I seriously love this game. I bought Mass Effect 2 on a whim and it's like the best game I've played on my PS3.

I just want to talk about it! I have a sexy female Shepard, and I'm currently trying to woo Garrus because human/turian affairs ftw man. She's also a paragon, but sometimes she's a renegade and takes no trout. She is awesome.

My party is usually Garrus and Kasumi but I used Jack and Grunt for the first time and.... not a bad team! I also like mining planets and throwing probes right in there.

Ooh hell yeah Mass Effect.

Tell me about your Shepard.

My Shepard is an Infiltrator. A stealthy lady with a Sniper Rifle. Few enemies see her coming, and fewer live to talk about her afterward.

She's also a Paragon, who fights for the good of others and avoids conflict when she can. Being an excellent diplomat, however, she also knows when to be tough and unforgiving (such as when dealing with Krogan). She's a nice character, but not a soft one.

She's also been romantically involved with Liara since their first adventure together. Intelligent, kind, but with the same fiery passion that Shepard has.

My advice to you: Purchase and play all the DLCs, especially when you get to Mass Effect 3, and do so before you finish the game.

Shepard is a dick. No matter how many paragon points he has, he will always be a colossal dick. xD

I went with the first choices for everything because I was too lazy to actually customise.

Ouch!

Synergist? Do you mean adept? Or maybe sentinel?

My renegade Shep is a soldier. My paragon Shep is an inflitrator. I still need to beat ME3 with my paragon.

Oh. My goodness, I love this game. I started playing the first mass effect, I want to say around, a week and a half ago at this point and I started Mass Effect 2 on Monday. I was (and still am) a little put off by the fact that I have to go searching for ammo every fire fight rather than just having to let my weapon recharge. The lack of weapon/armour customization (barring mix matching stuff) is also a boner killer. The rest of the game though, is damn fantastic. I just found Wrex and DEM FEELS. D: I wish I could take him back.

My male Shep' is a Paragon Soldier with a mean streak. I usually use Grunt and the Assassin who, if I had a fem' Shep', I'd totally romance.

Paragon Shepard resists the call of Miranda Lawson's ass since he's in a hot monogamous relationship with Liara T'Soni. Soldier seemed like the best starting class in ME1 so I just rolled my character over for all three games. Garrus never left my party because he's a total bro for life. Other partner was usually Mordin Solus or Legion...you get Legion too damn late in the game though. I had fun with the loyalty missions in ME2; Thane's was probably the best of the bunch.

Also TO AVOID SPOILERS! Later on in the game you'll be given the chance to select one of three weapons. The Sniper Rifle's the strongest of the three. Highly recommended you pick that one over the shotgun and assault rifle.

Actually, you only get the advanced weapons for weapon types you can already use, and Lock's Sentinel can't use Sniper Rifles. Instead, she can learn to use a weapon class that she normally couldn't, or grab one of the advanced weapons for a weapon class she can.

My Shepard is an infiltrator. She saved Ashley because I had to save the person who shared my name. She's a stout Paragon that never went the path of the Renegade.

That's about all I can say without spoiling anything!

My ME2 Shephard was a Paragon Sentinel who romanced Jack (mostly by accident). I wished I could romance Katsumi because she was my favorite character.

I'm currently playing ME3 right now. My ME3 Shephard is a is about a 60/40 mix between Paragon and Renegade (the war is making him tougher). This time I went with Adept because my favorite thing to do as Sentinel was use biotics. Singularity + Warp/Throw = Goodnight. I decided to break it off with Jack and pursue either Liara or Ashley.

ME1 wasn't available on PS3 for some time but now that it is I might go back and play it over from the beginning as a truly bad ass Renegade Shephard. I'd also like to play Infiltrator and Vanguard.

RenShep, especially in ME1, just swings way too wildly from position to position. ParaShep has a theme, a focus. But with RenShep, you get tons of contradictory positions. RenShep's only goal is to piss people off.

In ME2 and especially ME3, they did a much better job of making RenShep a more concrete and focused character. It's more what Renegade was advertised as in the beginning, the cruelty of doing a hard job, the cold equations. I mean, RenShep's still a jerk, but it just feels like their's an actual character there in the later entries.

Look at all these paragon apologists.

