The time has finally come!

Today I'm gonna be a Pokémon Trainer!

Hello, my name is Ethan and I am from Newbark Town a small village of the Johto region.
Since I was a little kiddo I wanted to go on an exciting adventure with my own Pokémon and experience everything you can do with them like
training them, playing with them, visiting new towns, fighting other Pokémon Trainers and of course also challenging the Gym Leaders and win the
Pokémon Gym Badges which allow me to battle the high-class trainers of Pokémon the Elite Four of the Pokémon League.

What?! You don't know what Pokémon are? Well, some people would tell you "Pokémon are just Pokémon" but I'm telling you, biologically said, Pokémon are very special
animals which live in our world together with other animals. At least I have heard that. You want to know where those other animals are? Well ... I just don't know.
I have only heard of "Pokémon and other animals living in this world" from some other people but actually never seen the other before. Maybe finding them is a mystery on its own but the adventure with my own Pokémon is all I ever wanted so I guess if you are interested in it you can find it out on your own. Not now, however. First I will tell you the first steps of my journey.
My greatest dream is to become a Pokémon Master and the new Champion. That does not just require me to beat the Elite Four, no - I also need to find and catch all Pokémon of the Johto and Kanto region. Famous Pokémon professors like Professor Samuel Oak and Elm have newly found Pokémon they have never seen before. Isn't that awesome? And who knows how many other Pokémon live in this world without us even knowing? Well, I guess there you have your answer why we haven't even found enough of the other animals if we don't even know everything about Pokémon themselves, ha, ha, ha.
Oh - I talk too much. What I really want and need to achieve is the true title of the Pokémon Champion to finally become a Pokémon Master.
To get this title I need to fulfill my dream and challenge a trainer who has become the newest Pokémon Champion and Master three years ago.
I have never seen him before and I don't know his name. I do not know where he is but he lives in Kanto and I am eager to challenge him!

Well, see ya!

Okay, my first day of the journey begins in my room in Newbark Town. Listening to Prof. Oak's radio show, taking a look at the map of Johto and then it's time to go. My mother is just awesome. She even gave me a PokéGear to support me during my Pokémon adventure. A Pokémon Gear is some sort of multi-functional device which allows me to use certain things like a mobile phone, a clock, a map and many other things. It is incredibly convenient and a new invention for Pokémon Trainers.

First I got to go to Prof. Elm's Lab. There was something odd about this. Before I even entered I felt some presence which clearly did not belong here. When I discovered some red-haired boy peering through one of Professor Elm's windows I knew what it was. Gee, this guy was really rude. He just pushed me away and kept peering.

http://imageshack.us/a/img17/7641/pokemongold03j.png

"Hey, you punk!"

"Just leave him alone", was what I told myself but this boy was not from Newbark Town and he definitely was not the kind of person who seemed like the nice Pokémon Trainers I wanted to meet.
Once I entered the Prof.'s Lab I was asked to visit an old acquaintance of Prof. Elm, Mister Pokémon.
To help me he gave me my very first Pokémon! Isn't that cool?
He let me chose between three Pokémon. Chikorita, a plant Pokémon, Totodile, a water Pokémon and Cyndaquil, a fire Pokémon.
When I looked at Cydaquil and saw the glance of its slim eyes while happily eating a Berry it held in its tiny little hands I couldn't resist but to choose it and with it my first companion.
It seemed to be very happy and the flame on its back shined even brighter so I called it "Flarestar".

http://imageshack.us/a/img687/5562/pokemongold04x.png

"Cynda-cyndah-ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!"

I bet you are curious what happened next, aren't you?
Well, of course I didn't want to wait any longer so after I got a Potion from Prof. Elm's assistant I left town.
It was early in the morning and when I walked through the high grass the first Pokémon crossed my way. Cute little Pidgeys and Sentrets. I was a bit disappointed not to have any Pokéballs since I really wanted to catch some of them but instead I did the next best thing.
"Flarestar, I choose you!", was my shout and my Cyndaquil appeared out of its Pokéball.
So my first own Pokémon Battles were about to be fought. And they were surprisingly easy. I was fascinated by how strong Flarestar was.
Nevertheless I couldn't do anything to Pokémon so whenever they seemed to have enough I ended the battle and went to the one. Why would I harm such great little creatures? I couldn't do that.
Cyndaquil became stronger very easily and after plucking berry from a berry tree we already reached the next town: Cherrygrove City.

