March Gaming Competition - Sonic 2 and Brood War redux

Ok, sorry about the delay here. Shit kind of hit the fan in the last few weeks with me working long hours at work and my grandfather in the hospital, but let's get back to this shall we?

So last months Brood War attempt was a bit of a bust, but we did decide to move it to Saturday, March 24th at 6pm EST. Those of you for whom work may be an issue who want to participate, see about getting the night off if you can and you haven't already.

If you have any questions though, post them here.

We're also doing an extra competition this month since we didn't get one in last month. Those who want to can compete to get the farthest in Sonic 2 before seeing a game over screen. Use all the lives you want, but once you run out, your done. The winners will be decided the same way as in the Mario competition: whoever reaches the farthest level wins with ties decided based on score. Be sure to post screenshots as well or your attempt won't be counted, but also state the level you ended on since the game over screen doesn't specify which part of a level you're on when you die.

As an added bonus, the first person to become Super Sonic during any playthrough (not necessarily the one you submit for the main contest) will get 5 bonus points moving forward in the competition. So that means we have as many as 15 points up for grabs for any one person if someone happened to win all 3 challenges. But no one should feel obligated to attempt them all. Compete in whatever you can and be sure to have some fun.

I would have liked to have a Skype get together for Sonic 2, but my schedule is generally hectic this time of year, so anyone wanting to play through Sonic 2 with others will have to set it up on their own.

Finally, the Sonic 2 competition will end on March 30 with the winners and standings for the whole competition updated on March 31 or April 1 depending on when I have the time to get to it. After that, the competition will be taking a bit of a hiatus until May. April is usually the busiest time of year for me and I absolutely don't want to commit to having another competition thread that month when I know I probably won't have the time to devote to it.

Sonic 2 I can definitely do. Doubt I'll beat Casino Night Zone because that boss fight always destroys me but I'll give it a shot...

24th March is perfect for me for the Brood War extravaganza. I'll be there ready to lose my entire army in record time. I suck at this game.

I'll also get on it with Sonic 2. I can pretty much guarantee I won't get Super Sonic. I'm pretty sure I won't get to the end either (I was a Nintendo boy growing up) but I'll give it a damn good effort!

The bad news is, as I expected, I didn't get that night off from work because no one could cover me. :(

I got Super Sonic once. Maybe I can do it again. When we played this the last time though those special stages were a lot harder than I remember.

Not without cheating. I can do it in Sonic 3 without breaking a sweat. I will try the SATAM technique this time!

Also, the only way you can be any sort of Super Tails is in Sonic 3 with Sonic&Knuckles locked on. :(

EDIT: Also, Tails is the Scrappy Doo of video games.

Okay bitches, I figured I'd tackle these challenges seeing as stuff, so here we are.

It is possible to get him before the end of Green Hill Zone Act 2 but I'm not good enough at the special stages to pull that off, and smurf practicing Special Stage 6 until I am good enough.

I carried on with that game and it was obviously pretty much ezmodo with SS until I got to the Death Egg Zone. But I've remembered my old skills and so here we are. This is how far I can get before I got a game over:

Welp, MILF has locked down a guaranteed 5 points for Super Sonic, and a probable top 3 finish by reaching the end. Any other entries? I'd hate to not have a top five this time.

I'm somewhat sad to say I've been too busy these last couple of weeks to take a stab at it myself. I'm hoping for sometime during this week and on the weekend to make a run or two. Also looking forward to Starcraft this weekend. Hopefully it's not just me and Bubba but if it is then that's still cool.

I'll be submitting a picture this week for my Sonic 2 progress. MILF might have first place sewn up but I'm pretty confident of a top three finish.

Not been playing much Starcraft recently as it depresses me how pooh I am. I don't think I have the knack for these sort of games. I'm happy to give it a go though on the 24th. If it's just me and Vivi then that's a guaranteed 4 points which is fine by me!

That's unfortunate Freya. I may or may not still be up then. That's around 11:30 or so my time I think, and I was up early to go into the office and bust my ass on some extra work. If I'm still up I'll gladly have a game with you at least.

I managed to get my game up and running and connecting to Battlenet just fine (had some issues earlier). I created my account on the US East server and obviously recommend everyone else do the same. Hopefully there won't be lag issues for you Bubba, but we can try the different servers out if that's the case. My account name on there is Vivi22 so it'll be easy to find. I recommend we all meet up in channel EOFF when it's time to get started.

It's all good Bubba. We had a hell of a match between me, Madonna and Ed. I'll post the results later. I want to see if I have the replay properly saved so I can take some screen caps and everything. I may try to make it on later when Freya's on. I've got the itch to play some more now.

Also, if anyone is interested, I believe Ed and Madonna are going to have a rematch right now. And since we only had three people in that game, I'm more than happy to try and organize another to decide the last two spots. Perhaps later tonight if Freya still wants to play we can count that game, or we could organize something a bit later with some more notice?

Well, it seems that my attempt to save a replay failed miserably. I'll try and get this figured out in a bit if I can, hopefully before another game. I was really hoping to get some screen caps and include captions displaying my usual lack of wit and charm, but it's no dice unless ed fared better with the replay up until he was eliminated.

Cool. I remembered just now how to actually save replays (before I saw your last screenshot), and the fact that Starcraft crashes on me when the game ends for some inexplicable reason makes it impossible for me to do. Oh well.

And can I just say I hate Valkyries. I always knew they were good, but god I forgot how good. Nothing like throwing 48 hydras at you and having maybe 10 Valkyries chew through them like they weren't even there. In retrospect, more defilers and devourers would have been good. Slow your fire rate to a crawl and plague you to death.

It's all good. It can be a bit slow. Battlenet is pretty damn old at this point.

Yeah, sorry about that. I was busy with something and alt-tabbing back to SC every couple of minutes. Fun game though, even if it was a bit one sided. It was nice to see some carriers out.

For those curious, Freya is now holding down fourth place for the SC competition this month. I think we'll all need to have a free for all rematch sometime, though I think it would be a case of everyone ganging up on me until I was dead, then fighting it out amongst themselves afterwards. :D

Yeah, things have been fairly hectic for me. Selling a bunch of stuff while spending much of the weekend at the hospital finding out my wife has Gallstones is not conducive to finishing a competition. So what the hell, we'll run with it until Friday and then no more submissions. I'd still like to see some more and get a chance at it myself.

I finished the game but my score isn't as high as MILF's. I didn't go for the Chaos Emeralds and obviously I didn't play as Super Sonic so no Special Stage bonuses and lower level clear time bonuses for me. :P
