ENGLISH FRENCHMAN WHO'S A SEX GOD

come on, LaddyThe answer is obvious.

Picard read Ulysses in his spare time. HIS SPARE TIME.

And he's the captain of the goddamn Enterprise

Plus he plays the flute, but he's like "Fuck you, I'm manly. You wanna say something about me playing the flute?"

And no one ever did. Except for that hot chick who played piano that he boned.

Picard simply had more character then Kirk, and was better suited in the role of captain.

Plus his Face Palm is way more bitching.

Picard doesn't need to even stand up to kick Kirk to the curb. All he has to do is exist.

Now a good matchup might be Liam Neeson and Chuck Norris tag teaming against Picard.

Okay I love Picard and voted for him but Kirk is in dire need of some love here. The great thing about Kirk was that he was what everybody secretly wanted to be: rash, bold, a smartass, and picking up all the alien chicks.

I agree that Kirk wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. The banter between Kirk, Bones, and Spock is some of the best parts of the Original Series. He is just not Picard.

Well considering he used to have some lingering negative feelings about his time on Star Trek and the fans he might be cool with it.

Than again, Patrick Stewart did cure him of those negative feelings.

I have respect for the original series, and if you enjoy Star Trek, even if it's not your favorite, you can sit down and watch the episodes and enjoy yourself.

I think a lot of it could be at least partially do to a generation gap. We all grew up with Picard. Kirk was some brash, overly dramatic jackass that commanded with his libedo. He's okay, but he's the captain of a different generation of fans.

It's more than just the generation gap. I rarely watched Star Trek growing up, and when I tried to get into it, started with the original series. It was ok, and entertaining to varying degrees. TNG did pretty much everything better: better writing, better development, dealt with deeper issues (torture, witch hunts, what is life, what is "reality," etc.), and had more in-depth characters. Picard was much more complex than Kirk, and of course it didn't hurt that Patrick Stewart is an incredibly complex actor.

I agree that if you took someone of any age that hadn't seen either series, they would probably find TNG, it's writing, and characters like Picard better. What I meant by generation gap was the people that grew up with Kirk. Nostalgia does things.

Laddy
09-08-2012, 07:32 PM
Let's talk about leadership. Basically the difference is that Kirk may be good at some things, but Picard is either just better or can find smarter solutions to things.

Kirk is smart and resourceful; Picard is an intellectual and a tactician.

Kirk is hot-headed; Picard is cerebral.

Kirk is a ladies' man; Picard is a gentleman.

Kirk is a man of impulse; Picard is a man of strategy.

Kirk is a fighter; Picard is a diplomat.

In short, Kirk was a great character in a great series, but Picard is the man I'd want in my Captain's Chair. (Not a euphemism.)

My grandfather was in his 30s with Star Trek, and late 40s/early 50s with TNG. He prefers TNG. My mum and uncle grew up with Star Trek, but prefer TNG.

The banter between Kirk, Bones, and Spock

This is one of the best things about Star Trek ever.

Edit: Adding that I do agree that TNG was the best Star Trek, with DS9 very close behind, but it's hard for me to say much bad about TOS because the movies, especially, did so many things right.

The Man

Kirk, Bones, and Spock are a pretty archetypal Freudian trio, and the execution was superb both in the original series and in the new film.

Nothing beats Picard, though. I'd probably agree with the ranking of TNG > DS9 > TOS > other Star Trek.

Voyager is at least better than Enterprise. I agree that it's worse than TNG and DS9. TOS is 3rd just because of the Kirk-Spock-Bones dynamic and it had George Takei going nuts with a sword.

Voyager is at least better than Enterprise.

I'm honestly not so sure since it's been so long since I watched Enterprise. I think I may actually hate Voyager a bit more. Yeah, Enterprise was bad, and Scott Bakula certainly did deserve to be on a better Star Trek (but we'll always have Quantum Leap), but at least it didn't start out with a cool premise and by the second episode completely abandon it. Or fill the show with as many terrible alien villains with half assed nose prosthetics as it could. Or try to drown people in even more unintelligible techno babble than usual to distract us from the fact that they're hand waving their way out of a problem again. Plus it didn't make a complete mockery of legitimately cool villains like the Borg.

Oh, and Enterprise didn't last for 7 years.

The only upside to Voyager was the Doctor, and the episodes with Reginald Barclay. Though sometimes even the Doctor got episodes that amounted to bad rehashes of excellent episodes from other series, particularly the episode that basically ripped off the trial of Data, but had him fighting for the rights to control his holo-novel. Except having rights to you work isn't nearly as interesting as potentially being a slave and forced to partcipate in dangerous experiments. And they waffled on the conclusion.

Have I mentioned I hate Voyager?

charliepanayi
09-09-2012, 01:23 PM
I agree about the Doctor being the best thing about Voyager by a country mile (Picardo is just brilliant in general), though I liked that episode with the book he wrote, if only for the funny portrayals of the other characters in his book.

I must concede here that I have no watched all of Voyager, and specifically not that episode. Which is good, because that was one of my favorite TNG episodes and I would not want to see it butchered. :(
