Seriously, I don't know how my weapon skill would increase without slugging it out with every flan encounter using physical attacks.

Flans were always 'okay' but nothing special for me. Until FFXIII. Then omg, wee-ooo wee-ooo wee-ooo, I was in love.

Flans are very manageable in FF2, and as you said, they help you build your skills. In FF1, of course, they were pains in the butt.
