View Full Version : Synesthesia

I've stated many times on this forum that I have synesthesia. For those of you who aren't sure what synesthesia is: Synesthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia).

I was probably 12 or 13 when I first heard what synesthesia is. I remember thinking, "So what?" I literally thought everyone was like this. For me, personally, sounds and spoken words have colours and patterns, as well words I think. (When I read, I see the words in colour in my head, but I can distinguish the proper colour words are written in.)

Are there any other synesthetes on this forum? If so, what kind of synesthesia do you have? Do you enjoy it, or does it bother you?

I was going to make a joke about the language I use being quite colourful at times but figured that'd probably be in bad taste so instead I have opted to ramble and not make it instead.

So, no. I don't suffer from it - although synesthete sounds cool but if it makes your eyes burn as much as reading that post did for me than it's really not cool at all. :(

At the same time it's fascinating though.

I was about to say the exact same thing.

To answer your question, I don't have it, though I'm sure if I did I'd get used to it somehow. It would probably be very annoying at first, but like most things in life, I'd get used to seeing things in colours.

There wasn't every a "getting used to" phase. I've been like this since a child. Things have always had colour.

EDIT: Jowy, not that long, really.

I already told you this :colbert:

It's very minor. Certain combinations of words and colors produce a faint scent and I can sometimes see music as colors and shapes when I close my eyes. My sense of smell is horrid otherwise, though. And sometimes when I'm listening to music that I know is fundamentally sound (proper chord progressions, no clashing notes, etc.) or even things that I wrote myself, my brain tells me it doesn't sound right with ugly polygons and such :(

Only some people can do that? Can't anyone? It's easy to do voluntary, but I also get the double vision when an object is behind an object in one eye's view, but beside it in the other's.

I get the closed eye hallucinations as well, though I too thought they happened to everyone, likely as a result of the brain trying to interpret data that wasn't there. Fascinating. So you actually see each individual letter grouping, separated by spaces, as different colors? Nifty.

Ooh, what about punctuation?

I've always wished I had synesthesia. There are a couple of sounds I have found to make me physically feel something, but I think that mostly has to do with learned associations at this point. It's really only a couple of sounds that do it, and it is not really consistent enough to be synesthesia.

That being said, roughly a third of my friends have synesthesia for some weird reason. I have one friend that sounds create smell or taste for him (I can't remember which). I have another friend who sees shapes and colors when he tastes things. A good number of my friends see shapes and colors when they hear sounds; a couple of those people have developed perfect pitch because of it. A good number of my friends have the grapheme-color synesthesia where letters and numbers have specific colors (and genders and basic personalities actually...) I believe one friend has spatial sequence synesthesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia#Spatial_Sequence_Synesthesia). I have always found the topic fascinating.

Jinx

That's interesting you bring up the perfect pitch, thing. I'm not sure I have perfect pitch, but it has probably certainly helped.

Also, one advantage: I remember quite a bit of what I read. Because words have colours and patterns, it makes memorization extremely easy. I honestly attribute that to why I have never studied for anything, yet always get top marks.

Remembering what's been read has been a common thing most of my synesthete friends have told me about. I can relate to not having to study, but only because I've always been able to remember exactly where things were written on the page (either in text books or in my notes). I can generally reconstruct the my notebook or the text book in my head to help me "find" information. Not that anyone cares about that bit of information.

Edit: The perfect pitch thing was always a big help in chamber choir back in high school. We could get some of our friends to help write out some of the music we didn't actually have sheet music for at times.

The closed-eye hallucination thing is interesting. I never really knew the name of it. I feel that I tended to get to "level 4" on a nightly basis during a period of my childhood that I also got big into lucid dreaming and such. At least, I think what I experienced seems to match that. I know that I experience the "level 3" thing anytime all the lights are off in my room and my eyes are closed. I think it's kind of annoying really. You all have sucked me into the internet wormhole that is Wikipedia. I can't stop looking at random pages each page seems to link me to, haha.

Since I can remember I have thought of certain words with colours, but definitely not all the time. Generally, it begins with the starting letter that leads me on. For instance, when I would think of the name Gary, I would automatically think of the colour grey.

To be honest, I would more-so get visions in my head more than anything else. Say a word and I would think of a picture of something in my head that wouldn't directly have anything to do with said word. I dunno. :|

You can do me as well, Boobies. ;)

I do not have synesthesia. The only thing weird about my eyes is that I'll sometimes see spots as the result of eyestrain or headaches that interfere with my visual field enough to make reading/using a computer difficult. It's very annoying, but is fortunately fairly uncommon.

Lone Wolf Leonhart
01-04-2013, 04:03 AM
I don't have color synesthesia necessarily, in the sense that I don't see text as rainbow colored as the original post in this thread, but there are certain words, people, and places that I associate with specific colors. This is only because they're commonly paired together, though. I'm sure it's not uncommon to think of the color red right after you see the word apple.

However the following is something I experience:

In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be "farther away" than 1990), or may have a (three-dimensional) view of a year as a map (clockwise or counterclockwise).

Also, some words I read tend to "pop out" at me. Almost like a 3D effect, similar to how if you stare at a computer screen for a few hours the words look like they start to move. I'm not sure what it is. I'm sure it's related to my OCD somehow, where I tend to glare at specific words that look uncommon, misspelled, or heavily erased and rewritten.

There are a couple of sounds I have found to make me physically feel something.

Any chance it could be this?

What I'm talking about isn't that, but I have experienced that as well. What I'm talking about is just that when I hear people buzz their lips, my lips feel as if they are doing it to. I actually find that to be an extremely unpleasant feeling so I hate it when anyone does that. Choir in high school was miserable sometimes because we had to do that as a warm up. I would just cover my ears and refuse to do the warm up. Also the sound (and feel) of certain rough fabrics rubbing against each other cause my teeth to hurt. For some reason, it also creates a metallic taste in my mouth. I have no idea why though.

How strange - this is something I do as well! I always thought it was something that everyone did, though now that I think about it I'm not sure why.