It's a video game full of asshole aliens. You have to show them who is the boss by being the dick that smurfs those assholes. Renegade first time through or you're a coward who doesn't deserve to play video games. :colbert:

Played as an Adept. It's not bad but if I did shit again I'd probably do Vanguard.

You'll need a maxed out paragon/renegade score to settle a "conflict" of sorts near the end of the game. It'll affect your total war assets if you can't make everyone happy.

Night Fury

So I had a good play on it last night and I picked up Samara the Justicar and I'm playing through the Liara loyalty mission.

I hate it when you get bonuses by being pure asshole or pure saint as it forces you to follow a path rather than take the action you'd pick in each individual situation. Props to Fallout for making Neutral an actual thing.

I thought ME3 doesn't do that because it uses a Reputation system rather than separate Paragon/Renegade systems?

This is correct. Rep is far more important in ME3 than Par/Ren. Rep determines which answers you can pick, not Par/Ren score. My full Paragon can still make endgame Ren decisions.

It's ME2 that shafted you that way.

I read up a little bit about what I needed to do to get the 'good' endings, and it looks like you don't need to be 100% Paragon or Renegade to get the right options at the end. But you did need to use the Charm or Intimidate options each time you talk to the Illusive Man, which I don't think I've done. Oh well. Can always go for that next time, when I get the ME trilogy.

I also read that to get those readiness scores up above 50% you have to play multiplayer, and that those scores determine how good an ending you get. That sucks because I had no interest in the multiplayer part of this game and I'm probably pretty bad at it.

Hm, my mistake. I figured it was paragon/renegade as I don't recall having the option to go down the renegade path during the Quarian/Geth event. Multiplayer is pretty fun, Del. Essentially just horde mode from Gears of War. Just set the difficulty to Bronze and you'll only need to win a handful of matches to get your readiness high enough.

Not quite, Del.

Due to the flak they got about the required Multiplayer (including the Better Business Bureau agreeing there was false advertising for the game when BioWare had specifically stated that they wouldn't require players to play multiplayer to get the best endings), they patched the ending requirements.

First, the Extended Cut free DLC drops the requirements so that the assets you collect across a multi game save should be enough to get the best ending (I think it was the DLC, it might have just been a patch though), and then the other DLCs add in even more War Assets to make it easier (and you should play Leviathan at least, it makes the ending much more tolerable).

Also, about your interactions with the Charm/Intimidate... You don't actually have to do that to get the best ending. You need to do that to get an extra scene before the ending, however, and it does mean that you need more War Assets to get the best ending. Essentially, it's a way to drop the required War Assets for the best ending by a few hundred points.

Del Murder

Ok, thanks! I like to collect the war assets and do plan on playing the DLC scenarios so it shouldn't be a problem for me.

Del the multiplayer is a lot of fun. I was going to avoid it as I thought I'd be terrible at it, and I was at first xD I was hugely taken back by just how fun the multiplayer is. If you've done any of the N7 missions those are the standard multiplayer maps and on Bronze difficulty you won't have too much of an issue even if you're absolutely terrible. If you've got Voice Comms turned off multiplayer is just essentially single player anyway except the other 3 characters are being controlled by people and you have no idea if they're yelling "you suck" or not - though in all honestly I hardly ever hear people say anything let alone actually insult anyone. Give it a shot, you might be as surprised as I was.

It's great to play with people you know so you can actually yell at them and it not be weird. Like while yelling at steve is much like yelling at a 13 yr old from a basement who is screaming profanities, it's just a bit more satisfying to do so when it's him.

I really enjoyed exploring planets in the Mako, and customising weapons and armour. Great fun, and greatly mourned in the other games. I found ME3 really boring and poorly made, and I actually struggled to get through it. Damn shame, that game. :(

First time I played the first one, I went with the Commando. I didn't enjoy it, so got rid of the game pretty quickly. Months and months later, I bought it again after forgetting about my first time round, instead opting for an Adept. Low and behold, I was able to use assault rifles with him! Best. Thing. Ever. I went for a Barrier specialisation, which was so much fun. Infinite Barrier, plus being able to attack things in Statis = awesome, especially when combined with an infinite range, permanently cool assault rifle. :smug:

My Shep was the standard male one, because the customisation options made you look bloody awful! As for my team, I went with Bruce Campbell and Garrus in the first game, with Garrus and Miranda in the second. Essentially, one Tank, plus Garrus. There must always be space for Garrus. Always.

