or, words you live by.

Lately I've been trying to adopt "slow down." I speak before I think, I jump to conclusions, I go through motions without waiting to think about consequences or end results or I'm just plain sloppy and trying to get through something as quickly as possible so it comes out wrecked.

What are your personal mottos, or something that should be your personal motto/words you live by?

I got my personal motto from a Fiona Apple song:

Be kind to me, or treat me mean--I make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine

I also take my motto from a song:

Get up, get on up,
Get up, get on up
Stay on the scene, get on up
Like a sex machine, get on up

Helped me through a lot of hard times.

Yes, such as when I overcame a crippling leg injury. :doublecolbert:

Stay on the scene, get on up

When I read the word 'Get' I expected the lyrics to be

Get on up when you're down,
Baby, take a good look around,
I know it's not much, but it's okay,
We'll keep on moving on anyway

I feel dirty :|

More like "10 more turns"

My own personal motto could be seen as one of 2 things, both strike similar chords in me but one is a little too long to be called a motto even if it is going to be my first ever tattoo. The first is 3 lines from a song by Rise Against, pretty much everyone who knows me is going to know this already but for those who don't and for my post to make sense:

We've all been sorry,
we've all been hurt
but how we survive is what makes us who we are

The second is a speech given by Sir Winston Churchill in his later years, it was delivered to new students at Oxford and is probably remarkable for being one of the shortest speeches delivered by any politician or former world leader at any point in history (other than the memorable response of the Spartans to the Persians when they refused the Persian offer of "If" of course) the speech reads as follows:

Never, ever, ever, give up

the second is much shorter and more motto like it's certainly words you could fit in to a crest or coat of arms. The former is more like a proverb to live by.

Don't have a personal one since I personally find it silly to stand by one slogan or a slogan at all. I just tried to look up a family motto, but all I could find in the immediate lineage were coat of arms :(

I'll just do without.

Yeah, I'm about the same as Faris when it comes to mottos. I don't exactly have one, but if I did, I'm sure it'll be something like, "Eh, just let it be."

Honestly, I should probably try this one but it's difficult when my brain doesn't understand the meaning of the word slow down. Simply keeping my mind from jumping haphazardly from one thought to the next as quickly as possible is difficult. Just seems to race all of the time.

As for ones I actually try to follow, lately I suppose "just keep swimming" may apply. Though it doesn't seem to be nearly as uplifting as when Dory says it.

You can never have too much lube.

Well, you can... but it's better to have too much than too little.

Also, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it; I guess I should start carrying around lube.

Just get drunk and do it.

But I don't really have any words that I live by. Maybe I should spend my free time hunting for some inspiring sentences.
