Of playable Final Fantasy characters (no villains etc) choose just 9 you would choose as main characters through a future Final Fantasy gameMine, not in order.

Cloud (FFVII) - Lets just get this out of the way. And he would have to be 1997 Cloud Strife not a Sora (Kingdom Hearts) hair cutted crying baby he is now. I want the full spikey headed jerk

Auron (FFX) - Why cant a character like this be the lead protagonist in a Final Fantasy game?

Cid (FFVII) - He lights dynamite using a cigarette still in his mouth. Welcome to the crew.

Ashe (FFXII) - We need someone to keep the whiners in place on our journey. And I found Ashe to be one of the stronger females in the Final Fantasy series who wasn't stereotypically wimsical or constantly in distress. Why the game paraded that hapless loser Vaan as the main character and not Ashe I have no idea.

Barret (FFVII) - Mr. T with a gatling gun for an arm. Welcome to the crew.

Tifa (FFVII) - Everyone could use some encouragement here and there as well as some eye candy. Tifa provides both.

Balthier (FFXII) - Sky Pirates. Don't go on dangerous cross world trips without one.

Lightning (FFXIII - Well, she looks cool, I guess.

Larsa (FFXII - Hes a kid but hes not annoying and hes intelligent and knowledgeable. Welcome aboard.

I am not sure if I understand the topic correctly. Are we picking characters from previous Final Fantasy games to appear in a future Final Fantasy game as themselves or as a new character?

I believe we're just transposing the characters as they are into a new universe. Think Dissidia (implying I've actually played and/or understand the plot of that game). Sort of the ultimate crossover fanfiction or homage.

I would want to include characters who are similar to see their interactions, while staying away from the lead character as often as possible.

Edgar (VI) and Zidane (IX) would fight over the pretty ladies, while Zidane and Locke (VI) discuss the finer points of being treasure hunters. Wakka (X) and Zell (VIII) would be the clowns. Auron (X) and Steiner (IX) would provide a contrasting view of the "guardian" type role. This would of course require me to bring in Garnet (IX) to give Steiner someone to protect, and we'll also say Rikku (X) to round it out.

There are so many other combinations though. Imagine a Yuffie-Rikku-Selphie party, good lord. Also somehow I managed to avoid bringing in any characters from VII, as well as any from XII (I thought I would inevitably put Balthier in there). Perhaps 9 is just too few!

9 characters from previous Final Fantasy games to appear in a future Final fantasy game as themselves, same personality etc

Sorry for the wall of text initially, I created the post using the PS3 browser and it did not recognize any of my spacing.

Interesting post from Jiro, very interesting party you have there. I chose my party from the five Final Fantasy games I have played, VII, VIII, X, XII, and XIII. Oddly I chose no characters from VIII though it is my 2nd favorite Final Fantasy game behind VII.

9 is a lot of characters.

1. Guy/Gus from FFII - He looks like a fairly handsome ogre, talks to animals, and I can claim that he is the uberest version of whatever in the heck I want him to be. He can cast Flare and smash his enemies 32 times dual wielding axes and swords and staves. Every time you hurt him, he gets stronger. Every time he casts a spell, e gains the ability to cast more.

2. Rydia from FFIV - She's so hot. Both men and monsters are totally enchanted by her. Aside from her unnatural charms, she can blast crap with summons and black magic. And her husband is a freaking ninja, so it isn't like you can just go kicking her around without worrying about a defensive man putting a shuriken in your face.

3. Barts from FFV - He can actually MASTER every single job class type in the FF world. Aside from the limitations placed on him by the FFV game engine, he is literally a one man everything in the FF world. Plus, according to some people, he was a ninja from the start!

4. Black Wizard from FF1 - I just think he's the absolute sexiest of all the black wizards. Kicking the hat was the best thing ever. Vivi (or whoever. I never played the game, and I only think I got the name right) never class changed! That hat and all the darkness and watnot makes Black magic look like a sport for sissies. The Bl. Wiz shows that death magic is as much classy as it is a mere class. Plus, aside from a nuclear arsenal of magic, he will rip you to shreds with a Cat Claw. Screw staves. CLAW!