ME: Ashley & Wrex (and sometimes Garrus)
ME2: Grunt & Miranda (and sometimes Garrus/Jacob)

Basically I'm all about the soldiers for the most part.

I prefer frontliners that can take a lot of hits. When I used Garrus I would get tired of him getting himself killed. I'm rather aggressive in most of my FPS games, and I like my team to act similarly. I also like having the love interest in my main party, so Miranda/Ashley got those roles.

If Garrus was a Soldier class, I'd probably have used him more often.

Very glad this thread exists cause I just finished ME1 last night and downloaded ME2.

My Shep was basically a mobster in space. I ran with the biotics class cause shotguns are MANLY. I extorted anyone I could for funds to properly and made sure to pave way for a new galaxy where Humans were in control in order to gain as much influence as possible.

The game was really fast I felt but mainly cause I didn't have the patience to drive the Mako around every planet in the galaxy just to get a few new guns.

My main crew was Wrex and Tali. I played on Veteran difficulty so having Wrex and his immunity ability was perfect getting a few extra seconds of a meatshield during awkward situations. Tali handled Decryptions, Hacking, Electronics and First Aid, and also knew how to wield a shotgun meaning maximum awesome outputed. Me and Wrex would go biotic ape shit while Tali just squatted in corners firing her shotgun from 50m distances...

GOOD GAME. LOOKING FORWARD TO ME2.

Been playing through ME1 as part of the Trilogy pack on PS3 and so far, I really like the game. I probably spend too much time dicking around than playing the story but oh well... I'm mostly going renegade, though I don't play up the "humanity is #1!" cause a true manipulative bastard is freinds to no one but themselves.

So Male Shep with his default look cause its easy on the eyes and games with character creation generators usually don't work out well for me, I am still not sure which was worse, my down syndrome spartan in Demon's Souls (I seriously regret selling the helmet that covers his face...) or the fact I subconsciously created Keanu Reeves (Bram Stoker Dracula look) in White Knight Chronicles. So yeah no messing with faces this time around...

I am a Soldier class cause Shep just seems like that's how he would roll, though if the sequels gave me a chance to re-roll my job, I might take one of the Mage type classes cause not having Tech skills really limits my party options.

I like most of the cast so far, even if Liara is a bit odd and far more forward than I thought she would be. Wrex is probably my personal favorite because he talks and acts like an adult version of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.

Shep: Come on, I'm sure you've got some interesting stories.
Wrex: Well there was the one time my race fought the Taurians and they used a bio weapon that is now going to make my species extinct...
Shep: I should go now...

Tiara gets the most love of my party, partly because I really like her but mainly because her high Tech skills makes treasure hunting much easier. Sadly Wrex and Bruce Campbell get the least field time since they are pure fighters in a game where 90% of all treasure has a password code to be opened, and I was raised in an era where you need to grab every single coin, ring, and shiny treasure you see on the screen even if its not exactly the smartest move...

IIRC in the later games you can change Shepard's class if you want to. However I ran Soldier on my male Shepard and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly in ME2 where the wide variety of weaponry available made it stupidly fun to play, and also in 2 and 3 Shepard gets the ability to eventually pick one of his team mates skills and use it himself even if he's not a biotic or whatever. Soldier Shep + Domination = oh yes.

Del Murder

I think Soldier appeals to those who are more used to traditional shooters.

You can change Shepard's class and even his/her look in each game. I went with Sentinel in ME2 and I really liked the combination of tech and biotic powers. It makes you a real jack of all trades and allows you to pick your squad mates pretty freely. I really liked blowing things up so I went full biotic and picked Adept in ME3. It's fun to clear entire rooms without firing a shot. :D

"Yeah cause she totes said you did" So I go talk to her and she confesses her love for me. I'm all "BITCH I JUST MET YOU. CREEPER" She comes off far too strong in the first game. Liara is the easiest romance in ME1 as a consequence of you having the option to obtain her relatively late in the plot. As such, the progression to romance is shorter.

Yes, but the quest to get her unlocks with two other story missions, I am curious that after those three missions, does the game unlock the last set of missions? Ignore all the side missions you can do in between all this. I'm just trying to gauge how many "main story missions" there are.

