Who wants to read Les Misérables with me? The movie musical is coming out in December and we must be ready! :excited:

I'm in! (shh I've already read it)

I'd be game! :D

(And we'll have to read Great Gatsby when that comes out as well--one of my favourite books of all time!)

Are you interested in doing a book club, book club, or a one time thing? I think it could work if we maybe decided on a book once a month. Since we all have busy lives, it allows for people who read faster/slower to finish at their own pace and not feel rushed. We could each make a suggestion each month, and then make a poll. :)

I'd be totally down for a monthly book club but I think the last time EoFFers tried this, it fizzled out after one book? Howl's Moving Castle I think.

But yes, Great Gatsby! We should read all the books with movies coming out. :p Which includes The Hobbit!

Oooh, I definitely should read The Hobbit again.

Ok September is almost over so Les Miserables can be our October book. It's public domain now so you can download it for free via Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/135) if you want a digital version.

The Hobbit should literally take everyone like 1 week max to finish so that would be good for December since most people will be busy during that time I think.

Make a version for new (ish?) books and I'd be interested, but I tend to do the classics in spurts where I read nothing else for a while and then stop for three to five years.

I vote 1984 for November!

Do you have any recommendations? I read about 4-5 contemporary books for every classic that I read. I could give a laundry list of contemporary books that would be book club-y but it'd be nice to read something I haven't already read.

Still, what would draw me to such a club isn't reading my own suggestions, but discovering new books the way I did with God Hates Books when GHF was still around. GHB introduced me to Anathem, Joe Abercrombie's books, and The Lies of Locke Lamora, all of which were great.

I hated with an absolute passion Ready Player One. It's one of the worst books I've read in awhile and yet somehow, adored by the masses and by critics. I can't even with that book.

But yes, I do agree that one of the best parts of a book club is getting suggestions. I lurk through a bunch of book club blogs/groups just to get suggestions for new books.

We can gather up all the suggestions and then make a poll to vote on the November book.

Has anyone read The Thirteenth Tale?

Miriel

I read it a few years ago. I remember it being good, but it's very Bronte-esque and I've never been a huge fan of the Bronte sisters.

If the hobbit is read I will join as I've been meaning to read that.

I came to this thread thinking "man I am going to have to buy books to be in this thing" but lo and behold, I have most of what has been mentioned so far!

I am down to read Les Mis. I am down for foa's book/month idea. We begin October 1st? (or before?)

Jiro

Let's make it an October book. How does this work? Do we like, discuss it as we go, or do we have regular posting days or do we say "read it before the third week and then we discuss for one week" or something?

Del Murder

I would discuss as you go but put in spoiler tags anything that is major plot-related.

You are banned from the book club. :colbert:

I'll make a new thread for discussing Les Miserables. This thread can be a general thread to discuss the book club, suggest future books, etc.

I would be all for reading Pikes book because I still haven't despite giving her my money some time ago. I somehow got sidetracked reading every single graphic novel that I own again.
