Liverpool were unlucky with the goal that was disallowed, though frankly, in my completely unbiased opinion, we would've been very hard done by to have lost that game. Also fair play to Rodgers as well, who in the interview I heard didn't dwell on the potential third goal at all.
I think, aside from a terrible first twenty minutes, we never seriously looked like losing that game. Having said that, at 2-0 down after twenty minutes, I was thinking I might have to revise my 6-0 prediction up slightly. It would've been nice to beat Liverpool, but I'll settle for a point. The lack of Pienaar and Gibson was plain for all to see today, in which we struggled to control the midfield and everything had to go through Fellaini or Baines.
The crowd were on Suarez's back all afternoon which wasn't surprising, though he didn't help himself. I did, however, rather enjoy the fan behind me who shouted, without a hint of irony, about Suarez being a 'racist foreign bastard.'

I'd just like to post an extract from one of my favourite BBC Sport articles in a while:
Steven Gerrard likens Everton to Stoke (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20135129)
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has likened Everton to Stoke, claiming their rivals used long-ball tactics during Sunday's Merseyside derby.
The Premier League match at Goodison Park ended 2-2 after Luis Suarez's late 'goal' for Liverpool was ruled out.
Gerrard, 32, said: "Every single time they get the ball to the goalkeeper it comes in long.
"There was only one team who came to play football and that was us. Everton are not better than us."
The statistics, however, showed that Everton enjoyed greater possession, made more passes and completed proportionally fewer long passes than Liverpool.
Given that going into this weekend we'd also registered the joint highest shots on target in the League, and had hit the woodwork more than any other team in the Premier League, I imagine Tony Pulis was quite flattered by the comparison.
Also what the hell, Reading. You were 4-0 up! How have you been taken to extra time? Dramatic last ditch goal by Arsenal though.

I think we may have edged that game if Ferguson saw fit to play a defence that didn't consist of players who's previous first team experience (excluding Rafael) didn't collectively amount to about 6 games. Quick not, I'm not grumbling but 3 minutes of stoppage time were due. Chelsea get a penalty in the 4th minute. I wonder how many will moa about it.
That smurf the defeat came in the Reserve Cup and not where it mattered.

I'd love it to matter more. I'd love every team to play their first 11 and make it matter. However it's not my fault they don't. The fact is teams play their reserves or players needing games in this competition. That game ended basically Chelsea's strongest team against out kids, reserves & Javier Hernandez. It's really hard to take it completely seriouslty. I like when we win a game in it and when we lose I'm not entirely happy but it doesn't affect me the same way a defeat in Europe or the League does. Just the way it is mate, Reserves make up the teams & it's going that way in the FA Cup too.
charliepanayi
11-01-2012, 12:20 AM
The fact the League Cup is low on the priority list for most teams kind of works in its favour. Teams just go for it and you get crazy, entertaining games like we had this week.
Heath
11-01-2012, 12:35 AM
I think charliepanayi is right.
While I personally sometimes don't like the fact that the likes of Arsenal, etc field second string teams, I think it makes the League Cup much more open than the FA Cup and often has more upsets, like Bradford's result against Wigan yesterday. And while it might be frustrating seeing my team knocked out by lower league opposition (cf. Brentford and Leeds in recent years) when we do put out second string teams, at least it means the make-up of the subsequent rounds is a bit more exciting. The League Cup will never have the magic of the FA Cup, but I think it can be just as entertaining.

11-01-2012, 04:12 AM
If every team played their strongest 11 would we really see teams like Leeds and Middlesbrough to get as far as they have? Boro probably because Sunderland are actually pretty damn terrible at the moment and seeing the mackems get beat always puts a smile on my face so yeah, maybe Boro could but still...
Also the match tonight was hilarious, Nani's temper tantrums were worth watching!
charliepanayi
11-01-2012, 09:58 AM
I think the League Cup would be better if it was just for teams who aren't playing in European competition - it should be noted that despite the top teams fielding youngsters and fringe players etc in early rounds, the winners of the League Cup over the last eight years have been by and large the usual suspects - Chelsea (x 2), Man Utd (x 3), Liverpool and Tottenham. If Arsenal hadn't been so useless against Birmingham, the list of winners in recent years would have been even more predictable.
Loony BoB
11-01-2012, 10:34 AM
We deserved to lose because a young defence conceded penalties in a way that they will hopefully learn from very quickly. After it reached extra time, our poor fellas in central defence never had the legs to handle the fast players coming at them. I felt a bit sorry for them at that point, but remembered how obvious they made the penalties and took it back. Keane was great, though.
Still proud of the team and after the last two games and how exciting / entertaining they were, I just hope we get Chelsea in the FA Cup and Champions League, too. Fantastic games! Everyone at work was going on about the quality of the game last night rather than who won.

Another good performance, another set of points dropped. Transition season and all that. Kind of relegation form though, so stepping it up a gear into lower-midtable form would be lovely.
How incredible was that from Luis Suarez though? He is head and shoulders above everyone else in this team. Definitely the most technically gifted player I've ever seen play for Liverpool. I'd put him up there with the likes of Bergkamp and Le Tissier - I just don't even comprehend what he does with the ball, let alone being able to copy it. Thank god he has a... lively... character so that more successful teams don't want to take him off our hands. Van Persie and Aguero aside, I don't think there is another forward in the Premier League who is at his level. I shudder to think where we'd be without him.

