DISCLAIMER: THIS GAME IS BETTER THAN SKYRIM OR OBLIVION AND IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT OBLIVION GO MAKE AN OBLIVION THREAD

Okay now that I've got that out of the way :)

Here's my character from my current playthough, he looks ridiculous and it's great:

39125

That Robe of the Hortator

That Bound everything (the Bound shield is visible there)

That stupid Dreugh helmet

I have a Golden Saint soul sitting around in my inventory and once I have enough money I'm going to enchant the Daedric Tower Shield I have lying around and it's going to be so overpowered and ridiculous.

Let us talk about Morrowind, my friends.

Just started, really. I have entered Balmora, but not done anything. I'm in full Dark Brotherhood gear, with a starry Expensive Skirt. Sounds poncy, but it looks pretty cool. :p

I'm a Breton under the Atronach sign, because fuck yeah magicka, and I'm desperately trying to grind a little to get my Endurance and Agility up. I've had no luck running into enemies I can actually take on, however, so I'm still at level 1. I made a custom class but I can't remember the skills I chose. It's called "Sage Warrior", though, and I made an entire backstory regarding their history and eventual decline at the hands of a united Tamrielic army. :)

This game is sodding excellent, and I am extremely happy to be playing a very customisable game that doesn't drag me around by the nose. I really like the journal; it's written out as a journal would be, day by day, and it adds a surprising degree of immersion and realism to the game. I don't have a quest log that clearly marks each individual quest, I just have the notes that I made at the time as information made itself available. :)

My laptop still chugs away a bit, but the game runs at a playable framerate, so I'm happy. Haven't gone on a silt strider yet!

Alright Pike. I'll match you with a screenshot of my latest playthrough. STOCK VANILLA MORROWIND ALL DAY!

http://i45.:bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou::bou:/2m7srkp.jpg

Yes, he's a Dunmer, like 99% of my characters.

I prefer the Redas Robe of Deeds for that constant 50 point feather.

Dropping mofos with the crescent blade and laughing at them while they're paralyzed watching me slash away and tear their limbs up.

That Curiass of The Savior's Hide/Boots of Blinding Speed for convenience.

Fists of Randagulf for strength and agility

Funny though...the visible pieces of armor are just plain dwemer and imperial silver. I just like the endurance modifier for leveling up, and having a high heavy armor stat never hurts later on.

I haven't had the time to REALLY make him overpowered and broken. Everytime I get to the part where I have to unite the Great Houses and Ashlander Tribes, I stop playing for a while, lol. Currently on my way to the Zainab camp.

The Morrowind Overhaul art direction is beautiful, as is Morrowind vanilla. The story is also the best story in videogames. I'm playing Oblivion right now and I just wanna go back to Morrowind :( (and I will in a few minutes)

I guess he expects mod makers to be able to perform bigger miracles on a ten year old game with a troutty engine? Looks pretty good considering Bethesda aren't very good at things like coding or making their game look good to begin with. Certainly better than vanilla Morrowind.

And Pike, every time I see you playing Morrowind I realize how much I want the game to have some sort of co-op mode so we can quest together.

Okay I'll make an effortpost about mods for y'all, because despite the brilliance of vanilla Morrowind it's even more mindblowingly amazing with mods installed.

Essentials
Morrowind Overhaul (http://www.ornitocopter.net/morrowind-overhaul/): As Pike says this includes a bunch of different mods. This is mostly a graphics and sound pack with some unofficial patching but it makes an unbelievable difference and unless your computer can't handle it, you need it.

Galsiah's Character Development (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=2030): GCD single-handedly fixes all problems with vanilla leveling. It makes everything so much more natural and smooth, lets you go above 100 in stats and skills (not without work!), and in the 50~ hours of playing with it since I reinstalled it's seemed to be pretty much perfectly balanced in most regards. Playing without this is an indicator of the most depraved masochism. Note: There's another leveling mod our there known as MADD Leveling which has pretty good reviews, but I've never used it myself. Consider that if you don't like GCD. But for Vivec's sake get one or the other.

Morrowind Patch Project (http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html) (Formerly known as Unofficial Morrowind Patch): A project which has persisted in one form or another pretty much since release and which aims to fix anything it can, from typos to incomplete quests to actual game-breakers.

Morrowind Code Patch (http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/mods/19510): Going deeper than the above this, unsurprisingly, touches the game's code itself to make even more repairs and improvements. Fixes a huge number of issues which were in the base game and remained through patches and expansions. Some things are vital like crash fixes, some are quality of life, but this thing is indispensable.

Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attack (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=2487): Exactly what it says on the tin. In base, with Tribunal installed, you'll get attacked when you're a prisoner fresh off the boat in Seyda Neen by elite assassins. Not only does this unbalance things when you kill them because their gear is great and valuable, but it also makes very little sense that the person sending the assassins would even know you exist, let alone care. So with this you're safe from the DB until you've reached a position of power in various guilds or have progressed to a certain point in the Main Quest.

