View Full Version : Quina Is More Than Comic Relief

Well, to most people Quina is nothing more but comic relief, and some don't even count her/him as a being part of the group. Is this really fair? I mean, s/he is very come-and-go, but Zidane genuinely seems to care about what Quina's doing and if s/he is safe. Is this just a part of Zidane's good nature? To me, s/he is every bit as much a part of the group as the rest.

What do you think? Do you consider Quina as a genuine part of the group?

Nope. And I never play with It, either. I always hate when I'm forced to use Quina. It literally serves no other purpose than to get you Fossil Roo.

I love Quina, but I think it's not really in his/her nature to really be "part" of the group, because s/he never really cares about their purpose. S/he goes with them because it suits his/her own purposes.

I never liked Quina. S/he's obnoxious as a character to the point that I think everyone who loves her is just teamed up to troll the hell out of me (sorry Rantz). Mechanically Quina is a Blue Mage and I love Blue Mages... so long as their method for gathering skills doesn't involve tedium in a battle system that is already too slow for its own good.

File me away in the thumbs-down to Quina category.

I agree with FA. I don't understand why everyone thinks Quina is so cool. It's annoying.

Also, I hate blue mages.

Quina she's the stuff, but I have to disagree with Chris about Zidane caring about her because as I recall Zidane didn't want her to go the Iifa Tree with them and completely forgot about her after the event/ I remember her telling Zidane how she had to cross the ocean and fight a whole bunch of monsters and the only thing Zidane said was "damn" or something to that extent. He gave no mention about her either when she was left on Cleyra and then when he's teamed up with her in the Earth Shrine he said that "he was left with the leftovers".

It's kinda depressing how they don't care about each other. Quina comes along with everyone but if Quina ever gets lost it's like "where's quina? meh oh well." But if it was anyone else, say vivi, "OMG WHERE'S VIVI OMG OMG OMG"

I normally hate Blue Mages, and hated quina for the longest time but now that i'm forcing myself to use him/her on my walkthrough I'm starting to like him/her better.

I enjoy using Quina. Everything from the blue magic to the comic relief to the food related scenes are fantastic.

"You have problem!?"

I seriously love all of Quina's lines. This is one of my absolute favorites:

http://i44.:bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou:/2dtq2vq.png

"F-frog... Is talking. Maybe I eat it?"

I love how s/he turns around and begins to philosophize about whether or not s/he should eat it. Kills me each and every single time.

Oh yeah, and the fact that she considered to eat Eiko.

I think Zidane does care about Quina in his own way. Don't forget, he did bail him out with Grandma Pickle. And if he goes to Cleyra with the party and is thought dead, sure, Zidane doesn't mention him right away, but he does show his relief that he's safe later on, when he sees him back in the marsh.

And even if you could make the case that Zidane doesn't care about Quina, there are still party members who do. Vivi is the first and ONLY one to mention him when he, Zidane, and Freya all thought he failed to escape Cleyra before Odin destroyed it. Eiko also seems to like him quite a bit. And Freya actually says she likes Quina's tendency to just do whatever he feels like doing and feels like she must learn from him. He even teams up with Steiner to take down one of the monsters in Pandemonium before Zidane steps in to help them. Garnet and Amarant are the only two I can't get any pinned-down feelings for Quina in one way or another.

As for me, I enjoy Quina so much. He's my favorite character in the game. But his going in and out of the party just frustrates me to no end.

Quina being a blue mage means her primary purpose, in my mind, is to satisfy those wackos who like to find absolutely freakin' everything there is to find in a game if they enjoy it enough.

In a way, I kind of felt like Quina added its own view to the whole philosophy about "the meaning of life" that IX is all about underneath. S/he lives by a simple premise, as s/he explains to the Geonomes: "Life is simple. It has things you can eat and can't eat." He/she shows no concern for politics, nations, kingdoms or world-destroying narcistic villains. Quina kinda just goes with the flows and keeps things simple. One might argue that because all s/he cares about is food, s/he might be kinda selfish. I just see it more as a "carpe diem" kind of lifestyle. Take the day and worry only about your next meal, because all that world-saving just causes a lot of stress and that ain't good for your health. It's one way of living and, as Freya commented, perhaps one all the party members could learn from.

As do I. It has always pissed me off very much that this way of thinking is "childish" or "immature." Last I checked, all "mature" people did was fight wars, hoard money from little people and run smear campaigns on one-another, among other petty things.

I always found him/her to be one of the most endearing characters of the game.

Didn't really care for him/her in battle, but story wise s/he is highly enjoyable.

I loved the way that Square implemented Quina's tendency to drop in and out of the storyline. Here s/he jumps out of Cleyra, here she washes up in Maidan Sari and helps with the cooking. Easily my favourite character from the whole series in terms of how they join the party xD.

One of the most rep worthy posts I have read in ages.

Quina symbolizes freedom in my eyes, the ability to say "hey, I do what I want and if you have a problem screw you!" That's a pretty powerful lesson for most people to learn and most people don't learn that at times being selfish isn't a sin it isn't a crime and it most certainly isn't wrong on any scale. Sometimes we all need to be a little selfish to make it through, Quina is one of the best examples in video gaming history of this, I just feel the writers didn't quite know how to explain this point to the player.

To this day I still quote Quina when someone asks me why I cook too much for the number of people we have. It always makes me so happy when I am Quina is correct.

Character personality: Self centered, see's a town demolished and people dying, asks if theres anything to eat.
Battle use: Functional when were forced to use him/her, but not amazingly special otherwise or worth the effort of using
Character design: Quite hideous

I need at least one of these three qualities to be positive to find a character tolerable, Quina possesses none of them.

Infact I would question those who claim Quina is 'comic' relief at all.

I liked it in VII when it was called Hungry and it would shrink Cloud and eat him. Good times!

Quina is actually a good character, story-wise. I have to also say that s/he is also quite useful in battles too, being a blue mage and all. I think blackmage_nuke is just jealous oh Quina's popularity here. x)

quina is the best
best lines, very meaningful to the themes of the game,
and frankly a murderer in battle if you equip and teach him/her properly

one of my fave characters for sure

Quina can become very useful in battle. I didn't use him/her at all for a long time because I was put off but her limited relevance to the other characters and simple dialogue. But FFIX is a light-hearted game, so it's understandable there's more light-hearted characters. His/her lines are amusing as long as you're not taking the game too seriously.

I enjoy the fact that people miss out on one of the best characters purely based on their judgemental bullshit. It's like, Quina was deliberately made to look random as fuck just to point out all those prejudiced pricks.
