BOT THREAD!!!!

After watching the Olympics closing ceremony it made me realize how many amazing bands we have produced. A ridiculous amount, in fact. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Muse, The Who, Led Zep, The Bee Gees, The Stone Roses, The Smiths. I was gonna do a poll but there are too many. So... I ask you... with my best Bot impression.

Please what list best you British Bsnd EVER!!! I is liking Beatles bestest, thank you please?

Let's be realistic, it's The Smiths. We don't need to play around here.

And then Blur.

And then Queen, The Beatles, The Stones.

And then Radiohead.

Probably Oasis right about now.

Black Sabbath.

Rest of the Britpop clan.

and I can't be bothered to keep going.

We make the best music but I wish we didn't have to share it.

But I take music too seriously.

If you don't know the name of the singles, the year and the winner, then you've made me upset.

It is my greatest regret that we didn't produce the operatic genius that was Daphne & Celeste. We could have had five Pink Floyds, they still wouldn't have reached their olympian heights of musical inspiration (or their mommas (or their daddies)).

I only really put The Smiths in there because a lot of my friends hold them in high regard. I have a lot of time for Johnny Marr as he is an excellent musician. Morrissey is probably the most unlikeable front man of all time. Overrated lyrics and quite possibly the worst voice in recorded music history.

I don't even need to Google this. 'Country House' v 'Roll with it'. 1995. Blur just edged it.

I really can't sympathise with you there. I'll accept that Morrissey is an idiot who is becoming increasingly difficult to like, but I can't fault his singing (which is still at a bloody high standard) and his lyrics remain some of the best I've heard in music. People weren't writing lyrics in pop songs like Morrissey was in the 80s. There's nothing mediocre about The Queen is Dead or Meat Is Murder, and arguably the whole landscape of 90s britpop would have been different without them (although I give Marr most of the credit for that).

Apparently Blur's Hyde Park show was hindered by serious sound problems. Would be such a titty note for them to finish on if that's it.

I dunno why we're ragging on the Stones when we have Muse in front of us here. New album is looking painful.

Consensus and popularity does not equate to being more relevant than something else. Wouldn't be the first time millions of people were wrong/had bad taste.

In fact, the music industry kind of thrives on the poor taste of the millions and has for years.

eh. Lost logic to make a point. excellent. I'm aware you can't please every little reactionary hater out there & I'm also aware that grestness is not measured in mass appeal alone. However we're not talking about mass appeal alone nowe are we. It's all about the music, the legacy & the influence on others. THe Stones stand tall on all three, on a par with the Beatles ad I'm sure they'd be just as respected by little ball roots if Jagger got shot dead too.

Anywat British band influenced music like no other nation. There's been bands and singers from the US that are true legends however when you look at the sheer amount of British bands that left a lasting legacy in music it's staggering,

Beatles, Stones, The Kinks, Zed Zep, The Who, Bowie, Queen, The Pistols, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Radiohead on and on and on.

However if i had to pick one that stands above all others it would definately be Chumbawomba

I just like a variety of music. I would say enjoying a wider variety of music increases your chances of getting laid, anyway, considering you can get on with most people when it comes to their musical tastes and can socialise easier when it comes to all kinds of musical interests. It's worked for me so far! Still can't enjoy thrash/death metal, though I can on occasion manage to find it amusing at the very least. Don't think I could ever like people with voices that make my skin crawl, either. Like Macey Gray. =|

To think of British music I really think to 70s and 80s bands, the era Britain pretty much invented heavy rock and heavy metal.

We've had the likes of Led Zeppelin, Billy Idol, Queen, Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Saxon, Motorhead. I mean hell, we also had ERASURE from these parts, do you guys realise how amazing it would've been to just have them play the Robot Unicorn song!? Awesome levels would have been through the roof but no. Sad times. =(

My favourite band is either Judas Priest or Black Sabbath or even Motorhead out the lot but we needed Erasure.

Of course, I'm torn. I'm in love with The Who, The Beatles go without saying, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, The Police, Pink Floyd, etc. have already been listed, but they are all absolutely stellar.

Wha? Is 'Paint it Black' the only song you guys have listened to? 'Can't you hear me Knockin'' is pretty much universally loved, and 'Sympathy for the Devil' is one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Heck, they went pretty unique with 'Ruby Tuesday', and 'Street Fighting Man' is just a perfect song altogether. This is all subjective, obviously, but if anything, I found that 'Paint it Black' was one of their weaker songs when you look at their whole catalogue. 'Gimme Shelter' is my favorite song by them, personally, and I certainly wouldn't call it garbage. I've left a bunch of songs out, but you get the idea. Give them another chance!
