So with the new console generation on the horizon, let's look back and think fondly about how so much better gaming was back in the day when we didn't take it so seriously except for console wars. What is your favorite past system?

Good old SNES. PS2 or NES is probably second (though if PS2's backwards-compatibility with PS1 doesn't count then I'd rank PS1 ahead of it).

Without hesitation, PS2. The most wonderful consol ever created. A close second is my old Sega Mega Drive II. Some of the old Sega games (like "Aladdin") actually looked better than many Playstation One games. oO

PC :p

SNES.

Game Boy Advance was also pretty great, in no small part because of all the SNES ports.

That said, pretty much all of my favorite games are PC games...

The SNES, of course!

The PC isn't a console :doublecolbert: If it counts though, obviously the PC, because I can just emulate SNES, NES, PS, etc. games :monster:

PS2.

I love snes but I never had one so ps2 wins, especially since it could play every ps1 game.

The PS2 is my favorite only if it's backwards compatibility with the Sony Playstation counts.

PS1/Sega Saturn, Mega Drive and PC Engine.

It's nearly a tie between PS2 and SNES, but I'm not sure which one ended up at the top.

Of course, my PS2 is also special in that it has a modchip and HDD loader.

Playing SNES was probably the most fun I had playing video games. Like others, I also have to give props to PS2 for its great lineup of games and the fact that it could play any PS1 game.

I'm going to make an executive decision here and say it counts because fuck it, it's the PC.

But for a dedicated console, it has to be the PS2. SNES would be a close second, but the PS2 was the biggest console ever for a reason, and that reason was bitchin' games.

I wouldn't count the PC unless we're going by specific models, so you can't use the general "PC" but if you have some fond memories of the Apple II or Commodore 64 be my guest. :p

Yeah for actual consoles I'd say PS1. I spent more time on that then any other console. PS2 close second.

SNES

Original XBOX.... yeah no
ps2, definitely the ps2.

PS1 would be higher, but I never had any of the good games for it when I was but a wee little kid.

PS2 if you consider PS1 games + backwards compatibility. If you don't count that, then probably PS1.

I'm not counting PC because that covers way too many generations to make it a fair fight. ;)

PS2 and I also loved my Dreamcast!

Another excellent point!

Taking into account it's also a system it does actually have everything going for it!

The PS2 was pretty much the perfect console. With how asinine Sony has become regarding backwards compatibility, it may never be beaten.

That being said, honorable mentions have to go to the PS1 and SNES.

PS2, hands down. I had no idea until recently that Sony were such jerkfaces about backwards compatibility with PS3. I've been wanting to get one but if I can't play all my favorite games then what's the point?

PS1, it was the first console that I was old enough to start buying my own games. That and I actually ended up getting it modded by my uncle so that I could played burned discs, which let me play all the games. :monster:

Second is the SNES because Goddamn.

I also have good memories with the Atari, NES and Sega Master System. How nostalgic..

Um... I'll jump on the PS2 bandwagon. Many of my favourite games were on there and it was just a beautiful system.

Next up, maybe the PS1.

I'm also a fan of the DS family. I'm always playing it. The 3DS was good because it was backwards compatible with the DS, though it does lose the Game Boy Advance compatibility. Annoying, but the DSlite does, so it's okay. I am still annoyed with the PS3's apathy towards backwards-compatibility.

The SNES wasn't the first console I ever owned or played, but it was the first one I ever fell in love with.

PlayStation. I've played a lot of great games on consoles that came before and after, but none of them came close to the first time I played Final Fanasy VII more than a decade ago or Xenogears just a few months ago.

If backwards compatibility counts, PS3. Mine plays PS1, PS2, Turbografx-16, my Chinese copy of Demon's Souls, Blu Rays, streams movies, browses the internet, and helped cure cancer (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/HomePage) for a little bit, too.

Some of the early PS3s have backwards compatibility. Sony just decided to be retarded with the later models.

PC, with PS1, DS, and SNES closely behind.

Because, seriously.

I've found some on eBay that claim to have backwards compatibility. The prices aren't outrageous, so I'm thinking about it.

Sega Mega Drive or Sega Genesis because of Strider. SNES and PS ONE both come a draw second.

If I remember rightly, the 60GB PS3 had backwards compatibility, whilst all others did not.

You're partly correct. The launch 20GB and 60GB models in the US had PS2 backwards compatibility by building the PS2 hardware into them. The 60GB PAL model and the North American 80GB model (models with the model number being CECHExx anyway. There was a later 80GB model and PAL version which had no backwards compatibility at all) had partial backwards compatibility through software emulation. If you want a backwards compatible PS3, go with the North American launch models only. Software emulation isn't worth it unless you're on a PC, and even then, it would need to be a pretty good one for PS2 games.