Okay, time to retract my earlier statement, it turns out you can import data from the first game but it helps if you actually download the updates and patches for ME2 first. I read up online that I need to get my Paragon level higher, I think it's at about 80% though! Oh well, just gotta be nicer then I can woo old Miranda back.

Oh Auly, I'm scared. I don't want all my lovely peeps to die in the big battle! :(

Goddamnit! Just did the suicide mission and it was only Miranda who died! Will have to do it again and make sure she doesn't so I can get that lovely trophy. But still! Urgh! Miranda :(

I ended up with Zaeed and the black dude dying. I wasn't really affected by their deaths to be honest. I was more worried about losing Jack, Mordin, Thane and Garrus. I didn't put them any where near pain. Except for Jack. She was my biotic shield. xD

Night Fury

I used Samara as my Shield and sent Legion through the tunnels, then took Legion and Miranda to the fight at the heart of the base. If I play this mission again I'll leave Miranda in the bunker and take someone else. Maybe she'll survive then.

Miranda dying seems like a pretty sweet ending to me!

I was afraid of having Samara dying so I didn't use her. I didn't realize it'd be super easy for Tali or Legion to make it through the tunnels, so I chose Jacob just in case he did die. xD

Skyblade
02-21-2013, 02:32 PM
Most of the choices are fairly obvious. Tali and Legion are the tech experts, they do well in the tunnels. Jack and Samara are the biotic masters, they do well in the shield role.

Team leadership also has a few choices, but they aren't as obvious. Most of your team are loners, so they don't handle groups well. So choose someone with experience leading a team (Miranda led Lazarus, Garrus led his squad on Omega, Tali led a team on Haestrom, wait, Tali doesn't work. Um, Jacob hasn't led anything in his life, but works anyway).

And don't bring anyone who's not loyal with you on the final battle. Things will go bad.

Oh, and if you send someone back with the crew, send Mordin, he's the most likely to die while you're killing the boss.

I used Kasumi as my expert, which I didn't really like as I do like using her in battle - in fact she was my most consistent team mate throughout the game. I love her shadow strike. I later used Legion, even though I got him soooo late in the game, I'd like to have had him for more of the big missions.

I will have another attempt at this tonight and let you all know how it goes. It's looking like I'll do this;

Legion in tunnels
Garrus as team leader
Samara as biotic shield
Kasumi as escort
Thane and Legion in last battle

There's not really anything majorly spoilery! Anyone can die and anyone can live.

Also, I just replayed the last mission and we all survived! SCORE!

I don't know what WK's problem is but I was able to take my Shepard from ME1 all the way to ME3.

I wasn't...from ME2 to ME3 I had to do a complete facial restructure as the one from the first two wouldn't properly import. Made a new one from scratch. :aimmad:

This was due to an initial bug on launch which has been patched since then.

I didn't know any of that, and I've got people telling me how to keep everyone alive now... I haven't even recruited everyone yet and I now been told I will have a scenario where I can lose everyone. That's not a spoiler how?

Well, aside from the telling you how to keep everyone alive there's not too much being spoiled. Browsing through the achievements/trophies of the game tell you that you're going to end up having to save some people.

Here's a tip for you,WK, just do everyone's loyalty missions before you go through on the end thing that you'll not know til you play xD Just talk to everyone and do their mission and you'll be okay :D

It was the main draw of the game's marketing campaign before launch and is stated flatly in the first couple hours of gameplay (and multiple times thereafter). Mass Effect 2 is a about your crew going on a suicide mission. Anyone can die. Even Shepard (in which case you can still "beat" the game, but will not be able to import that data to ME3). It's not just being dramatic when the characters talk about the chance for failure.

Wolf Kanno
02-22-2013, 01:09 AM
Seeing how I've ignored all info about Mass Effect up until now since I couldn't play the whole thing, my statement still stands. Not to mention that in a genre known for fake outs, its hard to take "suicide mission" as being serious. My real beef here is that I'm literally seeing unmarked spoilers about completing the mission.

Well, in fairness, the premise of saving/dooming people was the subject of their entire advertising campaign back before ME2 came out...

I had no interest in the next gen systems at the time the game was released and until I care, it don't exist to me and I don't actively seek out info at all, this thought process extends to anything in my world view. :p

Though to be fair, my issue was less about the heads up that shit was going to hit the fan and more about the "let me tell you the solution to the problem". I'm not completely bothered by spoilers unless its stuff that sucks the fun out of the game and getting the heads up on how to solve a puzzle bugs me, especially one that has story significance.

