stage 1, 2 and 3

cWriggle
Bug type. (very rare type in Touhoumon) Great versatile and powerful physical attacker. Ability is swarm. First appearing in Touhou 8 as the stage 1 boss. Wriggle Nightbug is a firefly youkai and can control insects. Her appearance confuse many who see her because she almost looks male. (remember, there are almost no males in Touhou, and Rinnosuke is the only humanoid one ever seen)

cAlice
Psychic type (branced evolution, can gain either Ice or dark as second type) and another defensive touhoumon. First appearing in Touhou 5 as the stage 3 boss, and later with an older appearance in touhou 7, again as the stage 3 boss. Alice is a youkai magician who controls dolls. She uses these dolls for many purposes; including fighting, cleaning, puppet shows and grenades.

E stands for Ex. Ex is a notation int he touhou fandom for someone powerful, as extra stage bosses are quite strong.
A stands for Advent. Advent comes from a doujin where any characters who have advent forms app
ear. I'll explain this more about them once they appear in my playthrough.
D stands for Dark.
H and F are unique and each only appear once. H stands for Hakutaku, while F is for Fundoshi.

i am proud to say that after 33:56 hours i defeated the touhou-league and i am now a true champion!! :')

my super team:
Yachiru (ESuwako)
Momo (EKisume)
Haineko (EAya)
Hinamori (ESakuya)

and Soi-Fon (EMeiling)

at the last moment i decided to swap my ReisenII (toushirou, its a male :3) for a Meiling, and that turned out to be a verry good move. at the first place i did that becaus she can learn Strenght and Rock smash, and those 2 moves just killed it in the first one of the league!!
i had her quickly up to date with the Exp.share.
took me about 4 try's before i defeated them all. wich at pokemon takes me 20 xD..

Now ive made a 2nd team wich will also be competing the Touhou-league when they're ready!

having this new team feels weird.. it just feels like they dont listen :o