Expansion Integration (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8793): Bethesda were lazy smurfers with Bloodmoon and especially Tribunal, and this mod goes a long way to helping that. Basically it brings everything appropriate from those expansions into Vvardenfell, so you can encounter Durzogs in the wild and alchemy ingredients can show up for sale and so forth.

That's pretty much it for what I would class as essentials, and even the last one of this short list is debatable. Everything else is really up to the player in question, but I'll link to a few of my favorites and then a couple of the bigger lists and important sites.

MILF's favorites
Tamriel Rebuilt (http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/): I strongly considered putting this in the essentials section because it's just that good. TR is a project that has been running since the early days of Morrowind with the original aim of recreating all of Tamriel. They've since scaled back this absurd ambition to 'just' the whole of the Morrowind province, which is still only slightly smaller than Vivec's Spear. They've recently released part 3 of this vast effort and already the game is literally twice the size.

http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Automilf/TamrielRebuiltWorldMap_zpsdbfc8b1b.jpg

Those of you who've played the game will realize just how vast an expansion this project is. And although I've only seen a very little bit of it so far I can assure you what is there is great. Firewatch is a better-made settlement than any Imperial one in the native game. (Note: The small island south-west of Vivec/Ebonheart is not a part of TR, but a seperate mod named Dulsya Isle.)

Piratelord's Creatures XI (http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/mods/30563): There have been a great number of creature adding mods over the years but this is the best one currently. Everything added is well-made and fits perfectly with the theme of Morrowind and the aesthetics and stuff.

Executor Zurg's Merchant Money Mod (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=531): Some people may dislike this. Those people are wrong. This mod increases the amount of money carried by merchants (not those added by mods though) tenfold. Very simple, and incredibly welcome, because you don't have to go smurfing off to Caldera or the Mudcrab Merchant to sell anything worth more than five septims anymore. Don't worry, when you start getting more expensive gear you'll still struggle to find places to sell them.

abot's gondoliers (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9153), boats (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9371), and silt striders (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9122): This triune of mods by abot does something that some of us have longed for for years. It adds the ability to choose a 'scenic travel' option from various ports, which means you can actually ride the stuff as it takes you to your destination in real-time! It also adds some ambient stuff like gondoliers paddling around Vivec City and stuff. It's tremendously good for gigantic nerds like Shorty and Locky who just looove to act as if they're really in the game and write up huge backstories for their characters and stuff!

Traders 300 (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2528): Adds a locked chest to most merchants, within which will be a leveled list of appropriate goods. The end result is that merchants will be far more variable in what they carry, giving a lot of flavor and life to them and encouraging you to check back with them now and then.

Homes to Let (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=3408): This is a really nice little addition that does, well, exactly what it says. You can now rent homes on a monthly basis. Excellent alternative to most of the housing mods out there, as this lets you rent something in, say, Hla Oad for all of 60 septims a month. Superb for anyone who can't afford other houses or who hasn't progressed enough to gain them, or who fancies a change of pace, or who just wants more housing options.

The Less Generic NPC Project (http://lgnpc.org/): A huge undertaking which seeks to give unique dialog for most topics to every single NPC in the game. So far they're up to about 1/3 of the game, which is pretty damned impressive, and most of what I've seen so far has been decently written and kept to lore and stuff. It tends to add some minor quests as well, but the general overall effect is to make the world a much richer place. I happened to rent a place in Vivec with the above mod and it was next to a store; I went into the store and the Khajiit in there was affected by this mod, so we sat and talked forever. They worked together superbly to create a great little experience for my character!

Service Requirements (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=4548): This mod is for masochists. What it does is when you try to trade with a faction-aligned person, they'll tell you to smurf off if you're not a member of their guild/house/etc. Want to port to Sadrith Mora? Best be a member of the Mage's Guild! You can also pay surchages to access their services. Altogether a pretty stupid mod that only makes the game harder, I couldn't play without it.

Further Reading

Now, this game's over ten years old now and still has active modders. Unsurprisingly there are an immense number of mods out there, and my little list of mostly personal taste doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. If you're interested in looking more into what is out there, here's some resources to do just that!

There are two main download sites these days. There used to be many, many more but most have fallen off the Internet.

Planet Elder Scrolls (http://planetelderscrolls.ign.com/) has a huge repository of mods. Problem is some of them were on off-site hosting, and said off-site hosting has now disappeared. Still one of the most valuable resources for getting mods though, and if you check the comments on a missing mod you'll often find someone pointing folks to a new upload someplace.

Morrowind Modding History (http://mw.modhistory.com/home) is a place which is trying to salvage and preserve pretty much every Morrowind mod it can get a hold of. If you can't find something on PES it'll almost certainly be here. Also great to just browse through and see what's on offer.