5. Setzer from FFVI - Setzer was born to be a lead character. The dashing way he stormed the opera house, the ability to fly an airship. A man who lives life on the edge, placing everything on the stakes of a card game or a roll of the slots. Setzer is the freaking MAN. He's all style and all badass.

6. Relm from FFVI - She also deserves to have her story told. Possible connections to shadow. This lovely young painter helped to kill a god when she was a teeny tike. She could have all kinds of awesome adventures as a sexy, New York Style Bohemian (with crazy magical powers).

7. Green Onion Knight/Class Karateka from FFIII - I played a translated version that called the monk character a Karateka, and I just think the name sounds cool. Plus, he was a more unique style of monk that actually made good use of the nunchucks. It wasn't a preliminary to simply punching stuff. There is room for creativity here.

8. General Leo from FFVI - Well. For obvious reasons. He is the only person who can show Terra love, or something. And he's all cool and whatnot. I want to play with him more than just getting slain by Kefka.

9. RED(whatever number) - There's not enough dogs as main characters in FF games. He's kinda like Pluto in Disney. An absolute must until something better comes up.

YES! I made it to 9! This is what I do with my life!

I'm curious to see some sort of Crimson Skies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_Skies:_High_Road_to_Revenge) universe with all our airship owning friends. Setzer, Balthier, the Cids, etc. Could be awesome!

Oh man, I would go with the same theme as expendables, just iconic badasses all coming together, so...

Barret (VII)
Auron (X)
Shadow (VI)
Basch (XII)
Galuf (V)
Cid Pollendia (IV)
Guy (II)
Squall (VIII)
Steiner (IX)

I'd love to see some of the interactions here.

Ok, so I just put WAY too much thought into what I would make as the best party of 9 from the FF series. All games were considered except FF8 because I hate it, and I quickly eliminated FF13 because regardless of any in battle prowess they are all head cases.

Leader - Ramza(FFT)
The leader of this group. Not the most powerful character in the series, but he isn’t any slouch with a sword. Most importantly he is one of the best leaders the series, skillfully deploying the fighters at his disposal for the maximum effect. While most party leaders just seem to point their motley crews in the right direction I have confidence he can get the maximum out of the team.

Melee 1 - Edgar (FF6)
It may seem like an odd choice for the all star lineup, but he fills one important roll in the party, the engineer. You always need someone to fix all the technology that you come across / breaks down on you, and I judge him to be the most powerful of the bunch.

Melee 2 - Cloud (FF7)
A powerful melee fighter in his own right Cloud has the advantage over a lot of big sword fighters in that his material gives him great flexibility in terms of magic.

Melee 3 - Orlandu (FFT)
Once all my niches are filled the last spots to give away for melee are fairly difficult, with a lot of good options. In comparison to other characters I think he displays the greatest mastery of the sword, and I imagine his experience would come in handy in mentoring the other characters.

Long Range - Balthier (FF12)
Few and far between are the FF long rage specialists. In addition his guile is an excellent addition to the team. Charisma is something FF characters don’t always exude.

White/Support Magic - Yuna (FF10)
Not much going through the list of FF primary healing characters. Garnet from FF9 is kind of a blowey white mage, and although Eiko is a very good character imo I don’t consider her a very reliable team mate. I am going to give Yuna’s Summons the edge over Rosa here.

Offensive Magic - Terra (FF6)
One of the series most predominant magic users she also has a huge advantage in the versatility department. Black magic, white magic and able to actually pick up a sword to boot.

Offensive Magic - Celes (FF6)
Everything I just said about Terra.

Float - Farris (FF5)
The last spot goes to one of the versatile characters of the series. I imagine primarily a ninja/thief type role, in fact I was almost going to give it away to a more specialized character. Not only can she fill any holes the party needs she also is one of those characters who seems to do stuff like remember to bring a rope.
