Doesn't surprise me, they're all good games. I wish Chrono Cross would jump on to the Australian store.

Really awesome, I hope this sends a message to Square to release more although they've done a pretty commendable job already. I wonder if all those people who bought CT and this month's FFVI feel jipped though with the load times :(

There's probably no way to know, but I'm really curious if the purchases are being made by old-timey Squaresoft fans or newer gamers curious about these PS1 classics.

Also, I feel compelled to buy these even though I actually own a lot of them on disc. :kakapo:

Hey Square, how about you do a BRAND NEW GAME that's similar to these? Clearly people still like this stuff.

Surprised me because I thought we were in the minority in terms of taste in video games.

But I think we are in the majority of the market that is interested in 10+ year old games.

More like this is just showing that people are desperate for a good RPG fix, and most of those games can do it. ;)

I really need to jump back into some PS1 classic RPGs. I played a lot of them but also missed a lot because there were so many. Next year looks to be pretty barren for me in terms of new releases, so maybe I'll start jumping back in soon-ish.

Tarshish
12-13-2011, 12:29 PM
Yeah there were so many. I posted months ago asking what the best newer rpgs were, since I hadn't played rpgs in years, just assuming that the trend of awesome rpgs had,of course, continued. Imagine my disappointment. It's a little sad. Oh well. I just wish there were some boutique developer making games like they used to. Unfortunately the video game industry really is a victim of its own success. Hopefully, this is just a trend. Trends come and go. Just imagine a game like FF6 (or 7 or 9) or Chrono Trigger, i.e. story, gameplay etc., but with a modern graphics engine. It could be such a beautiful thing. But for now there are still a host of old games I haven't played so I still have my PS3 to play old PS1 games. seems a little odd, but oh well.

Things are looking good for Square Enix for December 2011.
Top PSone Classics:
1) FINAL FANTASY VI – Part of Square-Enix’s ‘Winter of RPGs’, Final Fantasy VI jumped to the top of the charts in its December release.
2) FINAL FANTASY VII
3) CHRONO CROSS
4) FINAL FANTASY V
5) Crash Bandicoot

PS. To any Ciddies/Admins can you please take November edition out of the title of the thread. I'll just update this one thread with charts going forward.

No, they dont usually release Sales figures. These are provided by the PS Blog. Maybe Square Enix might release sales figure, other than that you can wait for the Financial report from SONY and take an estimated stab at it. Keep in mind, NPD doesn't track digital downloads.

There is something terribly wrong with a company that looks at this and doesn't decide to make games of a similar calibre.

Nobody hardly ever posts hard numbers for downloaded titles. Maybe because they really don't sell all that much on PSN? Although I do know Sony reported when FFVII on PSOne Classics sold over 100,000. That's all I can remember, though.

Just curious how much being #1 actually means. It's all well and good to be at the top, but if that only means moving 1000 copies a week I don't think it qualifies as a market force.

To be fair to SE (did I just write that?), it's not like it's easy to make games as good or as memorable as some of the Square classics. Everyone would be doing it and would have done it already. Player taste is different these days too. What flew back then might not necessarily fly now. It really just seems like SE struggle when putting together complete, quality games these days.

Depression Moon

I don't agree at all that player taste is different these days. There are plenty of people that like movies that were popular way before they were even born. Don't see why it can't be the same for games.

It isn't about taste, it is about know and how of crafting full spec 3D FF , I mean looking at their flagships of 3D FF games we have 2 MMOs(11/14), MMO single player(12), 2 critical reactions(13/13-2). Probably they don't know how to make full spec 3D FF within short dev cycle.

Oh there are most definitely people who like older game design today, me among them. I would play the absolute hell out of, like ShinGundin just said, a fully realized current-gen FF game. Though it came out like six years ago, Dragon Quest 8 was my own and a lot of other players' favourite PS2 game. If a company can translate everything that used to make their old games good into a current-gen game, without cutting corners, then they've done a good thing. Dark Souls, for instance, is a great game that takes after something like the NES Castlevanias. Not many people will criticize DS for feeling old, but FromSoftware did a magnificent job taking a design mentality from a long time ago and using modern tech to make something that is seamless to younger gamers and "the game I dreamed about being made when I was holding a two-button NES controller as a child" to older ones.

But that said, I also think a vast number of new gamers (let's say, 10-year-olds getting their first XBox or PS3) have become accustomed to "newer" style games. It's perfectly normal and fine, of course. Things that were good will still be good, but trends shift and suddenly a giant from a previous era is stumbling along trying to adapt and please the next generation of a demographic they used to have by the throat. SE more than likely know that they don't have the same talent on payroll as they used to, but they're doing what they can within the constraints of their situation.

