And so, for the 25th Anniversary, Square-Enix do what they do best: Rerelease their old games.

However, it is not as bad as it sounds, as this box set is a marvel of beauty. The box set contains
Final Fantasy (PS1)
Final Fantasy II (PS1)
Final Fantasy III (PSP)
Final Fantasy IV (PS1)
Final Fantasy V (PS1)
Final Fantasy VI (PS1)
Final Fantasy VII International (PS1)
Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Final Fantasy XI Vana Del Collection 2 (PS2)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
Special anniversary video disc
Crystal ArtWorks - an anniversary visual art collection
A two disc anniversary music selection CD
Final Fantasy XIV Mogu Mogu Earring item code
Mini replica of Amano FF 25th Anniversary visual and stand.

All this is priced at ¥35,000 (roughly £281) and available for release in Japan on 18th December. Sadly, there is no word of any kind of international release so far.

Here are some pictures (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/i430384-8/final-fantasy-25th-anniversary-collection-final-fantasy-25th-anniversary-collection.html#a403089) of this beautiful collection.

¥35,000 = $446.98 USD

I can get half of that stuff in the bargain bin at GameStop for $9.99 a pop. Seems like the bulk of your investment is in that flashy extra content. Doesn't seem worth it.

That's pretty slick, but yeah hella expensive.

The anniversary video disc is all the key staff members of Square-Enix pointing at the camera and laughing about how they'll never make a FFVII remake.

You know when you ask children questions about money, and how much things might cost? To them, £20 is some colossal figure, so in their minds it can buy a car or a house! Square-Enix suffers from the same problem, only inverted.

Having said that, beautiful is exactly the right word to describe it, and turgid is exactly the right word to describe me upon seeing it.

That's actually pretty cool, though I can't imagine paying hundreds of dollars for games that I already own (and who would have even heard about it without owning some FF games?).

I suppose it can be tailored toward someone who wants to play Final Fantasy but never got around to it.

I already own all of these except 11 and 3 psp or I might go for it.

I think the kicker is owning all those systems still. I know a few people who do not dispose of all their old consoles as time and technology progresses, but I also know a lot of people who change their game libraries like a seasonal wardrobe. Well, those people are probably not the ones looking for a collector's box, so never mind.

As beautiful as the set is, I cannot see dropping five-hundred bucks for a collection of mostly PS1 games.

Square Enix has quite a lot of faith in their fanbase who might wish to purchase such a thing. People will, for sure, but I am with the others in this thread: it is too pricey for something which I would not get a lot of use out of. I own most of these already! The bonus stuff would be quite nice, however.

I want it, but damn, the price is disgusting. I'll end up buying it anyway.

But why use the PS1 versions of FFs IV-VI? IV has got the vastly superior DS and PSP versions, while the GBA ports of V and VI don't have the loading times everybody here seems to be complaining about. Personally, I don't see anything so special about this package...

Fancy artwork aside, that's... a half assed collection. Six of the games have newer releases to them than the PS1 version included, and frankly, the first 9 games should have all been slapped on one PS3 disc instead of spreading the entire collection across 4 gaming systems.

It's not really intended as a practical purchase, it's for crazy people who can spend lots of money so they can say 'hey, I own one of these!'

Yup.

Or they could all be on their own PS3 disk so we still get fancy artwork on them? Either way, it seems a bit... strange.

Also with them now being a multi-format company they ought to have brought a 360 version out where either the older games were available as XBL downloadable titles or ported on to dvd now whilst you might need a few more discs than the 1 blu-ray it'd still put the entire collection on something like 5 dvds.

I dare say Sony would have something to say about that, what with at least one of the PS collection of FF games being in the top 5 PSN downloads every month.

I'd get it, but it'll be a NRFB.
