So, which did you pick and why?

I always take the esper. There's plenty of decent weapons in the game and my main party can get by just fine without Ragnarok/Illumina/Lightbringer. I'd rather give everyone Ultima and have the ability to Morph creatures.

Relm/Celes/Sabin/Terra WHAT.

Sword, because I can learn Ultima from the Paladin Shield.

I did not know that.... I had the shield equipped throughout the game though.

Getting the Paladin Shield on a cartridge copy really sucks.

I always choose magicite. I don't really have a use for either though since I barely ever use Ultima or weapons that drain MP. I'm an MP conservationist and the sword nor Ultima are MP friendly. :p

I always got the Magicite as I felt that it made more sense to try to collect all of the Espers rather than all of the weaponry in the game.

I always take the Sword when you can learn Ultima from the Paladin Shield. I don't need to aquire more items off the Magicite when you can steal/find most of them.

Esper most of the time, I like getting all the espers more and some of the items in the game are difficult to acquire without Metamorph. Though the GBA version allows me to cheat and get both.

I usually take the sword and learn Ultima from the Paladin Shield. I never found many useful items from Metamorph.

How can you get the sword and the magicite in the Gameboy Advance version of the game?

You can steal a Ragnarok and Ultima Weapon from the top of the tower before you fight Kefka and have the chance to save your game after the credits roll. I've got like, six of them.

SNES: Sword

GBA: Magicite

Pretty obvious, really.

What about the SF version?

We must cover all bases!

SF=Super Famicom? Probably the same as SNES, unless there are differences in inventory I've not heard of.

Only inventory difference is the Paladin Ring.

What's that do?!

I can't find any info on the FF wiki confirming the Paladin Ring exists in any version of FFVI. According to the Cursed Ring page it's a rumour.

It doesn't exist, but the Cursed Ring does and it's only available if you have the Ragnarok Magicite cause you have to Metamorph some enemies to do this.

The magicite. Partly for the sake of completeness as Roogle said, but mainly for Ultima! Never really bothered to use it in battle though.