Aside from those there are various lists out there which... list different mods, usually grouped into categories like "New buildings" and so on. Like anything these lists will be based on the personal taste of their authors but you can usually find some pointers towards stuff you're after. Great House Fliggerty (http://www.fliggerty.com/phpBB3/custom_page.php?page=26) is a good resource anyway and this thread has a list of lists (of lists, in a couple cases). Well worth checking out are Telesphoros' List (http://www.mwmythicmods.com/telesphoros.htm), Empirical Morrowind (http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm), and BTB's list (http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html). Also try the TESNexus Wiki (http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Recommended_mods_Morrowind).

A couple of closing notes! There's a very widely-used mod named "Necessities of Morrowind" out there, which adds the need to eat, drink, and sleep into the game. I've not yet tried it myself though I plan to with my next character. There are also a couple of mods which add NPCs walking around settlements. A lot of people swear by Morrowind Comes Alive but I prefer Starfire's NPC additions; it really does help add life to towns to see people wandering around and having different people when you leave and return and stuff.

Okay I hope that helps anyone looking for mods get an idea of some of the most important ones currently around and points them to where to look for more! If you've got questions go ahead and ask, I'll probably know the answer or where to find it! :jess:

Steve your best bet for that is probably Realistic Weather (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2589). I don't think an actual proper atmospheric model is possible given the way the game works; the best you can really get is changing probabilities so they feel more fitting.

It does, but it still bears mentioning in case you are a demented person who doesn't install MO.

It's better to start a new character but GCD can handle existing characters, I think you just need to do a bit of console command fuckery if things don't go quite right.

A question for you guys:

What class do you like to pick? Do you go with a preset class or do you prefer to create your own?

If you make your own, what do you call it, and what skills does it have?

Tell me

Pike
01-12-2013, 04:37 PM
I make my own class :) The skills I use the most go into Major/Minor for quick n' painless leveling. If you're going with a warrior type class you want something like Long Blade, Block, Heavy Armor... typical warrior stuff.

Acrobatics is nice as a minor because you can level it from jumping up and down a bunch of stairs for a few minutes. Likewise with Athletics because you just need to run/swim to increase it.

I am also fond of Speechcraft/Mercantile because you do a lot of trading anyway.

Madame Adequate
01-12-2013, 05:53 PM
I always make my own class. Always. My current one is a warrior with a taste of mage, which is my usual policy - a hybrid class but with a heavy bias towards one side or another. Resto is a Major and Mysticism a Minor. The class name incidentally is "Milkdrinker".

Because I always use Galsiah's it changes the equation somewhat. Your potential stats are influenced by your starting skills, so it actually makes sense if you want to be a warrior to have more than one weapon and/or armor skill for instance. I'm not sure whether I'm going to make my next character a pure mage and go Maximum Telvanni, or a monk type with H2H, Unarmored, Acrobatics, and Athletics all as Majors.

Double-post? Well you scribs stopped posting so I have no choice!

Last night I finished Morrowind. Disgustingly enough it's the first time I've done so, ever.

This was the mer who did it:

http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Automilf/NevosNerevar_zpsb7e7f5a8.jpg

Proclaimed Nerevarine by the Ashlander tribes known as the Urshilaku, the Ahemmasu, the Zainab, the Erabinimsun, and the Kaushtabibi; Hortator of House Redoran, House Hlaalu, and House Telvanni; Patriarch and Archcanon of the Temple; Lawman of House Redoran; Defender of the Fighter's Guild; a modest rank I have forgotten in the Arena Blue Team; and possessor of a great number of artifacts of power and holy relics, such as Sunder, Keening, Wraithguard, Veloth's Judgement, Ebony Mail, the Cleaver of St. Felms, the Crosier of St. Llothis, and items he made both famous and coveted in the course of his own quests:

http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Automilf/Nevosrelics_zps998fdb72.jpg

With the fall of Dagoth Ur what became of Nevos is unknown. He was seen in the City of Vivec, reporting the news to Lord Vivec, and credible sightings place him travelling north through Balmora and Ald'Rhun after that but then all certainty is lost. Some say he sought to slay all divine powers, from Vivec to Azura (and Vivec's own disappearance lends weight to this in the eyes of some). Some say he lives among the Ashlanders as a humble hunter or tracker. Some say he set off to explore Tamriel's other provinces, whilst others claim he departed for the distant land of Akavir. Some think he simply set off to find an enemy which might still challenge him - and found one. Regardless of the truth in the years which followed the defeat of Dagoth Ur, the absence of the Nerevarine has been decried by some Dunmer as abandoning them in her greatest hour of need. A new legend of his return and/or second reincarnation has sprung up, and all Dunmer hope he will one day return to aid them in undoing the damage of the Red Year and reclaiming the Promised Land - Morrowind.

Yeah, I would argue that some of the mods are near-essential. Granted, I would never say that vanilla Morrowind isn't playable, as it most certainly still is, but there are definitely one or two mods that I just wouldn't want to live without.

Of course, I want the Xbox version anyway because I want to add it to my collection.

I tried running the Overhaul, but I had a lot of problems with it. I'm going to mod it piecemeal instead since that's what I did with Oblivion and I know what I want from this game. In the meantime, I'm playing it vanilla on a family computer and have mostly grown past its clunkiness.
