View Full Version : [XIII-2] Famitsu Gives FFXIII-2 a perfect 40/40 score

"The setting and presentation is fantastic," wrote assistant editor Norihiro Fujiwara, "and the issues people brought up with the first game -- its linearity, its lack of meaty gameplay -- are a thing of the past. You're sucked into the game right from the beginning, and the story's very easy to get into."
"I have to take my hat off to the staff for being so open and thorough with responding to the feedback they got from FFXIII," added reviewer Ranbu Yoshida. "It feels like a very different game from its predecessor; the story changes depending on where you choose to go in your time-traveling journey, and it's easy to lose yourself in changing and redoing areas you've previously finished."

Good review. I am looking forward to playing the rest of this game.

It's unfortunate that they didn't address any of my major concerns with the game, which to be fair don't seem to be in line with the majority of complaints to begin with.
I don't have any doubt that I will eventually be buying it, but the jury is still out on whether it is a release day or price reduction title.

I'm waiting for the "famitsu was bought/biased!". http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Elpizo/Smileys/bounce1a.gif

I'm really, really glad this game is getting some early acclaim. It sounds like they accomplished the mission of making a great Final Fantasy. We'll see how it plays out when the fan feedback starts coming through, but I think I'm gonna hold off until the price plummets and I have nothing on my plate.

I think the bought/biased part is just implied for all game journalism.

I guess I'll be the "party pooper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMOzvxQHywM)". ;)
Well first off, Famitsu gave the original XIII a glowing review and a 39/40. Also, Famitus hasn't been the same pinnacle of critique they were in the old days. I mean of the 18 perfect scores they've given, 14 of them have been in the last six years, and hell one of the games is Nintendogs, If this was a decade ago, this would have been impressive. Now if this game gets a glowing review from Edge magazine who pretty much hate Squenix and gave FFXIII a well deserved 5/10, then we've got something going on here.
On a more serious note, I'm not surprised this game is getting good reviews, since they actually added real gameplay into it. I actually bet the game is going to play much better than the original, so I'm expecting near perfect scores from most gaming journalist. Course most of the FF titles get glowing reviews and high scores...

You beat me to it. If the original review is anything to go by, should we really be getting hyped for the sake of 1 measly extra point?

I... damn... they did give FFXIII 39/40. Crap. Well, I... I guess...

Simply means the 4 reviewers liked the game. Newsflash: there's more than 4 people out there in the world that would give XIII a 39/40. :p All a matter of opinion.

Yes, I was under the impression that there is a lot of behind-the-scenes action when it comes to the rating system of Famitsu. There is a lot of truth in what Wolf Kanno is saying.
I rarely read into reviews when making a decision about a game. My thoughts on whether or not I purchase a game are based on the opinions of its community or my thoughts on the game's predecessor or development team.
I will probably buy this game, but I'm not expecting anything past what I expected for Final Fantasy XIII.

Okay, I really like this game and agree with what the review says entirely... but even I would not give it a perfect score. Perfect? Really? What is this, the American education system?
The only thing I didn't like about the game during the first three hours of play was the over-simplification of the Crystarium, but that's something.

Famitsu or Edge or whatever, I don't generally care. Gaming journalism is massively flawed for a lot of reasons, really. The only review I'll ever care about is my own! Well, I'll still take note if a lot of people start to say something is good, though. I like using Metacritic's User Score. Sort of like going by IMDb ratings ahead of movie critics. Opinions of the masses are way better than the opinion of a critic.

I don't trust any sort of video game reviews now a days. Most of them are very biased and the vast majority of them don't even know 5-0 exist on the board, only 6-10. Not to mention, quite a few of them feel pressured to give a good score out of fear that the overreacting community will bash them. So... I'm just going to ignore that review.
I'm now convinced it's going to be awesome.
But then, I loved the original FFXIII.
This review just makes me more excited. :kakapo:

I don't put a lot of stock into reviews either, my process is similar to Roogle, but gameplay videos and reading up on the mechanics can sometimes intrigue me enough (Valkyria Chronicles was that way).
In this instance, I can wait to give FFXIII-2 a shot; I never gave X-2 the time of day and I think it's highly likely I'm taking that route this time. But I'm especially interested in seeing what a lot of you guys have to say about it.

I'm with everyone else, I don't rely on reviews or game journalism for whether or not I'm going to play a game. I'll go watch promotional videos, let's play videos, etc. for whether I'll be interested or not. I'm not really the type that's fussed with getting a game the first day it comes out, so I don't mind waiting to see a let's play on YouTube.
So far from what I've read and seen, it does look like a nice game.

I agree with Wolf Kanno. I'm not going to get excited just yet over a Famitsu review. I hope however that this game does turn out to show us it deserves the praise it's getting. My major concerns with XIII was it's linearity (obviously), lack of meaningful gameplay, & that there was no interactation with the outside world. Apartently they are trying to tackle these problems & listening to the feedback they have been getting. If XIII-2 can address these issues I'll be over the moon & will buy it on release. If not, I'll have to go back to playing the waiting game.
