This week's Famitsu had an interview with Toriyama:
-XIII-2's development progressed more according to plan than XIII.
-Toriyama is happy that the gameplay systems are being well received.
-The game originally had a system where you could strengthen your accessories, but this made your character too strong, so they got rid of it.
-As detailed earlier, the game will see series bosses for coliseum mode outside of the Omega download that kicked off DLC.
-Lightning will appear in the game as a coliseum opponent download. Defeat her, and you can make her into a party member. Her role is blaster.
-They hope to continue releasing download content through May.
-The DLC will include things outside of the coliseum battles -- episodes, for instance.
-Outside of download content, the game will have updates which will add new support functionality for those digging deep into the game.
-Toriyama said that they'd like to use Sazh, his son Dajh and interdimensional traveling merchant Chocholina in some capacity, either through novels or DLC.

"Lightning's DLC goes beyond just the character data. Square Enix also plans on releasing secret story episodes for the character.

Outside of Lightning, FF fans can look forward to classic Final Fantasy series bosses for the coliseum battle mode.

These revelations come from what appears to be a general interview with reps from Square Enix's 1st Production Department (I'm not sure who the reps are, but XIII-2 interviews are usually with Motomu Toriyama and Yoshinori Kitase). The interview also reveals that Square Enix is hoping to expand the XIII-2 story outside of just DLC, with novels and so-forth. They hope to include Sazh and his son and the Chocolina character in DLC or novels. Noting that the Japanese market is changing greatly, they say that they'd like to consider a variety of things for future developments.

There's one bit about Final Fantasy X HD in the interview. The staff says that it will be a bit longer before we get screenshots. However, they hope to not take too long in releasing the game."

*cough*bullsh--*caugh*

All that means is that the balanced it poorly and didn't think it was worth it to go back and fix it.

one of my favorite things about 13 was that you didn't need to wait for anything to download. it was just DONE in the box it came in.

i'm not sure if i'll care about dlc anyway, because by the time i pick this up all the dlc should be free anyway, right? (ps years from now)

I thought the best part of FFXIII was Lightening, I was really disappointed when I found out that in XIII-2 it will be Sera & Noel. It is the biggest drawback to the game that I have seen in the previews, Sera is not believable as a fighter.

For Light to be relegated to ravager and in a monster slot is still disappointing. Army of no-One now?

Okay this looks more and more like Final Fantsy X-2...
Defeat Lightning in the coliseum to make her a party member? They did the same thing with Tidus, Auron, Seymour Shinra in X-2 International, as well as the whole idea of putting monsters in your party instead of having your party get more human members through storyline. Also, the whole "explore all the timelines" instead of following a set path throughout the story reminds me of X-2 as well. Besides, they're going to release "episodes"? The only thing missing now is being able to feed your monsters items and accessoires to strengthen them.

I finally made up my mind and pre-ordered...i feel dirty now :(

After reading up on the dlc content I'm ashamed of Square Enix ripping customers off like that, charging full price for the game then offering dlc micro-transactions to get content such as accessories that raise gill, item, and cp drop rate from the monsters!!! come on!!!! that stuff should have came with the game just like the previous final fantasy games. I'm gonna wait and play it myself once it gets here. If i don't feel i got my moneys worth WITHOUT having to pay for dlc then I'm gonna be thoroughly pissed!!

So far i am feeling deep regret.. I should have just waited another year to purchase this game lol. Can't change the past now i just hope it's worth it....

I think they really screwed themselves over with the "new characters are monsters" model for DLC characters they're going for. I mean, if you introduce a past FF villain, or a character from another game, what role are you going to give them? Do you realize just how few characters and especially bosses in gaming center around buffing, debuffing, tanking, or healing? Sure, you can find a few, but the vast majority are going to be damage-based. The most memorable things about most characters are the big flashy damage animations, if nothing else. Most abilities and attacks focus around damage, and have for most of the series. So is every new character going to be stuck being either a Ravager or a Commando?

Elskidor

So newer games now make weaker games with little content for the same price, and charge you extra for what should have been in the original box copy? That's a brilliant idea! They screw up the franchise and we pay them more to help rebuild it. Not interested.

They won't. Seen it happen too much in mmos. They'll just start catering to the spenders and the core fans become more and more disconnected with the franchise. They replace the old fans that helped them create a name for themselves with newer folk with deeper pockets or just don't care to follow the new trend.

Edit: Yeah yeah double post. Merge them. I forget the weird rules around these har parts.

Wow just got my ass handed to me by amodar. Read through some faqs and people who have double my stats lost so it's not that bad. Guess I should get further down in the story before reattempting.

