Or do all the bosses for the first 9 or so chapters (which is what im up to on my first playthrough, so try to avoid spoilers) seem like theyre just randomly plopped down as a convenient way to end a chapter/section. Why do these boss fights so far have had no bearing on the plot and just conveniently jump out of nowhere?

While I am enjoying the game so far (I cant see why there is so much hate yet asside from vanille) i found this quite irritating

How is that different from most RPGs? 'Oh hey it's the master of this cave!' *boss fight*

There are usually a few plotbased fights dispersed amongst the randomboss encounters. I felt like XIII had none.

Well, that may be true. I actually don't remember much about XIII because it was a pretty forgettable game. The only boss fight that sticks out to me is Barthandelus.

Plot-wise, Barthandalus is also the only story-related you fight. Jill and Yaag (I think that was his name) you never fight.

Oh, and Cid, almost forgot about him. All the others seem to be random enemies indeed (not counting the Eidolons or final boss). Could be wrong, been a while since I played XIII.

yeah, XIII is king of loose, kind of funny how the most linear game has the least story related combat, whereas almost every boss in XII has something to do with the story in one way or another.

Actually, FFXII had fair a share of non-story/plot bosses much like XIII. It not really surprising as it pretty common for dungeon crawlers.

That's something I didn't notice, but probably ties into the reason why I felt like the plot was underwhelming and almost nonexistent.

It is true that random boss fights are a common trope of RPGs, but XIII almost parodied this concept. In Chapter 13, which itself is entirely random, you are at completely random points, even mid-room, teleported to a different room to fight a random scary creature, and then just teleported back to continue on your way.

As Elpizo pointed out, there's only a couple story-related boss fights. Hell, you're not even introduced to the main overplot until Chapter 9 or so, making it unsurprising there's nothing developed to fight beforehand.

We never really learn what they are. It's just like, hey random serpent robot thing sent by the government!

I guess FFVII did that too, though.

don't attack while it's tail is up!

I find this to be a common trope in all FF games. Though FFXIII did abuse it the most.

And after the second time, they become random encounters in the next room. The boss fights seem to just be there for a little boost in experience.

Not moreso than any other title I think.

I thought the boss fights were a little random, but then again in final fantasy there's always those random bosses :P so i think it's just you :P
