I've just wrapped up Outland and I have to say it is without a doubt the best game I have played all year. Not bad for $9.99. Having finished this I am now hankering for another 2D platformer to sink my teeth into.

What relatively modern (last 5 years) platformers have you guys enjoyed?

Yeah I've got nothin'. Any of the "modern" 2D adventure games I've enjoyed recently don't really fall into the platformer category.

SNES and Genesis games are all good, but I think I have probably exhausted most of the ones I like by now.

Donkey Kong Country Returns. Maybe the best Wii game I've played.

Were the New Super Mario Bros. games within the last 5 years? If so, those too. Nintendo knows their stuff when it comes to this genre.

I enjoyed Outland too.

If you're looking on PSN, you might want to try Trine. The platforming can be a little floaty, but the game has a whole lot going for it. Try the demo if you're unsure. Have you played LittleBigPlanet?

The jumping in LittleBigPlanet was way too floaty for my tastes, which is a damn shame because from what I understand it is kind of the ultimate modern day take on the platformer. I like really tight controls/physics, even going back to play Super Mario World a little while ago I was depressed to find how much the inertia in that game irritated me. I like me some zero inertia Mega Man style physics!

I will give Trine a look, I saw it pop up a few times when I was browsing. For now I am occupied with Castelvania: Portrait of Ruin. I don't know how this game was able to escape my knowledge until now, I love all the SotN style Castlevania titles.

I had a blast with Hard Corps: Uprising, but I was also playing it with one of my best friends blasting our favorite tunes, so it was more of a social thing than the actual game itself. Great fun if you can get a friend to play.

Why are you not playing RAYMAN ORIGINS right now! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1gpyeh6kOc)

I'm dead serious, go get it right now. It's probably the best 2D Platformer to come out in an extremely long time.

Let's see, there's the Subspace Emissary from SSBB, The Legendary Starfy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Castle Crushers (if that counts as a 2D platformer), Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I'm hoping to add Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Rayman Origins on that list after Christmas.

2D Sidescrolling platformers are my favourite game genre. Lots of action yet simple to learn and get into.