YES that's what I loved so much about Dragon Quest VIII and Demon's Souls after it, it's an NES game fully rendered in modern graphics with absolutely no concern whatsoever about modern game design.

Also, you spelled favorite wrong.

I don't necessarily think there's no concern for modern design in those games - I just think they are perfect mixes of the concept of old games and the slick playability and incredible presentation of modern ones. But if you mean that the developers of both games avoided dummying their products with me-too mechanics to fit in with the market, then yeah I totally agree with you. DQVIII and the D-Soulses are just... amazing.

Also, you spelled favorite wrong.

No you. ;)

Back on topic: Imagine FFIV or V done up with the same treatment as DQVIII? It would be glorious. XII actually did a good job bringing back the old school sense of adventure for me, which is partially why it's one of my favourite games in the series. But I'd really like to see a light-hearted job-system game done up in HD with the NES/SNES aesthetic though.

Basically I'm asking for a FFV HD remake. Is that so wrong.

FF12 was more of "dungeon crawler" than being an adventure game, or did we forget randomize treasures, loot, lack of Gil drops, the feel of walking through endless dungeons?

I'm amazed that FFVII still sells like this. I mean, die-hards likely already have the game and all of the merch, so who is still buying it? Must be word of mouth still. I wonder what all the new players think of it.

FYI, I don't myself have it, but if I pick up a PSP one of these days my first order of business will be to grab V-IX and Tactics off the store.

Yes, but it is only competing against other PS1 classics. I wouldn't be surprised if #1 spot was only like 100 copies.

I have no doubt in my mind that FF7 sold very well on PSN when it was released. But as Flying Arrow pointed out, it is hard to imagine it has a large market of people nowadays that haven't purchased it yet.

We have no way of knowing if being on the top of PSOne Classics means anything. The fact that FF7 is continually at the top, even in the face of much more recent re-releases, is what leads me to think this.

These are not download numbers. There are in fact "SALES", as in people purchasing them. If you look at the first post, you can see FFVII gets dethroned in both October and November (coinciding with the release of Crono Cross and Final Fantasy VI respectively), but it reclaims the top spot shortly after. Reason? Because it's hands down the best PSone title out there and new PSP/PS3/PSV players continue to show their support with eager demand for this gem.

There are plenty of gamers who have never even played FFVII before. There's another gaming generation now that's grown up without it, whose first foray into Final Fantasy was XII or XIII. The game has sold magnificently, but it has not come close to being bought by everyone in the gaming community. There are still people buying it, and there will continue to be people buying it as long as we can keep it alive and keep passing the word of it on to others.

Now if only Square will get it through their heads to release Secret of Mana on something besides the IPhone.

I just got this for my iPhone, it's great and all... But wouldn't it be so nice if they could do hand drawn (like in Legend of Mana) for PSN / Live and in HD? That'd make me wet myself, for sure. In fact, do it for Seiken Densetsu 3 too and give us an official translation! #onecandream

Thinking on it, PSN and Live would be a great place for SE to utilize a new dev department. It would concentrate on making quality pre-rendered/hand-drawn 2D RPGs and could service the same old-school gamer crowd that buys Mega Man 10 or an HD re-scale of a popular series. This department could be called... "Squaresoft".

Uh, yeah, occasionally. At one point, several of the games were free for playstation+ members. (Each Tuesday they add a new game that's free to download for ps+, square's had a few of those games). In fact, FFT:WotL is free right now for vita.

Aside from ps+, there are still occasional deals. Early 2012 during the "spring fever" thing, all the FFs were half off for ps+ users, and 30% off for everyone else. I bought several of them at that time even though I have multiple copies already. I'm a sucker, but a deal's a deal!

There's a big difference between being the developer of a game and the publisher of a game which is what Shoeberto was getting at.

Loony BoB

Eidos Montreal is still part of SE Europe. Don't take the "Europe" part literally.

Eidos Montreal is a Canadian video game development studio owned by Square Enix Europe, a subsidiary of Square Enix.

So, very different from Quantum Conundrum, which was developed by Airtight Games, which are independent of Square Enix.

Aulayna
04-11-2013, 09:41 AM
Yup, so to make sure I've understood you - what you're saying is that you consider Tomb Raider and DXHR to be Square Enix's games because they own the companies who made them - despite not actually developing those games themselves directly - whereas Quantum Conundrum isn't where they don't own the developer who made it?

Loony BoB
04-11-2013, 10:50 AM
Exactly that. Like it or not, Tomb Raider games and Deus Ex games are now Square Enix games just as much as Pokémon games are Nintendo games.

Shoeberto
04-11-2013, 02:29 PM
Eh. I nitpick because I think it's important to distinguish between the developer and the publisher. I don't really know what SE calls their own in-house dev studio anymore (the people who make the FFs, Kingdom Hearts, whatever), but obviously it's not the same teams that made Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. Maybe it's me being finicky.

Loony BoB
04-11-2013, 02:31 PM
They just number the Japan-based dev studios. FFXIV was developed by Square Enix Product Development Division 3, for example.

Click this to see which team 'owns' what. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_Enix#Production_teams)

EDIT: For what it's worth, I still consider Tomb Raider a Crystal Dynamics game, too. Likewise DE:HR a Eidos game. I just also see them as Square Enix games... I don't see it as mutually exclusive.

nirojan
04-11-2013, 09:16 PM
Who do I have to kill to get you people to understand my point of view?
(that was a joke)

SE opened a new studio in Montreal called "Square Enix Montreal". They're developing a next-gen Hitman game as well as aiding Eidos Montreal with some future projects. The team is made up of plenty of Eidos development staff. Would that studio count as a "Square Enix developer" in your eyes?

Because that's pretty much what the Japan-based developers are. They're studio that have SE in their names with a Production team # attached to it. Tommarrow if SE felt like changing the name of one of their western studios to have Square Enix in it, they can. You know why? BECAUSE THEY OWN THEM.

Just how the gaming community bitches to EA when Biware or DICE do something they don't like, the same treatment is sent towards Square Enix when of their Eidos studios messes up (Dues Ex:HR bosses come to mind). Hope that cleared thing up for ya!

Aulayna
04-12-2013, 12:09 AM
I fully understand you but I just do not think it's the best way to look at them as a development and publishing powerhouse.

The product development divisions at Square Enix are in-house as part of the parent company Square Enix Holdings Co. For all intents and purposes they are Square Enix. When a Final Fantasy main instalment is released it comes directly from them which is when people attribute Square Enix as the developer because for all intents and purposes it is a first-party title.

Eidos, Square Enix Europe etc are all subsidiaries and for the large part can probably operate quite autominously of the Holding Company barring any budgets/major projects that need signing off on etc. Eidos Montreal inparticular is a subsidiary of a subsidiary of the Holding Co.

Eidos Montreal developed Deus Ex whilst the parent company of it's parent company took on the publishing role of the game. This is why the Eidos Montreal brand name is on the game to show that it was developed by that studio and to identify it as a product of Eidos Montreal. The Holding Co. (which is what the Square Enix brand name is best known for) had to little to no involvement hence why it is not referred to as the publisher.

The term developer is used to refer directly to the studio that had the most involvement in the development process in the case it is not done in house by the holding company itself. These studios very often have their own PR, back office etc departments and for the most parts are independently operating business units within the organisation.

As I said before there is a very big difference between "developer" and "publisher" and context is everything. In the case of Deus Ex it was developed by Square Enix's studio Eidos Montreal not directly by Square Enix Holdings Co. which published it. Ergo Eidos Montreal is classed as the developer and Square Enix as the publisher.

For the most part being the publisher is a financial investment that's expecting a RoI.

Tommarrow if SE felt like changing the name of one of their western studios to have Square Enix in it, they can. You know why? BECAUSE THEY OWN THEM.

Not really considering Eidos Montreal is a subsidiary of a subsidiary so there is an entire beauraucratic chain of command such a re-branding would have to get signed off on first let alone barring major shareholder approval. Theoretically they indeed could do this. If they did then the games developed by that newly re-branded studio would still be considered games developed by that newly re-branded studio.

Of course you can argue that as Square Enix Holdings Co. own Square Enix Europe who own Eidos Montreal that Deus Ex was developed by Square Enix but that is a rather reductive point of view and does not properly credit the studio who is directly responsible for the game nor the colossal amount of business involved in making it and the phrase developed by Square Enix would generally refer to stuff made by the Product Development Divisions to avoid consumer confusion.

For example if you apply to work for Eidos Montreal you are applying to work directly for them on their payroll which is based according to investment and market performance of that studio, you are contracted directly to them - not SE Holdings Co. - and are the responsibility of Eidos Montreal's HR and business operations teams. Now of course in the unlikely event that whilst you're working at Eidos Montreal you gleam of information of a secret project that Product Development Division 1 is working on and then go and tell the internet - the Holdings Co. has every feasible grounds to start an internal audit to get you ass kicked out the door.

