I like so many characters from different TV Shows like :

A long time ago I subscribed to Maxim magazine and they did their Top 50 TV show characters of all time. Before I even read the article my thought was 'the top 3 better be X, Y, and Z'. And it turned out that's exactly what they were. That top 3 (and my top 3) was:

3. Al Bundy - Married with Children was one of those few truly groundbreaking TV shows. The Bundy's were not afraid to be brash, lie, cheat, or make fun of each other. Al Bundy was the center of it all and there's never been another TV dad like him.

2. George Costanza - All of the Seinfeld 4 were great characters (well maybe not Jerry), but George was the perfect blend of neuroticism, dumb luck, and superficiality that made this show so great.

1. Homer Simpson - It's hard to argue with The Simpsons being the greatest animated show, sitcom, or even TV show of all time. Homer is the center of the family and thus an international icon. He's dumb as a post and selfish, but he does love his family. Homer's stupidity makes for some of the funniest situations and lines you will ever see or hear on TV.

You could argue Lucy Ricardo to be among the top 3 but Maxim is a men's magazine so obviously they'd be a little sexist.

As for shows that are currently on, some great characters off the top of my head are: Bart Simpson, Ralph Wiggum (too many great Simpsons characters to name them all so I'll stop), Sheldon Cooper (belongs on the all-time list I'd say), Stephen Colbert (he counts as a character), Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Jack Donaghy, Troy Barnes, Abed Nadir, Leslie Knope, Ron Swanson, Dwight Schrute, Sherlock Holmes, Walter Bishop, Jesse Pinkman, Walter White.

To stray from the classics a bit I would have to say that some of Modern Family's characters are up there for me as well. Phil is probably the top with Cam at a close second.

Back to the classics, I agree with Del and have to also say that Tony Soprano is also up there as one of the best.

Why Leslie Knope is better than Liz Lemon (from the Daily Beast - sorry it's long, but interesting!):



... Lemon is portrayed as an “exceptional” woman: the only smart, capable woman in a field of slutty, slobby, neurotic morons. The other women on the show, notes Doyle, are not friends or equals, but reminders that other girls can be so, so dumb—and therefore not worthy of feminism’s spoils. Liz barely interacts with any of these women. She certainly doesn’t have a deep friendship with any of them ... If Liz interacts with Jenna out of any feeling at all, these days, it’s frustration and the desire to condescend...

... The corollary point to that is that Liz spends time almost exclusively with the men in her office or whoever her current boyfriend may be.That current boyfriend of course, soon becomes an ex, because as we're repeatedly told, Liz is SO BAD with men.

She can’t keep a boyfriend, she’s never been married, she rarely has sex, in the company of men she’s awkward, weird, dorky, inappropriate, too smart, not sexy enough, too opinionated, not giving enough, just plain wrong. But women never show up and become important to Liz. Instead, she’s got hot- and cold-running boys.

... The character of Liz Lemon is played by beautiful, successful, smart, funny, apparently happy person Tina Fey, and is meant to be unattractive, only semisuccessful, smart, funny, and unhappy. It’s interesting that “smart” and “funny” get to stay in the picture, as long as the looks, the success, and the happiness are toned down; it tells you something about who you’re allowed to like. Cerie, on the other hand, is beautiful, unsuccessful (and unambitious), not smart, not funny, and very happy. And we simply aren’t meant to like her much.

... Leslie’s a staunch advocate for the advancement of all women through mentorship programs, positive role models, or grating, often unsolicited pep talks. So what would Leslie Knope think about Liz Lemon? That’s the best part, and the most telling: Leslie would be proud of Liz’s accomplishments. She would respect her desire for a husband and baby, and admire her career achievements. She’d encourage her efforts to get more respect as a female executive, while encouraging Lemon to reach out to the other women in her office. Leslie Knope understands that women’s advancement is about the advancement of all women, and that women need support from one another just as much—in fact, much more—than they need approval and access from the men that surround them.
