View Full Version : You, a deserted island, a mythical music player, and only five albums to listen to...

Haven't done this in awhile...

Title explains most of this but I'll lay some ground rules. Basically choose five albums you would hope to have if they were going to be the only music you could ever listen to.

No Mix tapes/CD/Playlist
No Compilations with various artists (Example: 80s movie soundtracks with various artist)
No "Best of____" albums
No Live albums

So go!

Kamelot - Ghost Opera
Gorrilaz - Demon Days
Franz Ferdinand (Self Titled)
Oingo Boingo - Oingo Alive (technically songs off other albums, but since Live albus aren't exluded.. ;p)
Wierd Al Yankovic - Hard choice, but I'll go ahead and say Straight Out of Lynwood. :p

I changed it just for you so you need a new fifth album. :p

Sorely tempted as I am just to list GY!BE's core discography and leave it at that, I'll actually choose five artists

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Moonsorrow - Viides luku - Hävitetty (my remastered version)
Enslaved - Mardraum: Beyond the Within (my remastered version)
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (my remastered version)

I think I could live with those, though the urge to list another twenty albums just to spite the idea of having to listen to only five albums for the rest of my life is mightily tempting. Really, though, I never go anywhere without my iPod and phone (which have 26,000 songs between them), so this scenario is kind of unlikely :p

Piss off Kanno, that list is still valid. :colbert:

Oingo Boingo - Boi-ngo then. :p

Alkaline Trio - Good Mourning
Brand New - Fight Off Your Demons
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way
Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things

aaaugh I had a really difficult time choosing between The Photo Album and Transatlanticism and Fight Off Your Demons or The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. Sorry, Arcade Fire, Postal Service and Neutral Milk Hotel - you didn't make the cut.

Tool - Aenima
Metallica - Metallica
Incubus - Make Yourself
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

And for some Canadian content,

Finger Eleven - Tip

You realise that the rules as stated essentially rule out any classical music at all, right?

Pendulum - Immersion
Yellowcard - -Ocean Avenue
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism or Plans. Both are superb.
Ludo - Prepare the preparations
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not

Now That's What I Call Music! 2

Fuck the system.

Pain of Salvation - Scarsick
Radiohead - The Bends
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Beethoven's Last Night
The Butterfly Effect - Final Conversation of Kings

So far Bunny's list is winning with the best Radiohead and Porcupine Tree albums. GJ, Bunny.

That mythical music player better play vinyl!

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Dr. Dog - Fate
Balthazar - Applause
Riverboat Gamblers - Something to Crow About

The Shins – Oh, Inverted World
Joanna Newsom – Have One on Me
Neil Young – After the Gold Rush
Tom Waits – Rain Dogs
Bob Dylan – ... Does his Bootleg series count? If so, Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3. If not... John Wesley Harding.

Tough. Particularly in the case of what album to pick for Waits and Dylan. The prospect depresses me.

I think no matter what I picked I'd grow sick of it very fast. There is no winner here. :( But, here are some albums that will tide me by while I wait, I suppose.

Nubuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy VII OST
Jars of Clay - Jars of Clay
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Mungo Jerry - Electronically Tested (I don't know if the rest of the album is good, I just want to be on a Desert Island and listen to In The Summertime - and hey, new music is always good)
Crowded House - Temple of Low Men

To be honest, I would want some kind of music that I could listen to while being depressed because that feeling that you're gonna die won't just walk away when you're stuck like that. :( I hate being depressed with upbeat music, so that's why I included albums with slower tones. If I was guaranteed the ability to survive on the island for years, I'd probably go for (some) different stuff.

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
The Beatles - The White Album
Radiohead - The Bends

I did say it was a mythical music player, so it would have unlimited battery life, whereas your phone and ipod would eventually lose power. :p

The Captain

Springsteen - Born To Run (Not my favorite but the most complete album)
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life
Billy Joel - The Stranger
Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours

A mix of the upbeat and the sad, the epic and the intimate. Perfect for eternity.

Take care all.

Does my 'mythical' music player have four legs and breathe fire?

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Notorious B.I.G - Ready to Die
Tchaikovsky - 6th Symphony
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

Ugh, never has there been a question I hate so much but am so compelled to answer.

Karnivool :: Themata
Karnivool :: Sound Awake
The Smashing Pumpkins :: Siamese Dream
The Mars Volta :: The Bedlam in Goliath
Carina Round :: The Disconnection

It hurts to think that I would never listen to Superunkown, Soup, Mer De Noms, Lateralus, Blinding White Noise, Fashion Nugget and Appetite for Destruction again though... hurts

I have never found an anime OST I love this much. EVERY SONG is PERFECT.

Malice Mizer - Marveilles
The Human League - Dare!

Are you making fun of my choice? :(

I just chose albums where I like every song on the album. Not necessarily albums with my favourite songs.

I just didn't think anyone really enjoyed Absolution overall! The Fragile's good music for grown-up groovytime; nobody said I was alone there.

>stuck on a desert album with five albums
>taking the 65 minute album

actually I'm half tempted to make a new list I'm selecting purely for length. More music = get bored of it less quickly.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (my remastered version)
The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
Frank Zappa - Läther
Murray Gold - Doctor Who Series 5 OST (my remastered version)

that gives me almost eleven hours of music iirc :monster: Though I'd probably replace one of those with Godspeed anyway

In his defense, that got added because I used Live Albums to cheat more music into my list. :p

How could you pick The Ugly Organ over Happy Hollow?! HOW?!?!?!?!!

Scotty_ffgamer

To be fair, the only Cursive album I've heard is The Ugly Organ. It is one of my favorite albums at the moment though. I'll look up Happy Hollow, but I'm sure my choice will stand. Not only do I love The Ugly Organ musically and for its story, it is also a favorite of mine for memories and such I associate with it.

Edit: I've only listened to 2 songs so far, but I can already safely say I like The Ugly Organ better. I just don't like it as much musically. Maybe the story of Happy Hollow will win me over... but I don't know. Also, there is no cello.

My iTunes library and a solar power generator. Technically not a playlist.

Failing that, Spotify and a WiFi connection with a solar power generator.

Ah, yes, the elusive solar power generator. I will need to start taking one of those everywhere as well, in addition to a charger for my phone and a charger for my iPod. Then I will never need to worry about the desert island question again. :monster:
