There is a flurry of films coming out over the next week or so but may as well set this up now. What are your favourite films from 2011? As release dates differing between countries tends to muddy the waters for these threads, to make it easier, any film that came out in the country you live in 2011 counts.

So, choices? I'd say:

Black Swan
Blue Valentine
A Separation
Senna
Super 8

Honourable mentions: The Skin I Live In, The King's Speech

Black Swan came in 2011? Seems longer ago! huh!

According to IMDb Black Swan came out in 2010. EDIT: Actually for the UK it came out in 2011 so yay, it counts!

I'm not sure yet of my favs, as I haven't seen many from this year, but the below are gems.

Melancholia
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Thor
Black Swan

Also, I'm looking forward to the American version of The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo.

This year was rare in that I actually didn't see any movies except for The Tree of Life, which I liked a lot.

I actually didn't like Black Swan. Very uncomfortable watching it and at the end I didn't feel happy with the ending.

Mine:
Super 8
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
X Men: First Class

Err, can't think of any more.

You know, looking back, this wasn't a very good year for movies.

I don't think I have a favorite, but I enjoyed:

Thor
X-Men First Class
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows
Midnight In Paris
The Help

I haven't watched a lot of the Oscar-y movies yet, so maybe that'll change my opinion of this year's movie crop.

Good point. I'm going to say HP7 as well and give up.

Add Sherlock Holmes 2 to that list for me. As well as 50/50. How could you forget that one! I know you liked it!

EDIT: Captain America was ok too I guess. Not as good as Thor or X-Men though.

Adding 50/50 and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to my list of favs for this year. And maybe even Hanna. Hanna wasn't really a great movie, but for some reason it just sorta sticks with you. I thought about that movie for days after watching it.

I agree entirely. I really don't understand why everyone raved about it (apart from that scene with Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman). It was extremely uncomfortable viewing and Natalie Portman's performance (while her dancing was excellent) was ridiculously over-rated.

I'm going to go with...

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Super 8
Arrietty (UK)
X-Men: First Class
Moneyball

The Harry Potter series has been consistently excellent but the last installment was a big let-down for me.

Oh I forgot about Moneyball!

Surprised that no one has mentioned Drive. By far the coolest crime thriller I've seen in a while. Like a mix between Mulholland Drive, Heat and Pulp Fiction. Albert Brooks was great in the film, hope he takes on these darker roles in the future. Great soundtrack too.

Trollhunter also gets an honorable mention.

Not counting Black Swan. :p

Sherlock Holmes 2
X-Men First Class
Rise of the Planet of the Apes

And... that's about it. Thor and Captain America were both very underwhelming.
