Everyone had HP ups, along with counter attack and whatnot...

As far as what particular spells...Master materias and mime. That's about it :D

The only character-specific materia swapping I do is with summons.

Cloud:
Phoenix
Typhoon

Cid:
Ramuh
Knights of the Round

Nanaki:
Bahamut (all three incarnations)
Ifrit

Tifa:
Odin
Shiva

Barret:
Alexander
Titan

Yuffie:
Leviathan
Kjata

Cait:
Gets None, well sometimes Choco/Mog

Vincent:
Hades

Oh, and Cloud always gets my main Enemy Skill materia, and either he or Cid get some combination of Counter-attack, Cover, and Long Range.

I always gave Vincent SlashAll materia, it made leveling up Death Penalty much easier. Deathblow suited him well too.

I don't bother equipping my whole party with materia. In my standard party of Cloud/Tifa/Cid, Cloud had most of the magic and command materia, Cid had most of the summons, and Tifa had most of the healing materia -- and everyone had an Enemy Skill and Magic Plus (once I had enough).

For the last couple playthroughs I have tended to fall into this pattern:

1
Cover, Counter & Fury.
Healing and support materia.
Set up to use their MP pool on

2
Command Materia (Deathblow+Added Cut, Double Cut) & Long Range
A mix of support and attack materia

3
Load all my most boosting Magic Materia on to this character for a huge +Magic and +MP bonuses. Also enemy skill

Usually Cloud ends up being the limit break specialist, because his limit breaks are quite good, but I do move it around.

Basically, I give the big physical damage dealers (Cloud, Barrett, Vincent) the specialist crap (Demi, Carbuncle and whatever) that is only required in special situations, and give the weaker ones (erm, the girls) fire ice lightning, core summons like Ifrit and Shiva etc. And try to make sure everyone has Restore, Esuna and Life.

I would move stuff around constantly to level it up.

Cover was always combined with hypers to get character's their limit breaks leveled up, for example.

If someone had a double or triple growth item, and I wanted to master a piece of materia to get more, I'd put it on that person and grind.

The only thing was giving physical characters materia to enhance their abilities, and strong magic characters the same.

I had no qualms about constantly moving things around. :kakapo:

it would take longer than i'd like to list it out... but, i'll just say i try not to swap out Materia and keep each character loaded out to a specific theme fitting their Job Classes/Elemental Affinities... oddly some people like to pretend FFVII doesn't have Job Classes/Elemental Affinity and just loadout however for some really bizarre combinations...

All my characters were materia whores and I basically equipped them all with different combinations depending on the situation.

May I ask at what point in the game?

They all get Restore. I like to play it safe. Then comes a mixture of Magic and Support Materia. It might vary slightly but to be honest there isn't much of a variety in a game this old. Obviously after the fact there could be more in other games.

I give Cloud offensive green and red materia to max out his MAG statistic and cast ridiculous damage (he has the highest Mag in he game outside Aeris).

Tifa I don't give any green or red, so as to keep her Strength, Vitality and HP as high as possible. I may give her command like Steal or Deathblow here and here, and any Independents like HP Plus, Luck +.

Barret - same as above, but to go with his theme of a gun-arm, I like to think that thing could be used for all sorts of purposes, so I give him Enemy Skill. Doesnt mess with his stats, plus there's a lot of statistic-agnostic magic like Matra Magic in there. It makes sense for Barret to shoot missiles out of the gunarm or use it as a flamethrower every now and then. With Barret's naturally high Vitality, I also like to give him Cover, Vitality increasing accessories, and Counter-Attack as well when possible.

Aeris - I give her all regenerative and status effeecting green.

Red XIII - I like to mix offensive and defensive, maybe a summon or two.

Vincent - same as Red

Cait Sith - To go with his theme I give him a lot of negative-status changing green materia, and Hypnocrown as well which I believe helps him with Manipulate command materia.

Yuffie and Cid I follow the Tifa format, with character-appopriate command and independent materia.

I had Cloud, Tifa, Cid, and Barret as my attackers.
I had Aerith, Cait Sith, and Vincent as my spell-casters.
I had Yuffie and Red XIII do a bith of both.

Of course Materia are related to the class I assign to any character!

Any of them has specific Materia and equipments related to the Job class I setup them with...

To analyze Materia alone, skipping the equipment part, I'd say:

Cloud - Mystic Knight: Elemental, Ice, Lightning, All

Barret - Knight/Machinist: Cover, HP Plus, Slash-All (Tools)

Tifa - Monk: Counter Attack, Counter, Deathblow

Aeris - White Mage/Summoner: Barrier, Full Cure, Heal, Destruct, Restore, Revive, Shield, Seal, Exit, Choco-Mog, Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Titan, Odin, Leviathan, Bahamut, Kjata, Alexander, Phoenix, Neo Bahamut, Hades, Typhoon, Bahamut Zero, Knights of the Round (one Summon Materia at a time)

Red XIII - Berserker/Scholar: Fire, All, Sense, Mystify, Added Effect

Yuffie - Thief/Ninja: Steal, Throw, Speed Plus, Enemy Away, Added Cut, Steal as Well, Pre-Emptive, Gil Plus, Sneak Attack, Luck Plus

Cait Sith - Black Mage/Gambler: Comet, Contain, Earth, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Gravity, Mystify, Poison, Time, Transform, Ultima, Manipulate, Magic Plus, Quadra Magic, MP Turbo

Vincent - Ranger/Chemist: Morph, Double Cut, W-Item

Cid - Dragoon/Blue Mage: Enemy Skill, Enemy Lure, Chocobo Lure, Long Range, Underwater

...some, but kept some to one character. I had to change materia a lot towards the end, when I was fighting Sepiroth. Especially as you have to use two teams during the final battle.

I know what you mean but since I use classes I have every character with a role that is useful to the battle, I don't need to have the same Materia combinations on the characters to be effective... Any class could have its usefulness even against Sephiroth...

Of course losing the White Mage (Aeris) on the course it helps that any of the 3 parties includes someone able to heal, although the Item command gives some self-sufficiency to everyone...

Having lost Aeris the most effective healers could be Cid with some of his blue magics or Vincent with his chemist command (W-Item)...

Yes, you got it! :p When Aeris is gone, no more healing spells! Losing a character means also losing his/her role in battle...

Too easy to simply switch her Materia to someone else... A loss is a loss...

Also, as you already noticed... She is the White Mage/Summoner... So no Knights of the Round... Again, too easy... She is the magically powerful last Ancient alive, with her Summoner class brought to full potential (Knights of the Round) she would have been the key to defeat Sephiroth but he kills her before she could achieve that and the party has to renounce to the easy way around...

I never really gave specific materia to anyone.. it was more of giving the materia that took the longest to level to someone who had triple boost on their items

Well, don't you think it's quite casual and impersonal for the character's personality and style like that?

Which sums up my personal problem of having these blank-slate characters. ;)

Hahaha! Well, they are not totally blank-slate even without any Materia since they have differences in weapons and Limits but it's not enough to characterize them adequately... :p Assigning them classes (even while not pre-created by the game but self-created by grouping Materia/equipments into "themes") helps a lot to define them and make them unique... No matter if the game would let you give everything to everyone, you won't do it and decide that any character uses only a limited amount of stuff that is inside the same theme and any theme is based on one of the traditional classes such as Knight, Black Mage or Thief! It always works great to me! :D