Btw, did anyone buy Noel's costume? Are there any status buffs or anything like that? Cause I'm not paying the same price for the coliseum just so he can have some ugly red suit.

I agree completely that we are being ripped off. They released an incomplete game with an inconclusive ending and now expect us to pay for DLC for a POTENTIAL resolution, as they have not even confirmed whether the DLC will wrap up the story. I feel pretty jipped having paid full price for the game, especially since it was only 30 hours of gameplay for the main story. That is very short for a FF game. The game itself was great and fun to play, but without a satisfying ending and only 30 hours of core gameplay, it really feels like a jip for the price. I'm pretty angry about the precedent Square is trying to set here. If all games made you pay to see the ending I'd quit gaming altogether, or just play mindless plotless games like most of the Western market already does. >__>

Well I would agree with you that we would be ripped off if the game was considered weak or bad, but I found myself loving the game and for that reason I bought the DLC (both Serah's new weapon and the Lightning+Amodar battle) I have to say I love having Light in my party, I have yet to beef her up with passives yet but I am fairly sure its safe to say she is going to be more powerful then Twilight Odin, the alleged strongest recruit in the game she and Amodar have a max level of 13 and both come with a 6 slot ATB timer and Lights limit (as you may have guessed) is her One Man Army.

At the end of the day, companies do shit like this all the time, "spend this much to access new maps ect" which is exactly the same as "spend this much to access new monsters story and other cool stuff" the price for the DLC is 400ms points which is a tiny amount, and you get some cool stuff out of it... why should Square Enix be damned for wanting to make more money on a game that is already half decent? if (prays to god) a FFVII remake should ever happen, do you think SE would like the idea of putting DLC in that? I'm sure they will, and I'm also damned sure alot of fans would welcome something that would let them play the game a little longer, I'm not saying XIII-2 is as good as VII (heaven forfend) but in my opinion its still a great game that vastly makes up for the blunder that XIII was.

Oh and ftr, Light+Sunglasses = awesomeness.

The Lightning + Amodar battles are fine. That's clearly an extra thing that wouldn't be a part of a complete game. My beef is more with DLC relating to weapons, accessories, extra scenarios that make the story make sense, etc.

I'm actually considering buying the Lightning DLC because it's only 3 bucks and it would be awesome to get her in my party.

What level would you recommend before I attempt to take on Lightning and Amodar in the Colliseum? Total combined role levels, or point in the storyline, either would work.

Carl the Llama
02-12-2012, 07:18 AM
Well I can't really help you out there, I was already maxed out on the Crystarium before the DLC became available to me, so I just wipped the floor with them, I had to do the fight 5 times before I even saw Lights crystal even with the Monster Collector Fragment skill active (which you can get by gathering all the fragments in Vile Peaks (which is quite difficult if your not that strong)) I would say you need about 3-3.5k health each on Noel and Serah with about 300 in mag and str on them to go into the fight with the boss... cant really say more its a spoiler, but the strongest monster crystal in the game can be obtained from there, its worth doing just for that, I would recommend going around about chapter 6 (final chapter) to do these optional side quests.

Of course you could always go and try fighting her now, bear in mind once either Light or Amodar get taken down the other gets a huge buff at which point they will do their limit... for Light its Army of One, it dealt me, completely maxed out 200+ damage per hit, think there were about 8 hits so... 1600, which may not seem like much but when your fully buffed and completely maxed out, the last thing you expect is for 1/4 of your health bar to disappear.

Oh and if your wondering what Max stats are:

Serah:
HP: 7057
STR: 518
MAG: 626

Noel:
HP: 8988
STR: 667
MAG: 555

This is of course subject to change depending on what class you used to use on the big nodes (as they offer different bonus stats per class), I really wasn't that fussed I just maxed everything out first by abilities (got all the abilities for all the classes) then went on to max out every class from top to bottom.

According to the Arbiter, it is not actually Lightning, rather a shadow of her. Not truly her, merely a reflection of her power.

Although both her and Amodar talk as though they are real entities. Hmm...

Well, Chapter 2 is too early to do it, it seems. With three maxed layers of the Crystarium, I was able to get Lightning down low enough to bring Amodar into the fight, and he royally creamed me. :P

Realistically you need to be near the end of chapter 3. Getting a bunker beast sent. and leveling it up can really help (it gets that ability where AoE attacks hurt the others less.

NEW DLC ANNOUNCED!

35621

Late February content coming in: Serah's getting a new Swimsuit called "Resort Style" and Noel's getting a suit entitled "Jikuu no Shugosha" (maybe... "Protector of Time and Space"), a black colored suit that is given to time traveling warriors from Etro.

Sazh content confirmed for Feb 28, 2012.