Okay. So I completely lost my shit at ME3 last night.

I was at the Grissom Academy and yyeeeeey Jack! She got way hot too. WAY HOT. And like, all these hard as fuck battles kept happening, and I'm like what the fuck is going on - yeah there should be some difficult combat but this is ridiculous. I went to the difficulty setting and it was auto-set to the hard setting! I don't mind the fighting bits, but it's annoying when it's just relentless and I'm pressing the "GET IN COVER" button and she just doesn't and gets shot or some shit. So I'm trying it on easy, and if that's still annoying, I'll be switching to narrative. Stupid game. I died like 8 times before I lasted that battle.

To be honest, Kanno, saving everybody is the easiest and most obvious "puzzle" in any game ever made. You'll do it just by enjoying the game and using the tiniest fraction of common sense.

Killing everyone; now, that takes some serious cock-up-ery. :smug:

I don't know Quin, you don't know how badly I screwed up the protection of Alexandria mini-game in FFIX. I'm sure if it worked with ME rules not only would the death toll be high, but I would have lost most of the Pluto Knights.

I have now decided that the Quarian/Geth debate is the equivalent of the old Northern Ireland debate where there are no clear sides and trying to discuss it with any relevant people will get your ass chewed out by even the people you are siding with. Geez... Tali just about chewed my head off in her loyalty mission to the point where I kept my damn mouth shut when talking to the Quarian leaders. It was really annoying because one of the bigger assholes on the Admiral Board probably has the best, if not the most unpopular view on the conflict, and I honestly felt like anytime I even thought about agreeing with him and put the cursor on that dialogue option, I could just feel Tali giving me the evil eye... :stare:

Its sad when going to the Krogan homeworld and dealing with their political drama feels like a break from controversial subjects. :eep:

Wolf Kanno
02-25-2013, 07:09 PM
I was afraid of that but I figured I would have to deal with the Geth one way or the other. Its only annoying cause I really like Tali (Trying to romance her in this game) but I can already tell that relationship is going to come to an impasse when it comes down to the wire on the Quarian/Geth issue. :eep:

As I said, I have yet to find a good reason for the Genophage to be an issue, and kind of feel the Council races are being dicks about this. That might change in this game but who knows.

Just beat ME3. What a great game. The ending was a bit disappointing and I can't imagine what those who saw it first without the Extended Cut felt. From what I read it was pretty abysmal. That didn't detract from the experience much, though. The entire game was about tying up loose ends and saying goodbye, and it's hard to put an exclamation point on it in the final scenes.

My main gripe was the three choices at the end didn't make any sense. The whole game centered around the theme that the universe isn't black or white. Yet the final choice was exactly that: Destroy the Reapers and all other synthetic life, let them all live, or combine them all into one 'super race' (that makes no sense). I wanted to destroy them from the beginning, yet I also spent a lot of time in the game driving the point home that the Geth and EDI are different from the Reapers. That was the whole point in the game. Reapers=bad sure, but not all synthetics are bad. I was disappointed that my choices from before didn't matter in the end and I ended up destroying them all, because the other two choices (Shephard controls Reapers, or the ludicrous synthesis option) really made no sense in the context of the game. I would have liked to see my previous choices in the game affect the final choice in the end rather than it just be based on the readiness score.

Second gripe: There was no final boss. Just a final wave of enemies (which was pretty crazy). RPGs are always at their best when there is a 'big bad' to fight and I was really hoping to go up against Harbinger at the end. But there was nothing. Not even a final fight with the Illusive Man.

Freya

Here you go to address that last point Del

To address the lack of a boss, the very last enemy you face is a Marauder. Not just any but Marauder Shields. There is a whole fan theory thing about him. He has artwork and comics and everything. The thought is he is actually Nihlis from the first game.

Lies. It is not the worst. Are the other Adepts in the class better? Yes. But if you use it right, it is a good crowd control. I am currently enjoying my Awakened Collector Adept. Sadly, he has no dialogue or catch-phrases. I sorta hoped in a Collector fight he'd all of a sudden go "ASSUMING CONTROL!" and then you turn on your teammates and kill them all. :D