I was greeted by an old man who guided me through the town and showed me the Pokémon Center, the Pokémon Mart, told me about Pokémon in the sea and then he even was so nice to give me a map for my PokéGear after we arrived at his house.

http://imageshack.us/a/img23/9144/pokemongold09t.png

"I can really have this? Thank you!"

I talked to some villagers but afterwards I continued my journey to Mr. Pokémon. On my way I even found another man living in a house who told me about berries and gave me one and outside of his house I could get some more. He told me to come back soon so he would give me more of them. Those people were very nice to me and I am glad that my journey began like that even though there was this red-haired-boy first. While I was searching some other Pokémon I saw some trainers battling.

http://imageshack.us/a/img833/2383/pokemongold12.png

"Hey, stay away! I need to concentrate and you distract me!"
"Aww ...!"

However they did not want to be disturbed so I let them fight and just walked away which was really a pity since I wanted to see this battle.

After some battles I returned to town and stayed for the night. My Cyndaquil was also a bit tired from the battles, I guess I asked it for a bit too much for the beginning and it really needed to be cared for by Nurse Joy. I could have also helped my little friend a bit but I did not want to rush and the Pokémon Center can help Pokémon better in general. And when it comes to overstay for the night and let the Pokémon rest, exhausted of battles or not, a Pokémon Center is always a great place to be, I have heard.

http://imageshack.us/a/img443/4278/pokemongold10.png

"Okay, Cyndaquil! Let's stay here for tonight."

When we returned to the route on the next day we continued with the battles and the training and before we even knew we stood in front of Mister Pokémon's house. I got a berry from one of the trees near there, found another Potion lying on the ground and once it picked it up, wondering who must have lost it I knocked on Mr. Pokémon's door.
When I entered and old man with a hat greeted me - Prof. Elm's friend. And he was not alone. The well-known Pokémon Professor Prof. Oak was there for some research. They had a little chit-chat with me, then I got an egg from Mr. Pokémon and when Prof. Oak saw my Cyndaquil he decided to give me Dexter, a Pokédex which contains and gathers information about Pokémon. It is the number one item for a real Pokémon Trainer who wants to catch 'em all so I was very excited and glad I have met him!

http://imageshack.us/a/img341/3025/pokemongold15.png

"Wow! Are you sure I can have this? I always dreamed of having a Pokédex I never thought I would get one that soon!"
"Of course! You seem to be a very reliable Trainer and know how to treat your Pokémon. You remind me of a young Trainer who went on his own journey some years ago. He shows the same kind of respect to your Pokémon you do and they share a real friendship. You are very much like him and I am glad when I see Pokémon Trainers like this. Just stay like this and show your Pokémon how much you like them and they will never disappoint you and you'll get very good friends!"
"I will! Right, Cynda?"
"Cynda-cyndaquil!"
"Thank you, Professor Oak!"

He left then to be in time for his radio show in Goldenrod City. I stayed there for a moment rested with Cyndaquil and talked with Mr. Pokémon but then I headed home back again.
At least that was my intention.
When we left Mr. Pokémon's place the phone rang.
It was Prof. Elm - he did not know what to say and sounded upset.

http://imageshack.us/a/img690/9222/pokemongold17e.png

"Professor! Professor! What's going on?!"

I needed to hurry so I could see what happened!

And then once I arrived in Cherrygrove City and took the way to Newbark Town I ran into him again:
It was the red-haired guy.
He was as rude as I have met him before. But this time he challenged me.
So this was gonna be my first Pokémon Trainer Battle ...