Sazh's DLC is called "Omote ka Ura ka" (maybe... "Front or Back") and involves Sazh somehow ending up in Xanadu, where he decides to try out two new table games.

Those two games are also part of the DLC One is called Chrono Bind and is played on a table that has a clock face on its top.

This entitlement attitude towards DLC pisses me off to no end, because it discourages developers from developing any quality DLC. They have to put in alot of time to program the new content, whether its just a simple new costume for Noel and Serah, or entirely new areas to explore. Square Enix has to pay their programmers to make these new things. And if they can't make back the money to pay their programmers, why make it in the first place? After all, those programmers could be put to work making new games they could make money off of.

They're not ripping us off, they're making a return on their investment. If you don't want to pay for it, that's your call on how to spend your own hard earned money. Me, I have no problem spending a little extra to expand a game I like.

I'd rather wait a few months and they just package all the DLC in with the original release of the game. My main gripe is with companies purposely leaving content out that will be reserved for DLC. Imagine having to download the FFVIII card game, or FFX's blitzball or monster arena. Or even FFVI's Umaro and Gogo! Those are entirely plausible scenarios under the current structure and it's leading down an awful path.

I'm totally in favor of DLC that is clearly supplemental content to the actual game and required extra development. Mass Effect 2's The Arrival is a good example, since that came later and is meant to bridge to the third game. But downloading individual monster battles, items, a card game, and scenes involving one of the main characters of FFXIII on a game you already paid $70 for? That's just SE nickel and diming us and it's unacceptable.

Given that a larger and larger percentage of the gaming market seems to be focusing on mindless shooters and other similar horrible genres, I'm perfectly happy with this setup.

It keeps the game availible and accessible to people with a low income, while allowing developers who still want to make good, high quality RPGs an additional revenue source to keep the money flowing and therefore keep up the development of good games.

The economy is not great right now. SE itself isn't in wonderful shape. And the gaming market looks bleak (in terms of what I look for in games). I am perfectly happy to pay double the price of a standard game on the market to get everything I can out of a good RPG, and to keep more good RPGs coming in the future. Anything to stave off having Gamestop shelves filled with nothing but Halo 23 and Madden '27, and nothing else.

And if you don't like the setup, don't buy the DLC. Lightning is not needed to finish and enjoy the game. Nor is Amodar, or Gilgamesh, or the outfits.

How does releasing a game that costs $70 retail (on the high end for games today), and then asks you to pay even more for each little piece of extra content accessible to people with low income? I'd have no problem if the initial price of the game was lower and then have extra content as DLC. But FFXIII-2 was pretty expensive off the shelf as far as today's games go.

SE's financial troubles are none of our concern and are not an excuse for them to nickel and dime their faithful customers. Part of their troubles are due to a loss of reputation for being the go-to company for quality RPGs. I don't see how releasing games that purposefully leave content out for DLC can help repair that reputation.

Most of the current DLC isn't necessary to enjoy the game to its end (though neither is a lot of stuff included in older FFs), but what about the inevitable 'true ending' DLC? And the Sazh card game scenario is what got me going in the first place because I'm pretty sure that would have been included in the main game had it been released 5 years ago.

And yes, I understand I am free not to buy it and SE is just trying to make money here. That doesn't make me less disappointed.

FFXIII-2 was pretty expensive off the shelf as far as today's games go.
Was it? £40 is pretty much the standard price for a game over here when it's first released and FFXIII-2 was no different. Did they increase the cost in America?

Overall, I agree with the rest of your sentiments, although I can see both sides of the coin - I can understand that when every other major publisher and developer seems to be pushing out DLC for their games, it's a bit unfair to SE that they are suddenly told they can't because it's not cool to their customers. I don't make a habit of buying DLC, personally, but I do pay for the FFXIII-2 stuff purely because I'm heavily into FF stuff and like to see what's out there. I'm not sure I'd pay for many, if any, additional monster battles... but I will pay for other content, including storyline stuff.

I will, despite all that, be heavily disappointed if the 'true ending' is released via DLC. I don't think it will be, personally. I think that it will be released as FFXIII-3.

Overall, if FFXIII-2 was released sans all the DLC that is being thrown out now, and left alone... I'd still be happy with the game. It's a tricky call, but so long as the DLC is reasonably priced and will provide something I'm interested in, and so long as the DLC isn't 'removed' from the original game (particularly in the case of the main storyline) then I'm okay with it.

At release the normal edition was $70 on Amazon iirc. I see it's now $45, which is much better. For comparison, Mass Effect 3 is listed as $60, which I believe is the standard.

Ah, that sucks. All games seem to start off at £40 (or lower if you're lucky) over here, it's been some time since I've seen anything higher than that.

