During a regular battle you should only have to hit the A/X button twice - for the auto-battle command and then for your enemy selection. Rinse and repeat for the rest of the battle.

But for some reason, I find myself hitting the A/X button several more times than I have to. Even when my attacks are already underway I find myself tapping the A/X button as if it does anything.

Does anyone else do this? Maybe it's just out of habit from the different games I've played over the years.

It's quite immersive isn't it?

Yeah I mash X pretty vigorously even though I don't have to. Had to replace the button halfway through Chapter 11.

No I hit Triangle/Y sometimes too to ensure my character is the dealing the death blows and so that I always end battles/enemies with the perfect number of attacks.

Yeah I also find myself doing that if I'm not paying a lot of attention (which happens often), but I also use Triangle to finish battles as fast as possible.
Maybe FF 13 would've been a lot better if they just took out the Auto-Battle option and left you to pick your attacks yourself every turn?

The JP demo doesn't have Auto-Chain/battle and the battles were completely built around the idea of queuing multiple attacks. I don't think the combat will be better without auto battle. Auto-chain/Paradigms made battles smoother and more involving than what demo did provide.