He threw a Pokéball and sent out a Totodile.
This Totodile looked very familiar for me and I had also heard that Pokémon like those are not even the most common
ones ... it seemed to be suspicious for me and I was sure he stole it from Prof. Elm but first I needed to arrive at home.
The boy was no very good trainer. Not only that he seemed like this was his first battle, he was as rude to the Pokémon as he
was to me. The Totodile he used seemed to be more scared of him than anything else when he gave his really aggressive commands.
No wonder that he easily lost against me and Cyndaquil then.
That made the boy even more angry, however. "Grr ... come back!", he told the Pokémon. He told me his name and vanished as fast as he appeared.

http://imageshack.us/a/img837/9564/pokemongold25.pnghttp://imageshack.us/a/img51/4335/pokemongold26.pnghttp://imageshack.us/a/img254/4637/pokemongold27.png

"Tse ... don't think you are that great just because you have won ... my Pokémon simply is too weak at the moment. I will show it how to follow my orders and get stronger."
"Who are you anyway?"
"My name is Silver. I'm gonna be the strongest Pokémon Trainer ever."
"I'm not a Pokémon Trainer for so long, Silver. But the way you treat your Pokémon is really not the way it deserved to be treated, I think."
"Hmph! That's why you and your Pokémon will always be weaklings!"
"I don't think so ... Pokémon and Trainers need to trust and respect each other. Only this way both of them can get really strong."
"I do not expect someone like you to understand my reasonings. Next time I'll show you who's boss!"

I had a bad feeling about this and Prof. Elm and I also felt, that I would not see this boy for the last time. And I also felt sorry for the Totodile, it made me a bit sad.

Now it was about time to hurry back home ...!

It is a pretty long walk from Cherrygrove to Newbark - considering the problem the Professor told me about, or at least tried to, it was also understandable that I ran as fast as I could, I guess. I grabbed another Potion on my way and sprinted home. I was pretty exhausted when I arrived but when I entered the Lab a police man already asked Prof. Elm about something. They told me one of the Pokémon was stolen and the boy I fought was the thief so I was right! When I heard about the thief I told them everything I knew. They got to know his name and the police man left.
It was time then to tell the Professor about he egg. And he really was surprised to see it. He wondered about it being a Pokémon egg. Admittedly, I have never seen a Pokémon egg before and Professor Elm said there were not so many researches about Pokémon babies earlier but it seemed to be something obvious for me that Pokémon hatch from eggs, I have never thought about any other way. Of course seeing one of those eggs was not less fascinating though. Prof. Elm even thought that there are other Pokémon which do not hatch from eggs. It was very interesting and I hope to see some of these Pokémon one day. I want to see all of those Pokémon, no matter where they come from.
When I showed the Prof. my Pokédex he was not less surprised than me. And he foresaw my future to be that of a great Champ. I hope he is right. He told me to try my best in Violet City and I got my first Pokéballs from his assistant.

I decided to stay at home for this night and tell Mom about everything I have experienced. I showed her Cynda and she totally fell in love with it. When I readied everything I went to sleep.

http://imageshack.us/a/img17/1162/pokemongold01.png

"Really Mom, you are the best!"

Mom woke me up early in the morning. It was still dark and she knew I wanted to start my journey as fast as possible. "If you hurry you will arrive in Violet City in the afternoon, honey", she told me. She made me breakfast and then it was about time to say goodbye for now.
"Wait", she said, "listen, money is important on a journey of a young trainer. Send some of your Pokédollar to me everytime and I'll save it for you."
"Alright, thanks, Mom!", I said. she gave me a kiss on the cheek and with a tear in her eye she let me go. "I'm proud of you, never forget that!", she said when I looked back to our house. She stayed outside and waved. I was sad but my excitement for this adventure was greater and I knew I would return to tell Mom of it.

"Okies! Let's catch 'em all!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcBLl4z5Sig

Some guy who looked for Pokémon in the grass outside of Newbark Town asked me if I know how to catch Pokémon. I saw it often so I refused his kind offer to show me.
Many Pokémon appeared I have never seen outside before. And I guess what I heard from the Professor was right: There are Pokémon which only appear under several circumstances. Some Pokémon look for food when it is sunny, some when it is night, some like rain more, this kind of stuff. Nevertheless - seeing it with my own eyes was way more interesting than hearing it or reading about it. When I was half on the way back to Cherrygrove I suddenly heard squeaky voice. I followed it and found myself on Route 46. Even though it was not the right way I must have know what it was. "Oh ... what is that ...?", I wondered since I became sleepy again. Even Cynda yawned.

http://imageshack.us/a/img14/3396/pokemongold05.png

"Hey! Where are you?"