Unless it's Modern Warfare 3 or Skyrim which I frequently see retailing at £42+

It keeps the game availible and accessible to people with a low income, while allowing developers who still want to make good, high quality RPGs an additional revenue source to keep the money flowing and therefore keep up the development of good games.

Because the extra content is extra? You can buy the game for 70 bucks (thought it was 60, actually), and you don't need the extra. Really, what benefit do you get out of the Sazh segment or the colliseum battles? The game itself is complete.

As it is, if they were just to bundle it, they'd be charging you 150 for the game and all the extra content that went with it.

Um, yes, it is. They are a business. Their objective is to make money. They don't have any "obligation" to their "faithful customers" at all, short of the legal ones that they have to provide what people pay for.

If the games they make and sell aren't making money, then an alternative source of revenue is required.

If their business goes under, what good does being good to their faithful customers get them? None.

They made a game, you bought it. Their obligation is fulfilled.

And in my opinion, it is a good game, and I'm happy to invest more in it.

WHAT "true ending" DLC? I'm sorry, I haven't heard or seen anything about this, even in rumors. Please, linkies and elaborate, because that I don't agree with, depending on how it is handled (haven't finished the game yet, though, so hopefully no spoiler detail).

And yes, I understand I am free not to buy it and SE is just trying to make money here. That doesn't make me less disappointed.

Agreed. And you are fully entitled to that disappointment.

I don't think making money and being faithful to your fans are mutually exclusive. Having a good reputation entirely affects a company's bottom line. I never think SE is anything but a corporation out to make the most money possible. I just feel leaving elements out of their game purposefully to add later as DLC is not the way to go about repairing your reputation, therefore increasing revenue in the long run (though it may in the short run which may be all they care about). If it was made very clear that all the DLC was created post-production and were entirely separate from the main conceptualization of the game, then it would be fine. But the game takes you to the Coliseum only to let you know there's nothing there yet, and the same goes for Serendipity where NPCs repeatedly tell you parts of it are 'under construction' and will be available later (for a price of course). To me that's a clear statement of 'we made these other great things for the game but decided to leave them out in hopes of getting more money from you' and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Compare that with Mass Effect 2, where most of the DLC involved very separate, complete scenarios that were not interjected with the main game.

I agree that FFXIII-2 is a complete game. It was really fun and I enjoyed it. But FFX is also a complete game without Blitzball (as a mini-game) or the monster arena. Imagine going through FFX and at every save sphere gave you the 'Play Blitzball' option, only to have a message say 'Currently unavailable'. Then they release Blitzball for 10 bucks a month later. That would piss me off, unless the game cost less to begin with.

Without spoiling it, I will say the ending very clearly and conspicuously indicates that there is more to this story. There will either be a DLC that finishes it off, or a FFXIII-3, or some other media release. There is an interview with Kitase that goes over it but I can't find the link right now. The game itself is complete, but its conclusion certainly wasn't.

Next Lightning DLC is called "Requiem of the Goddess"

Lightning is coming back to Final Fantasy XIII-2. As reported a few weeks back, the FFXIII hero's second XIII-2 download content will be released in May and will show Lighthing and villain Caius in a different form of battle from what we saw in the main game.

Dengeki PlayStation reveals the episode's name to be "Requiem of the Goddess."

That's all we know at the moment, but an appearance in Dengeki or Famitsu usually means that Square Enix will make official announcement of the DLC (along with screenshots hopefully) later in the week.

Serah will now have at least four DLC outfits, but I'd like to see her fighting in her original XIII outfit. Or, if not that, then I'd like her to wear a pink tank top, blue jeans, and pink sneakers, or have her cosplay as Aya Brea, like Lightning did in Dissidia 012.

Noel's "AC Ezio" armour and Gilgamesh INCOMING!!!
35869

Gilgamesh will appear in Final Fantasy XIII-2's Coliseum Battle mode as part of the game's fifth download content. He won't be alone. Arriving simultaneously will be the alien-like enemy Koyo-Koyo.

Weekly Famitsu has details on both downloadable foes. Gilgamesh becomes an Attacker if you manage to make him into a party member. The chance of this is 25.15%. Koyo-Koyo will become a Healer, but he has just a 10% crystalization rate, so getting him may be tough.

Both monsters will arrive on April 10. Gilgamesh is priced ¥400/480MSP. Koyo-Koyo is ¥200/240MSP.

Noel's Assassin's Creed "Ezio" costume and Serha's Exposure and Defense costumes are also due out on the 10th. The Elzo costume is ¥300/360MSP. Exposure and Defense, a costume designed (and briefly worn) by an AKB48 member, will be free.
