Sometimes covers are just as good - if not better - than the original songs. What covered songs do you prefer to the original versions?
I maintain that Bauhaus' cover of Ziggy Stardust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWCQBtRzNJQ) is juuust slightly above David Bowie's. I'm a Bowie girl, but Bauhaus beats him out by a small margin for me. Additionally, I prefer Brie Larson's verson of Black Sheep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL9MKCgG-kI) to Metric's.
If anyone says Love Song, though, I'll see to it that they are banned.

Since I am quick to reply to threads like this without taking the time to really go in-depth, I will name 2 songs off the top of my head.
- Barry Manilow's cover of "Ships" is, IMO, better than the original by Ian Hunter.
- Gordon Lightfoot's cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is better than the original (or any other cover version, even the Roberta Flack version that hit #1 in 1972).

To be honest, I actually have a spot for covers. I never got why people hate them just because they're not the original (as opposed to simply not liking the song). At the end of the day, it's just a fan of the original song, singing his or her own version. I find that beautiful to be honest, so I love it when a good cover of one of my favorite songs comes out. EDIT: Oh, I like this equal to the original - not better. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfrOkH9QGBg&feature=plcp

Ah! Just got another one. Great Big Sea's cover of "End of the World As We Know It" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-5oGnvfUEU) is way better than REM's version, I think.

I liked Disturbed version of "Land of Confusion" better than Genesis

Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt".

Too bad Brie Larson didn't do the whole song of Black Sheep.
I really enjoy Fiona Apple's cover of Across the Universe. Which reminds me, I enjoy the whole Across the Universe movie soundtrack. Nothing to me beats the Beatles, but I still really enjoy and love those.
I like the cover of By Your Side that was in Scott Pilgrim. I hated it at first, but I got used to it and really like it now.
Overall, I don't have a problem with covers. Everyone else seems to though. There are a lot of covers I like better than the original songs, actually.
I like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" much better than the original by Nine Inch Nails.
I also love Leona Lewis' version of "Run", equal if not better than the original by Snow Patrol.
Oooh, and Goodnight Nurse's cover of "Milkshake" by Kelis is awesome.

Do you mean didn't do as in... that's not her singing the entire song or didn't cover their entire song? Because it sounds like her the entire time to me.
Also, Cat Power's cover of Sea of Love.

I like the darker version of Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" over the original, but I do like that version as well.
Sympathy for the Devil is GOAT cover.

She didn't do the entire song. I believe it's her singing the entire time, but she only does like, 1/3 of the song. I downloaded the soundtrack expecting her to have done a full studio cover, and nope. It's Metric. (Although I love Metric's version.)

Well, looks like I'll be the first person to say it.
I like A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine more than the original.
Their cover of When the Levee Breaks is pretty awesome too, though I wouldn't say better than the original.

NCG is my man.
Probably the two greatest cover songs of all time. Jimi's arrangement of what is in essence a three chord folk song is simply staggering.
The video of Johnny Cash singing hurt still brings me to tears.

Ah well, I'm okay with that. I do like Metric's version, but I like Brie Larson's voice more.

Red Hot Chili Peppers did a cover of Looking Glass's "Brandy" that was pretty awesome. Never did it on a studio album that I can recall, the one I have was off of the Live in Hyde Park album. Primus did a cover of Floyd's "Have a Cigar" that I'm a big fan of too.
I can't say either of these is "better" than the original, but I'm a fan of both. The one song I can think of that I genuinely liked better than the original was Frightened Rabbit's cover of My Brother Tom the Green Beret by The Philistines Jr. Alot of that can be attributed to the fact that Scott Hutchinson from F.R. has a voice that could sing Old McDonald and it would still crush your soul and make you want to drink scotch until you died in an alleyway behind a seedy bar.
Also, anybody ever who covered Belle and Sebastian. I love Belle and Sebastian's songs, but I cannot fricking stand Belle and Sebastian for some reason.
