A few minutes ago, on VanaFest 2012, the development team revaled a new expansion that will be released sometime next year.

The expansion will take players to the "near west", across the sea from Tavnazia, and so far, the addition of a geomancer job is confirmed.

The name of the expansion is apparently "Seekers of Audolin", but the English title might not be exactly the same.

In addition to Geomancer, another new job will also be announced. The expansion also includes new areas and new stories.

The AF looks pretty stupid but I've always been a fan of the Geomancer job in principal and thought it would be cool to add to FFXI. Looks like this version will be a Enhancer/Enfeebler that focuses on stat-based magic.

Also notice that neither the site nor the video list support for PS2. Finally phasing out PS2 limitations? :O

The japanese site for the expansion still lists PS2 among the supported systems.

Are they going to release a Playstation 2 version of this despite the console not truly being active? That sounds like it would cause distribution problems. I'm surprised that they are still putting some work into this game after all this time.

Mirage is right. Under Supported Systems they have Windows® Xbox 360® for the US, English, French and German site. But the Japanese site has PlayStation®2 Windows® Xbox 360® listed. I guess they're dropping support for the PS2 everywhere outside Japan.

It is easy for SE to digitally distribute expansion packs. An entire expansion could be rolled out as an automatic patch if they wanted, if they have the server bandwidth to do such a thing with a large expansion for several hundred thousand players. In total, 6 add-on scenarios have been made available, and most people received them as automatic patches after buying them in SE's account management system.

This one will however most likely be released on DVDs, including the PS2 version in Japan. US PS2 players might not be able to get this expansion.

Oh man. Why do they keep doing this to me?

Someday I will leave this game behind. I like the sound of the "7 Native Warlords" and "12 Great Houses"
and Yggdrasil