However, I did not find what I was looking for - first. The voice was also gone so I could not follow it anymore. Instead I stumbled over a Geodude.

http://imageshack.us/a/img59/6236/pokemongold04.png

"Ge-Geo!", it barked and floated around me. "Ouch ...", I complained about the scratches on my knees. "Gee, Geo!" "Okay, let's do this!", I said. "Come, Cynda!"
Flarestar stood between me and Geodude now.
"Cyndaquil!", he squeaked.
"Awesome, let's catch it!", I told my companion. "Cyndaquil, use Tackle!"
"Cynda-!"
Rushing at his opponent and ramming it with a bodyblow that I thought would be enough I felt like a total dork when Cynda did like nothing to Geodude. It seemed that hitting his enemy wwas even more painful to Cyndaquil than to Geodude himself. "No ...! Cynda, are you alright?", I asked. Cyndaquil just stood up and showed more confidence than me. He tried another Tackle. I worried a bit about what would happen. Then realised that I could not possibly show less will than my friend. "Flarestar, Leer!", I shouted. It seemed to affect Geodude. Like paralyzed there was a good opportunity to break through the defense with another Tackle and Cynda's attack really succeeded. After a while when both of them hit each other even Geodude seemed pretty tired and gasped.
"Gee-Gee .."
"Okay, Cynda, that's enough. You've done great!", I cheered and took one of the Pokéballs from my belt. I threw it at Geodude.
"Pokéball, go!"
Geodude was too tired to dodge it. It vanished into the Pokéball and the ball began to shake slightly. "Come on!", I hoped. One jiggle. "Please ...", I begged. Two jiggles. And there it was: The third jiggle. The Pokéball made a successful "Ding" sound and Geodude was caught. "Yihaah! We did it, Flarestar!", I celebrated happily while holding Cynda in my arms. "Cyn-Cyndaquil!", my friend answered. He seemed very happy, too. I took the Pokéball with my Geodude and opened it. My new Pokémon appeared. With the name "Gaia" greeted my new friend and said: "Hey, Gaia! You will come with us now!" And Geodude seemed also very happy. The battle with me and Flarestar must have been fun for it. I gave them both some Potions and they seemed to feel great again afterwards.

http://imageshack.us/a/img690/813/pokemongold07r.png

We took a break here and ate something. And suddenly, as if it would have waited for a good moment it appeared:
A Jigglypuff.
"Jiggly~ Jiggly-Jigglypu~uff!", it said. No, it sang. I immediately recognized this voice: It was the voice I followed before.
"It seems the break is over, buddies!", I said. And Flarestar and Gaia were as eager to fight as I was. "This is great!", I said. I would have never dreamed of seeing a Jigglypuff here. And dreaming is the right word when talking about Jigglypuffs.
I wanted to catch it, no matter what.

Once Jigglypuff noticed that I want to battle it, it was a bit scared. However once I called Cyndaquil for fighting it, it seemed to be very confident again. And I knew why just a few moment laters. "Okay, Cynda! Go! Tackle!", I said. My friend rushed at Jigglypuff but the Pokémon just opened its mouth and began to sing:
"Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-Jiggly~pu~ff~"
"Wait - what?!", I asked surprised. Cyndaquil just stopped running. And he sleeped! "No! Cyndaquil!", I tried to wake him up. However it was not use. And I also felt kinda sleepy again. This Jigglypuff definitely knew how to defend itself. I have heard and read much about it. And the longer the fight lasted the more I wanted to catch it.
"Cyndaquil, come back!", I told and called him back into his Pokéball. I guess he did not even notice while sleeping.
Of course I did not give up! It was time now for my new Pokémon!
"Gaia! I choose you!"
Both of them were not in their Pokéball when the battle began and Geodude seemed to wait for the fight during the whole time. "Geodude!", it barked and floated around.
"Tackle!"
Geodude tackled his opponent. Jigglypuff tried another singing technique but Geodude hit it before it was able to sing. I felt a bit sorry when I saw that. But I would care about it once I have caught it, was what I thaught.
"Great! Geodude, Tackle"
Another successful Tackle.
Then Jigglypuff succeeded with another song.
"Jigglypuuu~ff!"
Now both of my Pokémon were asleep. "Uh ... Geodude, come back!", I said and used his Pokéball.
Then I called Cyndaquil again.
However, when I tried to wake it up again nothing happened.
"Oh, come on, Cynda!"
With a "Ji-Ji-Jigglypuff!" Jigglypuff laughed happily at what I was trying.
But then Cyndaquil awoke.
"Cyndaquil, use Ember!"
"Cynda", he shouted while the flame on his back grew. Then he spit out a small fireball which directly hit Jigglypuff.
"Jiggly~", it shouted.
"Okay, enough!", I meant, "Pokéball! Go!"
When Jigglypuff opened its big eyes after the attack it just saw the Pokéball flying in its direction, probably wondering what will happen. Then it vanished.
And a few seconds later I caught it.