Just how the gaming community bitches to EA when Biware or DICE do something they don't like, the same treatment is sent towards Square Enix when of their Eidos studios messes up (Dues Ex:HR bosses come to mind).

Not entirely accurate. EA gets a lot of flack for it's rather aggressive absorbtion of studios in the early 2000s where when acting in the publisher role the destroyed the IPs of the studios they absorbed by becomming too controlling in the development process. So when EA acquires a new studio and the next product from that studios IP isn't up the par the gaming community has a rather self-perpetuating ideology that the smurf-up was because of EA, not because of the studio - regardless of whether or not that was the case. No-one goes around saying that EA developed Mass Effect or Dragon Age for example because it was BioWare and BioWare were the ones who were getting pretty thoroughly blasted by the community for DA2 and the ME3 endings. It's not like people phoned up DICE going "oh you're part of EA so you're responsible for how bad ME3 was /rage" - see hence the whole context between "developer" and "publisher."

Likewise Eidos Montreal directly got the brunt of criticism through their own social channels for the faults in DXHR and then in turn it was Eidos Montreal's PR guy who gave us the look at DXHR Director's Cut because they are the ones developing it.

Context is everything - the industry is pretty smart at differentiating between the two. Infact the term second-party developers is used specifically for this.

Out of breath yet from all the back and forth? Well...

EDIT: For what it's worth, I still consider Tomb Raider a Crystal Dynamics game, too. Likewise DE:HR a Eidos game. I just also see them as Square Enix games... I don't see it as mutually exclusive.

TLDR Version: This^

But Square Enix's games are doing well so hurrah!

Okay, one last Question:

SE opened a new studio in Montreal called "Square Enix Montreal". They're developing a next-gen Hitman game as well as aiding Eidos Montreal with some future projects. The team is made up of plenty of Eidos development staff. Would that studio count as a "Square Enix developer" in your eyes?

Bolivar

I consider DICE to be an EA studio whereas Crytek is not, although both studio's games come out with EA on the label.

I just see all these teams as Square Enix now, *shrugs*

To be fair, DICE is owned by EA and Crytek is independently owned and contracted by them for the Crysis series. Crytek owns the IP, whereas everything DICE makes is owned by EA.

Sounds like Phil Rogers (Eidos) is soon to become a director of SE Holdings, so I'd say SE is getting a bit more 'merged' with Eidos than it might have been in the past.

I think SE is still in a bit of a transition state with Eidos and some of the properties. SE owns the rights to the franchises and can give them to other studios to develop just as Nintendo gave Donkey Kong to Rare and Metroid to Retro Studios or *shudder* Team Ninja. That is where I think SE is with all of the stuff they have acquired. This purchased properties are more like Pseudo SE and Pseudo dev house.

It is one of those tricky sort of things but I think in a year after whatever restructuring goes on some of this Published vs Developed will become a bit clearer.

They can't because of some copyright law on the credits song, and they are too lazy to change the song.

A couple changes happened over at the PS Blog. The "classics" and "PSP" categories have been slashed to just 5 titles (down from 10). There was a big Holiday PSN sale which included FFXIV & TR, which led to them resurfacing last month. GTA: San Andreas (PS2) and Metal Gear Solid (PSone) continue to outsell FFVII on the classics front.

Thief's debut and FFX|X-2 had a strong showing. First time SE has appeared on the Vita! Unfortunately, there was a big Grand Theft Auto Sale that pushed all Square Enix titles off of the PSOne/PS2 classics and Digital PSP lists. First time Square's been absent from the "Classics" list.

Okay guys I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Certain Activision (and by extension Blizzard) games get published by Square Enix in Japan. In those regions, those games are considered Square Enix's games. Should I include them in the lists?

So..I've decided to add Latin America & Brazil! The LATAM countries are listed out individually and their list goes up the same day as the US & EU lists. No Square Enix titles clocked on Brazil's list this month. The LATAM countries are Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Columbia & Peru. I'll list them after the EU lists from now on.

Probably not, since there isn't a single person who would mistake Diablo for a Square game over a Blizzard game lol.

Yeah that's true. But alot of people in Japan associate Call of Duty with Square Enix. A few years ago there was an uproar that the Square wasn't including the English voice track in the Japanese release (for Black ops 2 I think). SE now releases both language versions.

I won't include Acti/Blizz games in the future.

Well that's a little unfair...some of the newer eidos titles clocked ;P

But yeah square really needs to pull a rabbit out of their hat with FFXV (and probably FFXVI), I can see them losing alot of their fan's trust if they pull more XIII shenanigans.
