View Full Version : Examples of reboots/new versions that pay homage to original/or old versions?

I'm going to go with "reboot" rather than "remake" as the latter would suggest that this version is the exact same script as the old version, except with different actors. Reboots have their own storyline, and even if the characters are the same as the classics, they are different characters (even if they have similar traits to the classic version's).

I'm not the kind of person who hates on reboots just because that's what they are (one of my favorite show's is one after all), but I especially love it, if the reboot contains allusions to the old version, as a kind of tribute to them. This can range from in your face examples such as re-using storylines or characters, to less obvious such as reusing lines, or basing something on something from the old version, to "you have to be a fanatic to get that", such as putting something in the background. This often happens if the creator of the new version was a fan of the old version. However, only two of the examples I have I know this to be a fact (it's certainly what I'd do if I made my own version of something).

So far I've seen;
1. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic contains several allusions to the old My Little Pony generations (more Generation 1 than the others).
2. I have seen one example for the newest version of Garfield that could be a homage to the old version (I don't watch the new version enough to be sure).
3. Baby Loony Tunes contained several allusions to the classic loony tunes (far more than The New Loony Tunes Show managed in a life time!)
4. Smallville contains several allusions to pretty much every previous version of Superman there has ever been.

Are there any other examples? Note: I am fully aware, that Smallville is the prequel to Superman. However it is still a reboot, as it is the writer's own version of how it happened, and the more you watch it the more you realize it is an alternative version (though for the most part, all characters still end up where they are supposed to be by the time Superman starts, even though some don't.) I am also aware that Baby Loony Tunes is a "when they were younger" show, but I'm still going to count it.

Examples 1 and 4 are the ones that were made by fans by the way.

Battlestar Galactica is a great example. You see throwbacks to the old Cylons and ship design throughout the series. It also includes one of the original cast starring as a recurring character.

The new Doctor Who has plenty of homages to the old show. It's not a reboot, though; it's a continuation, so that's pretty much expected.
