This man knows what he's talking about. Although I disagree about seeing a basis for crossing Zs unless you make your 2's as written on a keyboard rather than with the loop at the bottom. In which case the problem is still needing to write better.

This. I didn't even learn to write until I was nine and I probably have better handwriting than most of you :colbert: all my letters and numbers are easily distinguishable as what they are. Especially if there are both letters and numbers. So "oh well they look similar and if I'm writing letters and numbers together" is no excuse. When doing calculus I make a very slight dash inside the circle near the top as I'm drawing it so it's distinguishable as a zero but not dumb-looking. Also 0 is skinny and O is plump anyway. 1 always has a base and that extra little dash thing at the top, but it stand up straight so it's easily distinguishable from 7, which is slanted and doesn't have a base. Plus I draw 2 with the little curly at the bottom so it's distinguishable from Z. Take a calligraphy course or something, jeez.

Additionally, my 4s are always open, and 5s are written with "short vertical line, three quarter circle, then horizontal line at the top last". I used to write 5s with one single continuous line when I was a kid, but this feels much cooler.

I do both. Though I did neither before I took Complex Analysis in college. There are so many 2's and so many z's, often in the same formulae, that it becomes essential. Eventually I started crossing my 7's; perhaps because a 7 is just 2/3 of a Z.

The thing about crossing your zeros--they should only be crossed when zero is the only number. Example: You should not cross your zeros in the number 600. You should cross your zero for $0 (if you were counting a drawer or something.) The reason that line is there is that so someone can't add a number before it, and fraud money (turning 0 into 70 or something.) So you know that zero is the true answer.
Some serial numbers have 0's and O's. Some people write their 6's very similar to the 0's and it can get confusing. There are often good reasons for people to cross their 0's. I do it for serial numbers, personally.

That's a great point, BoB. When I was working for Samsung, it was a pain in the ass having customers try and read their serial numbers to me. "Is that a 5 or an S? A B or an 8?" Oi....Maybe Samsung should cross numbers on their serial numbers....or make the bloody thing bigger...

A lot. I don't sit around and code all day, I'm normally skimming through a lot of already made code looking for possible causes of defects, which includes a lot of writing jists of lines of code with line numbers.

Makes sense I guess. Still can't help but feel it's weird and unnecessary. You can show my stuff from 5-10 years ago and I can read it perfectly, regardless. All about having distinctive writing I guess.
