View Full Version : MIA sticks middle finger up at camera during Super Bowl halftime show

SuperMillionaire

I didn't notice it last night, but further examination of the footage reveals that British female rapper MIA apparently stuck up her middle finger at the camera during her performance with Madonna (also featuring Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green, and LMFAO) at the Super Bowl halftime show last night. I thought it was a great show, but when I saw the footage upon closer examination, I was shocked and disgusted at it. Her actions were tasteless and classless, and I think that instead of fining NBC and the NFL for her actions, they should fine the artist herself to make these artists accountable for their actions, especially on live TV.

did you feel the same way when janet jackson lost her bra during the same event a few years back?

The blame during the Janet Jackson fiasco cannot be compared with the current outcry (which is dumb) over MIA's actions, as one was clearly intentional and the other one was not. The entire thing, both situations, are silly and fines by the FCC for something as dumb as this are nothing more than the FCC caving to pressure by "Family Groups" who think they actually stand for something.

Non-issue.

I know right.

As if a finger is any worse than any of the misogynistic commercials that were played during the superbowl. Please. This is a game where people pummel each other for millions of dollars. It's ain't all sunshine and daisies.

I wouldn't call her a "flavour of the moment". She's been pretty consistently popular for a few years now, although she's definitely on the way out IMO.

But yeah, total non-issue. The only real issue here is how over reactionary and oversensitive NBC/NFL/FCC seem to be over this, and its implications for whatever entertainment they end up picking for the next Superbowl.

Which is to say, there is no real issue.

Agent Proto

Bunny is correct that this is pretty much a non-issue. First of all, you did initially say that you haven't noticed it right away while watching. Most likely many people were just the same. The finger went by unnoticed by many, unlike the wardrobe malfunction Janet Jackson had. That was so noticeable, it was the most TiVo'd moment in TV history. True story bro.

If anything, I'm sure MIA may get fined for this. Anything else? Just leave it alone. Who cares.

Freya

OHHH so that's who that was. I had no idea who she was. Her actions were not important because I didn't know nor care who she was. heh

Why does anyone care? Did anyone actually watch the friggen half time show? Does the NFL only want 14 year olds watching their sporting events??? After watching the opening act for the Pro Bowl and the halftime show of the Super Bowl I'd say yes they are expecting the crowd to mainly be 14 year old girls.

She's not a rapper, and she's not a flavour of the moment, her debut record (still brilliant as well) came out almost seven years ago!

I used to like a little of her music, but I think it's funny that she was a kinda pro-revolution music figure, and here she is with Niki Minaj at the event which epitomizes American consumption in probably one of the most ridiculously extravagant half-time shows in its history. Throwing up a bird just seems... sad?

Eh, it happens Super. Non-issue in my viewpoint, if you're dead set on looking at it from a family values standpoint it's a far cry better than most of the the shit on television. I'd say pick your battles/thread topics and get over a rapper flipping the bird on live tv. :monster:

Taking a quick glance at that, I don't really notice the finger, and apparently many others haven't either. Read this (http://online.wsj.com/article/AP5ce9d7d8388e459c80d455e37098ec6d.html) and you'll see that several people didn't even notice the finger until NBC's apology. Though, I do think she should at least apologize for her action.

The concept of family values is based off an ideology that was an illusion to begin with.

If one lets a simple hand gesture turn their world upside down, then they have either lived too simple of a life, or are trying to look for ways to get offended to justify some sort of misguided crusade.

I'm of the popular opinion 'who gives a smurf stop going out of your way to be offended'.

She's an idiot, you're an idiot for claiming offence. It's not even worth a smurfing paragraph.

PS: A middle aged women dresses like a middle aged hooker and dry humps dancers and you're put out by a finger. Interesting

Lawl, it's her finger. I fail to see how that shocks and disgusts. Perhaps I'm desensitized, or perhaps I'm more shocked and disgusted by things like children being sodomized in the Catholic Church. It was tasteless I will give you that, but to revert back to the same argument I used when the Janet Jackson controversy arose: how is watching men bang into each other any better? Teaching violent behavior is far worse than teaching rude behavior. With that said, I didn't even watch the Superbowl, but I like MIA—even when it looks like she dresses in the dark.

Actually, I rather liked "Maya" a lot. I think it's an underrated album.

Anyway, M.I.A. is a smart lady. She most likely did it since she knew it would become this ridiculously big deal, and it's thus a comment on America's tendency of insane sensitivity to pretty much everything. That, and she got a whole lot of media coverage.

GoDaddy still has commercial slots. There was a car commercial this year that bordered on softcore porn. I cannot concieve of how this deserves apology over the commercials they allow to air. Seems pretty ridiculous to single this blurb out as offensive amidst all the rest of the madness. It's like slapping a kid five times, stealing his bike, fondling his mom, and then apologizing for calling his dog dumb.

Related note: If you invite MIA on your stage, you shoulda seen this coming.

Semi-related: I don't understand how on earth anyone can still claim that Janet Jackson's nip slip was an accident. It happened at the climax to the song, she was wearing a pasty (why? It wasn't like her outift was sheer or anything.) and the damned boob-panel pretty much came off like it was velcroed on. Probably most damning to me, she continued to stand there looking all serious-music-star-pose. I dunno about anyone else, but if I was on stage an someone ripped off a chunk of my pants and my junk flopped out, I'm fairly certain I would notice and react with a hearty "oh s---!"

Entertainment has never been wholesome or family oriented.

You think a rude gesture is bad? Look back through the 60's-90's and see just how many songs were about drugs and sex reaching the tops of the charts.

Look at all the 'childrens programing' that has some of the most perverted lines of dialogue.

Things like this happening have always been there norm. There is always outcrys of 'moral indecency that's destroying our country', and nothing has yet to happen.

SuperMillionaire
03-01-2012, 10:11 PM
No, entertainment has never been completely wholesome, but for some reason, it seems to be getting worse. It seems as though a lot of music and television stars seems to lack a sense of decency. Today, it seems that shock is the norm, rather than the exception; I'm aware that shock value has always been around, but it seems more common now than in the past.

On a side note, personally, I hate Jersey Shore and all of MTV's stupid (un-)reality shows.

Who doesn't hate Jersey Shore and the like? The moral of this thread, SuperMillionaire, is simple:
You are on the internet: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy so having morals over someone putting their finger up (in which isn't technically a swearing gesture to all. Us Brits use a alternative of 2 fingers in a V) is not gonna wash with the rest of the population. It's not news and it's no where near as shocking and abhorent as you have described
