What was AVALANCHE doing immediately prior to the start of the game? I don't recall if we're ever made privy to this. Talking to Biggs and Jessie as you enter the reactor yields comments about AVALANCHE operatives who gave their lives to obtain the codes to break in, so there was clearly some espionage going on there. But the Mako Reactor No. 1 is the first one they assault.

So what do you think AVALANCHE was doing before that to be able to call themselves an "anti-Shinra" group? They seem relatively well organised too, which means this wasn't just a slapped together haphazard plan. AVALANCHE is one of the most mysterious rebel groups we ever encounter in Final Fantasy.

The group went snowboarding in the mountains to take some leisure time and think of a name. Barrett accidentally fell over while dodging a tree and his gun discharged. The group had to out run an avalanche in order to avoid dying. So, for awhile the group was called OHCRAPRUN until they settled on AVALANCHE.

Do we want to include the compilation in this discussion? :p

If it's relevant, I guess. I know there was a previous AVALANCHE led by Rufus of all people but I want to focus purely on what the Barret-led AVALANCHE was all about.

I'm more concerned by the capslock.

Barrett talks in all caps lock. The game doesn't show it, but he do.

AVALANCHE was a four part boy band backed by Shinra. The name was supposed to be oxymoronic as all the members were black. One night, while on their way to Junon to play a show, the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel and the bus crashed. The accident proved fatal as three of the members died and Barret lost the hand he held the microphone with. Shinra axed the project and Barret became bitter, vowing to never sing again and to do all that he could to get back at the Shinra. :|

Perhaps Barrett wanted to start up a new boy band? He recruited a whiny, pretty boy.

Due to G13 and Flying Mullet's avatars being similar, I thought G13 replied to himself.

You do realize the term avalanche is also used to describe actual rockslides. Whiteout would be a more oxymoronic name.

I had vague recollections of reading somewhere that AVALANCHE tried to engage in a propaganda war against the Shinra by leafleting and the like. I don't think they did anything as exciting as blowing up reactors before then.

Though the canon answer is obviously what Sephex posted.

Handing out leaflets is exactly what I look for in an eco terrorism group. "CUT DOWN MORE TREES WE NEED MORE LEAFLETS."

They could be made from recycled paper or using paper from sustainable forests :p

Or they could be made from tanned baby seal hides.
