Well on the FF wiki they give the romaji as "raibura" which means the pronunciation, lie-bruh comes from "library" and not the scales, lee-bruh.

How many of you knew that? I only just found out and it blew my damn mind.

Forgot to give my own answer: I still keep saying "lee-bruh" despite being someone who consistently checks Japanese pronunciation when he's not sure. Saying that I also still say "Kwistis" instead of "Keestis" because I think it's a hilarious-sounding name.

Oh well. I still say lee-bruh.

Same as may-ko, and heir-iss.

Nope, fuck that. Lib, pronounced like the word "bib", and ra, pronounced like the "ru" in "run". I don't care that it's wrong, it's my way of differentiating between the astrological sign for master race octobros and the ability. The "official" pronunciation is jarring and ugh super unattractive as a word.

I thought it came from libro, which is book in Spanish.

I actually think I am constantly alternating between all three ways....

I thought it came from libro, which is book in Spanish.I thought it was pronounced the everyone pronounces the Constellation.

In this rare case, I have to say the Japanese pronunciation is flat out stupid. They were just afraid that pronouncing the "i" as "ee" would sound too Japanese and thus not exotic enough for their local fanbase. And "Keestis" is an effing stupid name too. I always pronounced it "kwistis" because the "kwi" at the beginning reminded me she was a card queen.

I remember hearing about this before. I know that its origin was from the word library, but I think that it is too difficult for most people to disassociate that word part with an identical looking astrological sign.

Yeah, Teedus is also stupid.

The fact that Tidus's name is never spoken once in the entirety of FF10. Necessitated by the fact you can change your name or just withheld because it sounds so stupid? You decide.

Indeed. It's "Kisutisu" in Japanese, not "Kuisutisu" or "Kyusutisu" or whatever it would've been. Quite different. Also the "qu = kw" thing is mostly English. Lots of Latin-based languages don't say it like that. Um, I think.

I'm still proud of the fact that I've been pronouncing Cecil's name correctly (Se:sil) cause See:sil sounds stupid and I would never name a child that unless I wanted them to be beaten every day of their life.

I never had an issue with Teedus pronunciation, if it sounds stupid, it's simple because he is stupid. :p

I think Mako was a bigger deal for me, and it's just another reason not to play the Compilation so I don't have to hear that awful pronunciation.

How IS it pronounced in the compilation? I'd rather swallow glass than experience any of that again.

Oh right. I have always pronounced it the supposedly "right" way because of "mako" sounding like a play on "mahou" meaning magic.

tbf, the word library probably comes from the same root that libro came from.

Anyways, that is interesting, and I will forever be amused by Japanese pronunciation of words. :p
