East Coast 'Frankenstorm': Hurricane Sandy plus winter storm has forecasters spooked - San Jose Mercury News (http://www.mercurynews.com/science/ci_21852823/east-coast-superstorm-hurricane-sandy-plus-winter-storm)

I'm BARELY getting hit by it, but regardless, that sounds like a serious force of nature. Must look AMAZING from an aerial view. What's the worst weather related disaster you've been a part of? We had a huge blizzard here in February 2010 that completely crippled the community. I had to drive three and a half hours home from work and saw at least two dozen cars wrecked and abandoned on the side of various roads. Numerous communities were lacking electricity for weeks at that!

anyone in the northeast remember the storm from last year's Halloween? yeah, that.

Huge blizzard at the end of October 2011. Caused major damage because there was about a foot of wet snow and most of the trees still had most of their leaves, so many trees were lost or heavily damaged. class was canceled for like 3 days. my parents didn't lose power though, which was nice because I went home. :3

and the Feb 2010 storm caused some nice damage too. a transformer exploded a block over from where i was living. my neighbors got a couple videos of it happening and posted them to youtube: 1 (warning, uncensored language) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10taCbggdBU) and 2 (shorter) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv0kvQAzTm0). first one is a better view but a bunch of shakycam for the first 30 seconds or so

Looks like she'll be on top of me Tuesday. I'll probably still be expected to go into work. "We'll worry about it after you're dead" has been my employer's policy on weather closings.

Oh wow, it's supposed to go right over me here in the east coast of Maryland.

Fires. Fires almost burned my place down last weekend. They succeeded in '95. They've tried again multiple times over the years.

Tornado of 06/06/10 has been the worst for me so far. As for that Frankenstorm, I'm just barely outside of that over in humble ol' Ohio :p

I don't know if this counts, but we get these in California.

Feb 2010 we had a huge ice storm and I was pissed cause I was scheduled a surgery and it was delayed weeks cause the storm knocked out an entire blocks powerlines. Ice was so heavy it broke poles. Twas crazy.

Other than that, blizzards a lot in wyoming. Oh and that tornado that hit my tree in front of my house earlier this year. That was pretty cool too. OH and when I saw that tornado tear up half a town in wyoming back in like 05?

The worst weather related disaster for me would I guess be earthquakes back when I lived in California in the 90s, but they weren't strong enough for much of our stuff to fall over. Not really weather, but lol close enough.

I pretty much lucked out when it came to hurricanes. Rita (?) and Ike came to my area of Texas, but both times I was in Austin (central Texas) for college. I didn't have to deal with that outrageous evacuation trout for Rita. My family did, though. D:

We get a tiny bit of snow in England and the whole country stops. I hope it snows this Christmas.. that's about as much weather excitement that we get, the will it/wont it snow debate.

I'm surprised how little I've heard about this storm. It looks bad.

Worst I ever experienced would have been the ice storm in Fayetteville in 2009. Everything was caked in 1/4" of ice. You didn't walk anywhere, you just carefully slid and hoped you weren't on too much of an inclined surface. Class was canceled for a full week.

The best, I mean worst weather I've had was in I think '93. Huge blizzard that kept me out of school for a week. More recently, a year or two ago, there was a hurricane that knocked the electricity out and caused some bad flooding in my basement. :(

I have never been involved in anything more than a blizzard as far as natural disasters go.

We had earthquake training last week, though. It was kinda scary.

There was a hurricane last year that didn't really hit the area I lived too badly (it still did) but I missed my first and second days of school because I was in Boston visiting my mom and I lived in Ottawa and transportation was canceled. I was supposed to take the bus back and I told my mom that I should leave a day early to avoid the storm because I knew it was all going to be canceled but she told me not to worry. Sure enough it was canceled and when I did finally leave the bus even left four hours late. I was quite upset.

First off, wanted to wish everyone in the Northeast good luck. Stay safe (and dry) today.

Being in Illinois, it was mostly storms with the rare tornado touch. It usually doesn't get that big though so it's not Twister quality. The snowfall of 2010 was the most notable weather of late. Thankfully I was just living in an apartment at the time, but now that I bought my first place I'm taking a more active note of the weather.

I had just started my military career for the California wild fires. They weren't far from my training area.

Also the blizzard of '93 for me. We had snow drifts taller than 7 year-old foa! I thought my cat got trapped in one, but he was in the woodshed. So I dove off the porch into the drifts.

Right now it's snowing a bitch. I've also had a tree fall on my house due to rain. Sucked.

We've had ridiculous snow storms where the snow goes halfway up the door and -40 degree weather and such here. Not that anyone cares; in Montana there's no such thing as snow days. You tough it out and go to work/school.

it rained.

the wind blew.

Power went out for maybe 5% of our city.

Living here is sweet.

Loving the hardy spirit in here. Hope everyone made it through unscathed, and glad you gave that hurricane what-for! Way to go guys :D

Have to admit it had me worried over here, I have a close friend who was in the middle of it in NJ with no power and the media was making it look very nasty (and he was rather worried about it himself). I was so glad when he texted me this morning to say everything's ok :shobon:
Welp, I'm British. We freak out at a bit of drizzle. I should've come here for an example of a proper reaction to this thing hehe.

I survived, so you all may rejoice now. The hurricane was fairly underwhelming here, as usual, but I still was busy the past couple of days due to running errands beforehand and then trying to keep the driveway from flooding during the storm (which it always does in heavy rain/snow because it's down a hill). Thankfully it never got too bad and we did not lose power for more than about 10 seconds (though others around here did).

Who remembers when the entire North Eastern USA and southern Ontario area was knocked out (I think it was at least 7-8 years ago) ? That was pretty bad. My brother was trapped (literally - subways stopped working and everybody piled onto the buses) in Downtown toronto and reported that ice cream stores were giving out free treats.

Rama was open through the blackout. They had shirts that said 'I survived the blackout.' Best blackout steak I ever had.
