37096The dynamic duo of Biggs and Wedge. Everyone has heard of them from the great mind of George Lucas in the original Star Wars film, and the pair has since made small appearances or cameos in the Final Fantasy series. There will be several installments of their great misadventures throughout Final Fantasy. Their first such appearance was in Final Fantasy VI, even though Biggs was originally mistranslated into Vicks.

What were they doing then? Why, they were in the opening scenes of the game, of course! They were assisting the lead character, Terra Branford, in a raid on the town of Narshe as soldiers of the Gestahlian Empire. They were sent there to carry out the investigation of a frozen Esper discovered by local miners. With Terra coming along, it was assumed that the rumors of the Esper was being taken seriously, and who wouldn't want to come unprepared?

However, the Narshe Mines were being well protected by Narshe's guards. Biggs and Wedge, while being led by Terra, fought through the guards with quite ease to reach the new shaft where the Esper was being held. Before getting there, they had to also battle a monster called Ymir, which was trained by the guards to protect the mine at all costs.

The battle with Ymir was fought. It was tough for the weak Level 1 soldiers, but they ended up victorious while under Terra's command. With the monster gone, they finally came across the frozen Esper Valigarmanda. As they slowly approached the Esper, something strange was happening. A sudden reaction was happening as it glowed in the presence of Terra. Moments later as Terra approached the frozen Esper, bright flashes of light flickered and soon Biggs and Wedge disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again.

What could have happened to them? No one really knows. Heck, nobody has even bothered to report their sudden disappearance to the Gestahl Empire, so it was thought that they might have immediately died on scene, thus ending their misadventures prematurely in Final Fantasy VI.

Next time in the Misadventures of Biggs and Wedge, we'll get to see them in Final Fantasy IV.

Biggs and Wedge really do get put through the ringer. Poor guys. They weren't even given any respect in FFVI. No grave sites, no funerals, no nothing! We just never hear from them again! Sad fate for the first named characters we meet!

There was a joke in some Japanese gaming magazine that Biggs and Wedge didn't die in VI, they were simply transported to the Chrono Trigger Universe.
