So lately I've been experimenting quite a lot with painting both analogue and digitally, and decided these pieces don't really belong in my long-running 'Fine Fineliner' thread. So here I'll be bringing you my colorful experiments, I hope you all enjoy them!

38954

In contrast, these pieces tend to be more atmospheric experiments rather than statements/emotions/ideas or heavy pieces compared to the fineliner pieces. Maybe I one day have the brush technique to put my thoughts/statements about the world in color as well as in black ink. Help me get there; feedback is very welcome!

Both of these are watercolor paintings, taking about 4-5 hours a piece to complete.

Wow awesome! I love the colours. Where did you get your inspiration? Seriously they are great.

Thank you all for the kind words!

As for inspiration, I always like landscapes that are not fouled/exploited/controlled by the hands of people, so wilderness is usually key. I also like to imagine how nature would 'correct our mistakes' should mankind wipe itself out. As for color palettes and technique I've been watching/analyzing quite a few studio Ghibli animated films (Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke are favorites because of their themes). The watercolored background art is absolutely stunning and I learn a lot about lighting and atmosphere just by taking a good look at them.

More pieces soon :greenie:

New stuff, new stuff!

39066

This first one is watercolor on canvas. Space out with me here: it's about floating fungi of the future that thrive on mankind and the pollution we leave behind. (Inspired by David Attenborough's bit about how certain fungi attack insect colonies that have grown too big and start to become a hazard to the environment, it's well worth your 3 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/<wbr>watch?v=XuKjBIBBAL8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuKjBIBBAL8))

39067

The second one is a digitally painted sketch I sort of did too late for the FF Ciddies. You may have already seen it in the FF Ciddies thread. It's more of a quick painting, but I like the color palette a lot.

Hope you enjoy, as always feedback is welcome.

New painting!

39418

This time I gave acrylic paint a try, and I definitely find it much harder to work with compared to watercolors. Acrylics feel so... earthy, while watercolors feel more sky-like. Anyway, after about 5-6 sessions of re-painting several parts (especially the knight) I'm finally content. I hope it shows, tell me what you think!

Pete for President

Here's a preview of a new digital painting I'm working on. This is only a slice, the final piece will be a garden about 4 times as wide as this bit. Superstoked on it though, I hope I can deliver the full thing with the same quality.

39582

Tell me what you think :greenie:

You're right about acrylics! I guess it is the consistency. Have you tried oils before? The paintings are looking lovely though, that last one is absolutely fucking beautiful, the colours are stunning. I look forward to seeing the rest of the picture!

Pete for President
01-24-2013, 09:55 AM
Thanks magicroundabout! I finished the painting yesterday but...

396813968239683

... I can't choose which background to use. It's a digital painting and I have sold a few copies of previous ones before. That is of course awesome, but now the thought of what people will think is messing with my head.

The first one is bright and cheerful. I like it, but it's also a bit cotton-candy-land-ish compared to my usual work. This is the background I have worked with for 90% of the actual painting process, however.

The second one has some more late afternoon vibe to it. The sky is less bright and that makes the painting a bit more balanced; the background steals less attention from the water and foliage up front.

The third one is where it's almost nighttime. I find this one the most balanced in terms of contrast between foreground and background. The darkness adds a little mystery (something I'm definitely into) in trade of the cheerfulness.

Maybe you guys can help me choose?

PS: Feel like I'm kinda showing a weak spot as the artist here, but asking for help is never wrong right? :erm:

I like the first one. The giant tentacled sunflowers coming out of the mist are ominous and a nice contrast. ^_^

First one too. You have a genuine gift my friend. Again, your use of colour is great.

I like the third actually. It's like some gaping void opened up in the sky and out popped eldritch sunflower abominations to consume the planet.

Rantz
01-26-2013, 10:31 PM
I'm also a fan of the third one. There's definitely more of a visual balance to it, and it's the most exciting one to look at. Stunning work as always!

Very nice paintings! I adore the contrasting of bright colors and black lines; they are make a beautiful scenery that I wished we have in this world. :D

Do you happen to have more paintings posted on this thread? :excited:

I personally loved the third one; there's a nice even balance of bright and darkness, a perfect amount of contrast that moves the viewer's eyes around nocticing the little details in the composition.

Pete for President
01-28-2013, 08:54 AM
Thanks you all for the kind words and advice! Glad to hear you all like different versions for different reasons. I decided to go and publish the first and brightest one, mostly because it stays true to the way the painting was intended - that one was the background for about 90% of painting process.

I took the time to make some crops to show some of the details.

Pete for President
02-23-2013, 10:06 AM
Thank you Faris!

I got around to finish two new watercolor paintings.

The first one is somewhat of a color experiment. I kinda like how it turned out, but I have some mixed feelings about it. I think it lacks a little meaning.

40917

This second one... took ages. I must have repainted the whole thing a dozen times. I had to change the concept halfway too.

At first I wanted to give the ship insect wings for sails to symbolize questioning whether mankind uses or abuses nature for it's own prosperity. But then the wings turned out horrible and I decided to get rid of that idea.

After some long hard thoughts I came up with a concept and title; 'This Pirate Ship Navigates by One Star Only'. Whoever gets the symbolism earns bonus points! :greenie:

4094440943

Despite some trouble along the road I really like the way this one turned out. It seems to have a bit more depth visually and a stronger concept too. What do you guys think?

I wanna buy one too! You should have a website of your own, and sell them.

One of my favorite artists does that. His works sell for as little as $1,000 and up to like $20k or so depending on if you buy it framed or not and how detailed it is.
He also sells copies made with archival ink on archival paper for around $100 or less and sometimes those Giclee prints or whatever they're called.

