ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), also known as AIHO (Attention induced head orgasm), is a physical sensation characterized by a pleasurable tingling that typically begins in the head and scalp, and often moves down the spine and through the limbs.

Some triggers of ASMR include:

•Slow speech patterns, accents, soft-speaking voices and whispers.
•Lip sounds/smacking/eating
•Clicking sounds, brushing sounds, white noise, etc.
•Painting/drawing
•Instructional videos
•Watching other people performing simple tasks
•Getting close, personal attention from someone (eye-exam, make-over, etc.)
•Haircuts, people playing with your hair

As someone who experiences ASMR, i'm not really sure how to explain it to people who don't feel the "head tingles".

There is a community on YouTube dedicated to making soft spoken ASMR videos, and I watch these every night to help me sleep, as well as just for relaxation purposes.

Here are a couple videos I really like, let me know if you feel anything watching them. Does your head tingle? Do you feel relaxed? Anything? Headphones highly recommended.

Is this some sort of black magic or what?

I actually don't have a set of headphones available to me now, so I can't check them!

They made my head tingle a little (I think?) but then I got distracted by the irritating lip smacking noises and I had to close the videos after thirty seconds or I was going to go crazy.

Does getting tingles and shivers when listening to music count?

I never really experienced the full effects of what people claim to feel, but this video sure is nice:

Dude, Bob was amazing... you can't buy naps like that man.

Also I find it very comforting when someone has a nice voice, I could listen to Max von Sydow all day. :D

The lip smacking is actually enjoyed by a lot of people and helps create the tingle, myself included. It seems to be one of those "love or hate" sounds.

I don't see why music would be excluded from ASMR. I mean, the feeling comes from all different sorts of noises. Do you have any music in mind?

Now that I think about it, wind chimes are relaxing with a soft breeze.

I was about to make fun of the OP, but then I realized that I've actually felt this before. When people played with my hair, and I'm sure other times, but I would need to think about it. Anyway, this is not as alien sounding as it initially seems.

but i haven't experienced anything similar via whispers etc

My mind is so blown right now.

Lone Wolf Leonhart, your videos are... uh, kinda creepy for my tastes what with the whispering and all. But I used to watch youtube makeup videos to help with insomnia. I could watch one video and it's like instant relaxation. And don't even get me started on having someone play with my hair. Hair cuts make me feel like I'm a relaxation high for HOURS afterwards. I guess this is the reason why I can watch boring ass repetitive trout and feel like I'm walking on clouds afterwards. O_o

Apparently this is a related phenomenon called frisson, which I get all the time too from music. I am learning so many new things right now!

I'm sorry you're not a fan of the videos, Miriel. I can see why people would think the whisper videos are creepy, I guess I'm so used to watching them that the thought rarely occurs to me. It probably would have helped if I put up a better variety of videos.

At least I was able to help you put a name to the feeling :D

Those videos were boring.

That's almost the idea, actually. They're intended to be calming/relaxing/soothing as a large amount of people who watch them are trying to get to sleep.

Funny thing, I was watching some Bob Ross videos a month or two ago and from there ended up YouTube linking until I ended up learning about ASMR and finding some I really liked. I don't usually get much out of it but there are three people who really do it for me and make my brain feel so tingly and good. When I was a kid I would occasionally come across someone whose voice is just tremendously compelling and made me feel so good to listen to (But not in the Sir Ian kind of way) and I never knew what to call it.

A lot of people seem to get it from sounds other than talking, which almost never do it for me by themselves. I prefer people who chat and have some sounds in there.

You already linked one of those people :p Cassie is great Head/Neck Massage Role-Play (Soft Spoken/ASMR) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOpfR-uXrdw&feature=g-like) I often listen to this before I go to bed. Not that it helps me wind my brain down any.
Sarah is also good ASMR - Salon & hair cut role play. I wash, brush, and cut your hair for you! - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvI2mDVUXmM&feature=g-like)
ASMRAurette is great Softly Spoken: Drawing your face - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po9B8o2TKiU&feature=g-like) Also holy crap look how cute that chick is
I don't get much ASMR joy from Violet but I like listening to her talking anyhow Hair Brushing and Relaxing Rambling - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3GAUUg0vaU&feature=relmfu)
And finally this girl is another adorkable one My Buffy Collection part 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRC-ipQI6Kk&feature=plcp) Only person with that accent I genuinely like to listen to.

Yeah I'm weird. :(

im not even joking any more you people really are freaks of smurfing nature. Listening to idiots talk about complete garbage quietly is something you get off on? HOW are you not wanting to kill the people speaking after 30 seconds and shout get a smurfing life as you rebound their craniums off a stone clad wall?

please be nice! love and rainbows and kisses ~Shorty

It's hard to say....I mean, if it fits the description, it's possible. But if it's a lone experience and you get the feeling from nothing else, than maybe a cat purring is just naturally relaxing to anyone.

I just did a quick YouTube search and it appears there are cat purring ASMR videos.

I've spent the past day researching this and I'm so surprised and elated by how common this is. I wonder how many people experience this without knowing what it is, or ever talking about it. The only person I have *ever* talked about it with is Del Murder and even that was vaguely. And I've been experiencing this since I was a toddler.

To clarify, this is not sexual in any way. At all.

The closest I can describe it is that it feels like a high. A relaxation high.

The biggest things that get me are things like hair cuts, massages, and makeovers. I go into a weird trance like state with what feels like relaxation bubbles cascading down from the scalp. I could literally sit for hours and hours in perfect bliss if someone was braiding my hair.

I always thought of it as kitten behavior. Because whenever anyone would brush my hair, I would literally feel like I could ball up in a patch of sunshine and feel like I was in heaven.

Soothing ambiant noises get me too. Especially ambiant sounds of cooking, or the sounds associated with painting.

I feel bad for people who haven't experienced this. It feels wonderful.

Are you even reading these posts? You must be seeing the word orgasm and fly into one of your Irish tizzy's. It's not sexual and it's not limited to hearing people speak softly.

I get chills when listening to music sometimes, but it doesn't really make me feel relaxed. I feel like getting up and kicking a door down or something. Assert my manliness by fighting hordes of orcs while that music blares in the background.
