Playing the NES version right now and I'm going against Bahamut. Why are all my attacks missing him and all my spells seem ineffective? I've been fighting him for 20 min now and I just managed to hit him with only 4 17damage blows. How do I kill him?

Are you talking about the early stage of the game? Where you're in the nest and you find Desh hiding among the eggs? If so, you can't beat him. The only way to advance is to run away.

Aha! I did that part too like that, I hit the bahamut for like 10 min then thought I should run away.

As I recall, right before the battle, Desh says something to the effect of "We can't beat this guy! Just make a run for it!" or something similar. That's supposed to be the game's way of telling you what to do, but because it's so generic, the hint is way too subtle.

I also skipped that part because if you hold down the button for even a second too long you'll skip dialogue. Thanks for the help Alpha.

No problem. Don't worry, you'll have a chance to get revenge on Bahamut much later in the game, if you want. Be advised that you'll want to talk to nearly everyone if this is your first time through the game. For as hard as it is, they do try to give you hints, even if they aren't very clear.