About that wallpaper, I think we can arrange that Pantz. I'll be in touch through PM.

The thought of doing FF scenes has crossed my mind, but I never really followed through. You do make it sound tempting Shorty, so I'll see if I can get around to it. Which scene? I think I'll keep that a secret :roll2 I don't own FFXIV, but X is actually one of my favourites. Who knows!

My inspiration? Whoop! BBC's Earth documentaries always give me loads of inspiration. Especially ones with crazy plants and animals. Music does a lot (Arcade Fire, Lost in the Trees), and it might sound crazy but the sun does too. Anything can look absolutely amazing with the right light shining on it.

Sooooo I decided to give oil painting a try. As a kid I used to watch Bob Ross' show (still do actually... guilty of watching full seasons :0) so I did some research on his technique and gave it a shot. Here are the first two results. The first one being pretty much entirely like Bob does, the second one being a little more experimental, especially in colour. I'm going to make some more today and see if I can develop this into something more personal flavoured. Any tips and advice on oil paint are very welcome!

Gosh.. I used to use oil paints when I took art lessons.. But that was many years ago.. I remember almost nothing of them other than using Linseed Oil and the other clear liquidy thing. lmao

Dude, those paintings are pretty amazing. I want to do some of that myself someday. I just need to get around to actually doing it. I did an oil painting back in high school during art class, and I believe I still have it with me. It used to be hung, but it's not. I think I need to fix that.

I got some Linseed Oil today noxious, it works way better to clean brushes mid-painting than the chemical spirit I was using before.

It's never too late Proto! As Bob Ross says; anyone can do it. Be sure to let me know when it happens ok? And do you have a picture of the old oil painting? I'm curious :greenie:

Here a new one I did today:

I like oil for it's bright colours, but man the mess is a hassle to clean up. Anyone got any tips for getting all of the colour out of a brush? The remains of old paintings can really mean a bad start for a new one

Nice! I like that one too, but I definitely think the first one blows it out of the water (ha) in terms of overall composition and aesthetics, whereas the second one seems more chaotic.

I'm trying to find a good way to articulate it. I feel like neither picture is very calming to look upon, but that fact works better for the first one. There's a lot of rough contrast and warning colours. The second one is eye-catching, but I wouldn't look at it for very long. I might with the first one, because there's a serene quality to it mixed in with the chaos and they strike a good balance.

I see what you mean and I feel the same way. The red picture definitely has more serenity to it. The second one, as soon as I put in the coloured clouds I thought: "This is what Bob Ross meant by, be careful, otherwise you end up with giant cotton balls in the sky". Not too bothered that it's not calming to look at, as with my digital work I often have explosions of colours and things happening. I guess that's a taste thing.

Personally I like the above art work before the filter. The sky seems to have more contrast and stand out more - although the other than the sky the rest of the piece definitely looks more realistic with the filter. Such a tough choice! :3

Thanks so much! I do have a deviantart account; http://pietzooter.deviantart.com/

I used to study graphic design so back then I used photoshop quite a bit albeit more technical and rarely with the brush function. The learning curve is pretty steep indeed but manageable nonetheless. I think one of the greatest advantages as well as disadvantages is the undo function. For one it makes it very forgiving to make mistakes, but at the same time it makes it really hard to be content with a piece. Overall, I'd say just try to make as many pieces as possible even if they're quick 'n dirty. You'll learn faster that way instead of trying to make one very detailed piece you get stuck on and stops being fun.

Here's a new piece, made a timelapse of it too:

You're the Michiru Kaioh of EoFF. These are the kind of paintings I would expect to see in art exhibits.

Thanks everyone! Unfortunately I had to leave my oil painting gear behind in favour of some more travels, but I made a new digital piece instead.

I'm content with how the trees turned out and in case you're wondering the big red things like sea anemones on land, light enough to be swayed by the wind.

Pete, your paintings are like a dream. If I was to ever write a fantasy novel, I'd probably be using your paintings as muse for locations.

This painting is really awesome because I want to see what's in that rock hole! Why is it glittering? What is there?

Have you ever considered doing a series of paintings?

I have considered themed series, but for some reason I can't really stomp out paintings too often and I kind of forgot or just want to try something else. Maybe one day : )

Haven't posted in a while, but I just finished a new digital piece. It took forever.

My first thought was that you posted a scene from some gorgeous game and joked about being productive. My second thought was that I would play the crap out of a game you did art for.

Actually, no need to defend. It's kind of a no-contest.

I like this latest one, but it's not my favorite. There's something about the contrast that feels a little less engaging than some of the others. Not really a critique, I'm just trying to keep your head from exploding, buddy. :)

New piece. Still no internet at home, which means I'm still productive. Tried a rainy scene for the first time using this tutorial (http://www.deviantart.com/art/Water-Tutorial-279128000). Good times!

Yeah I tried something a little darker this time around! Maybe I should have put a willow in there :p

I want to play a game in that setting. I really do.

It's kinda inspired by the cursed areas of Okami and the swampy dark area of Ni No Kuni :shifty:

Also, I love that the tree in the second picture is punching up through the snow in the first picture.

New oil painting! I'm really really happy with this one. So far most of my oil works have been in very familiar Bob Ross style, but for the first time this one feels like it's sorta my own. It came out exactly how I had it in mind and that's rare too. I think focussing on one thing and make that look good could work better for me than trying to fill the entire canvas with different stuff. Anywho, it feels kinda like a breakthrough.

Hope you like it too, feedback is welcome :D