Today an injury-riddled Everton squad attempted to play football while Norwich tried their level best to play rugby. Everton also played terribly in the second half, and Mr. Moyes felt it pertinent to use no substitutes until the 90th minute after Norwich had just equalised. Quelle surprise! It makes no difference whatsoever and we throw away two points again.

If that's the most dangerous thing Fergie's ever seen in football you have to wonder where he was for Cantona's kung fu kick, Keane on Haaland, or indeed whenever Paul Scholes attempted to make a tackle throughout his entire career.
Oh well, that sure called my attention away from Man City gaining 2 points on them this weekend!

Agreed, this much is clear. Considering you have to go down to Fulham in 14th to find a team with a worse defensive record. We'll come unstuck again guaranteed though when our strikeforce has another off day. Obviously more than happy with a seven-point cushion at the top though... especially when you consider we've already played a lot of tough away games (Everton, Chelsea, Liverpool, City) and generally come away with all three points.

I'm confident that Chelsea will drop points away at Goodison tomorrow too. Our first game of the season against the toffees was the only game so far I've seen where we've been completely outplayed. In other news, Demba Ba in talks with Chelsea. I may be missing something here, but why are so many PL transfers domestic? The prices are ridiculous. Chelsea only want Ba because he did well at Newcastle; it's not like he was a trout player before that. I would have thought teams such as Chelsea would have vast scouting networks to pick up foreign talent before they came to the PL and added a magical £10M onto their price tag. I can't remember when the Swans last signed a domestic player. Pablo Hernandez has caps for Spain and has played in the Champions League, and he only cost 5 million.
Rocket Edge
01-02-2013, 07:29 PM
That's a good point, but he is only going for 7M I believe, that's what his release clause is anyway.
Still, teams like Man City and Chelsea probably don't give a toss about bringing up youth (Man City is coming bottom of the under-21 league last time I checked). When you have money to burn it's just a case of who they can bring in who's best regardless of any kind of money. Youth systems are becoming meaningless to the mega-rich clubs, but why wouldn't it when you can buy a ready made player?

Well they are desperately in need of someone and I reckon this could work out for all parties. He's couldn't get into the Chelsea or Man City team and he's obviously gonna get games now. It'll be interesting to see what kind of impact him and Suarez can have.
I'll see first hand next weekend anyway. My new girlfriend's Dad has given us his tickets for the game at Old Trafford on the 13th. Bring it on!
In other news, news of the highest levels of comedy, apparently today in training Mad Mario Balotelli floored Scott Sinclair, which enraged Mad Mancini to the point that he decided to kick the trout out of Mario. I'm sure I should be concerned at this news but the pictures of Bobby Mancini learning Mario amuse me too much. Surely this must be the end of the road for him now, can't see super Mario sticking around too long after this. Must have more to do with the ridiculous amount of untaken chances Mancini's given to him finally boiling over, rather than just a poor tackle on a guy who has played like two games for us.
re: Sturridge, I'm not really sure what he is expecting. He's said he doesn't want to play on the left or right, but Suarez is ridiculously broken this season in the middle of the 4-3-3 so there's no way he'll oust him on a permenant basis. It will be interesting to see how it plays out I guess but unless there's a change in formation or they start resting Suarez, he's probably going to be in the same situation he has been at least until the end of the season when someone inevitably pinches Luis (sorry pauw but you may as well start preparing yourself for the blow now)

I disagree with both parts of your argument. :colbert:
But the point I'll talk about is that Suarez plays as a lone striker. Van Persie plays with Rooney/Hernandez up front where (you would think) the goals will be shared between them for the season. Its the reason why Van Persie has 9 assists this season and not more goals. Same with Ba with Cisse (although Cisse is awful this season).
Theo was recently put into the central striker role and now he is banging them in for Arsenal. Same with Michu for Swansea (who have a worse midfield than yours). My point is that when you have a lone striker, everything is filtered through that striker. I'm not saying Suarez is bad by any means, he's world class but I've seen him play a lot and he is not the finished article, particularly when it comes to finishing. 15 EPL goals is great though so maybe I am talking shite. But best in the EPL? Not even in the top 4. I wonder what he would be like in a kind of Hazard role though?
Oh and, Liverpool do not have a bad midfield. Allen didn't work out for you nor did Henderson, but Gerrard has been in great form of late and Sterling has done a fine job all season. Dare I say it, but even Downing has been looking decent lately. :|

We're unbeaten in nine league games (winning eight of them) and that has to come to an end at some point. Plus, we were totally outplayed at Anfield (even against 10 men) and managed to grab all 3 points... our luck will probably run out on Sunday.

Villa (like Liverpool and Newcastle) have the weight of history behind them, they've been in the top flight for all bar one of the last 37 years and they won a European Cup in the 80s. Ashley Williams and Chico Flores best central defensive partnership in the PL 2k13. Absolute beasts.I learned today that the non-Welsh half of that pairing's name translates to "Boy Flowers". That is the best god damn name in football.
Cheerio!

I could be wrong but to keep Everton to a clean sheet is a great achievement since to recollection they have scored in pretty much every game I remember this season. The great Ashley Williams is the second coming of Rio Ferdinand.
See what I did there bitches? :smug:
See, unlike the way this thread goes, I will predict a 5-0 scoreline with Van the mothersmurfing man with a hat-trick. WE WILL BEAST OUR WAY TO EPL, YOU HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR LEAGUE!
Even tjhough I am still plastered out of my mind from last night this genuinely was the best I could come up with. Screw you Liverpool

Could've been a much worse scoreline than that, I'll take it. I quite like Andre Wisdom, and Joe Allen is as bad as Michael Carrick is good.

closer than it needed to be, we should have scored a lot more than one vin the 1st half.
Also Jamie Redknapp's liverpool bias is shameful. Attempting to prove Vidic was offside. Dick

Happy enough with that! Liverpool had a spirited second half but glad we could hold on.
Having £1 on Utd to win 2-1 with RVP to score first... has made it all the sweeter. Taking the missus to Gusto later to spend my winnings. Back for MOTD2 though!

Okay bias aside I actually really have a qualm with Jamie over this. He is so pro every other club than United that it's boring to watch (not that he was ever entertaining).

I don't think it'll be a mauling but I think Man Utd will win comfortably tonight (maybe two goals) with it being at Old Trafford.
If we win then we've likely got another Premier league team in the next round. Out of the last 25 FA Cup draws, we've faced premier league opposition on 20 occasions. Last time we got to the final we had a premier league team in every round. Who says we always get the plum draws?!

Oh my god I love you Luis, never change. xD Why the smurf would you ever admit that? Nutter. He'll never win a pen again now! Do a Gareth Bale and say "uhhh no i go flying to avoid injury" or something, jesus christ man. Glad he did it to Stoke though, they deserve it more than any other team.
Also Bubba is it true the United fans were singing "There's only one Maggie Thatcher" at the game on Sunday? Because that is smurfing comedy if so.
Also also, good for you Pep Guardiola. :)

Papers stunned as Guardiola doesn't join The Best League in the World(TM).
Chelsea win tricky away games at Stoke and Everton, and only get point from home matches against QPR and Southampton. Definitely a Rafa Benitez team. If they were still in the CL I'd have had a bet on them to go on and win it again.

Nice one, Rooney... for smurfing up my 2-0 bet. It was ridiculously cold last night but luckily there was was some scintillating football to keep me warm! Oh wait, no there wasn't...

I don't remember hearing it but that's awesome if they did! I was too busy singing...

Your teeth are offsiiiiiiiiddddeeeee!!!

Great result for the Saints at Stamford Bridge last night. Confirming beyond any doubt (if there was any) that the Premier League trophy will be up North again for another year.

Can't say I know what the Thatcher thing is about, looked it up and found a lot of Liverpool fans talking about it and a few United fans saying they don't recall it being sung. Must have been heard from somewhere, though... what's it about, anyway? Still haven't found any background to it. No comprendo. :(

If it is true, I assume it's about Hillsborough due to the recent release of documents showing Thatcher's government covered it up. I mean if you're going to sing about Hillsborough (not that you should, and not that anyone should sing about Munich either - we all know neither team's fans are innocent) then having a northern working class city singing for Thatcher is an amusing and ironic way to go about it.

I did witness some Hillsborough chanting though ("Murderers"... "You killed your own fans") which is obviously indefensible. There always going to be that small band of scum in both sets of fans though.
Any Luis Suarez chants though are more than acceptable!

Up there with Hughton and Di Matteo as some of the worst sackings I've ever heard of. Is it because you are from Spain? Typical -_-

Awful decision. That's Southampton down and Reading will likely be joining them, I reckon. Wigan v QPR v Aston Villa for the last spot.
Remember when Little Mickey dived to win us a pen v Argentina in the 2002 World Cup? The one Beckham famously scored? The guy he pretended to get fouled by is the new Southampton manager. Roll on Stoke v Southampton I say.
edit: I don't know why I just said "us" to a Welshman, a Cypriot and an Irishman. Which, incidentally, would be a good intro to a joke.
A Welshman, an Irishman and a Cypriot walk into the football thread on Eyeson. After settling down with a beer the Welshman looks around and says to the Irishman, "Where's the Cypriot gone, boyo? He's nowhere to be found". The Irishman then points out that "Little wee fecking Arsenal lost again didn't they, that's the last we'll see of that scrotey buggerbag for a month." "Ah" Said the Welshman. With that sorted out, normal service resumed and everyone spent the rest of the night laughing at Liverpool.

Liverpool's grossly unintimidating lineup of Andy Carroll
I just need something to occur that I feel strongly enough about. Like Psychotic truly believing that Andy Carroll is a great player, or something.
Both him and Carroll have had totally tit seasons yet they walked into the squad. HOW, GODDAMMIT?