http://imageshack.us/a/img145/2315/pokemongold08.png

I called her "Lenne" and with my two new Pokémon I went to the Pokémon Center in Cherrygrove City and asked Nurse Joy for help. There we rested and had a snack. My new friends seemed to be very happy to be with me. I was impressed by Geodude's ambitious look and Jigglypuff's cute eyes and smile fascinated me.
Also smiling, I fondled Cynda.

http://imageshack.us/a/img811/7268/pokemongold06.png

"This is gonna be great, guys! I'm so happy you're with me now!"

This journey could not have possibly began better.

The sun already rose and while we all could have taken a short nap our break was than enough and our excitement to reach Violet City was greater than anything else we felt. We said goodbye to Nurse Joey and with her "Thank you, we hope to see you again, hopefully less exhausted!", in our ears we headed to the next city where our first Badge should wait.
The route to Violet was long and we have seen many Pokémon. I was impressed by all of them and I felt like I should catch every single one I see but I did not. Some of them just wanted a normal battle so we took the opportunity for some sparring. After fighting some wild Pokémon we ran into the guy who battled the day before. He was a young boy who sat there, camping and eating with his Rattata.
"Yo!", he shouted when we crossed their ways.
"Aren't you the boy who watched our battle yesterday?"
"Uhm, yes", I answered not too sure what he intended with his question.
"Okay. I'm Joey. How 'bout a battle? You seemed to be interested."
I realized now. He challenged me. For my first real Pokémon battle. Well, except the one against Silver, of course.
"Uh, sure. Why not?", was my reply to accept his challenge.
"Heh", he laughed for a moment when he saw my Cyndaquil running around out of its Pokéball and next to me.
"You're from Newbark, right?"
I wondered again about his curiosity.
"Yeah, why do you ask?"
"So you have just begun your journey", he concluded and smiled confident. "And this is your first Trainer battle? Don't be too disappointed if you begin your journey with a loss."
I just looked at Flarestar for a moment, as he, my faithful companion, looked to me.
"Well", I said, "I guess I'll deal with it then." Then I smiled. I did not feel the slightest fear. Excited to battle him and sure I would win I went a few steps back for the battle.
"Don't worry. It is no shame to lose against my top-notch Rattata!", he laughed while his companion already stood before him.
So now our first real Trainer battle should begin. And of course I chose my first Pokémon ever to fight in it first.
"Go, Cynda!", I said and told it to use Tackle. Cyndaquil was in a great shape and it really showed the will to battle. He and Rattata ran right in the direction of their respective opponent and dodged their attacks. "Cynda, Ember!" Before Rattata could fully turn around, the flame on Cyndaquil's back appeared and he spit out a fireball like in his battle with Jigglypuff. When Rattata saw it it looked totally surprised. Not being able to dodge it after its maneuver it was fully hit by Cynda's move.
The battle was over.
For a short moment neither me nor Joey said something. Then he seemed to realitzed was happened. "O-Oh ... no! This can't be! Rattata!"
The poor Rattata was defeated. It lied on the ground, striked down by the forceful fireball of my good friend, Cyndaquil. Joey used his Pokéball to call Rattata back:
"Rattata, come back!"
He then went to me. When he stood in front of me again he looked into my eyes. "Well ... I guess you really are a good Trainer. As someone who also has just begun training his Pokémon I think I was a bit too cocky. I'm sorry."
Then he shaked my hand.
"Hm ... I'm sure not only you need to lean alot. We should both keep doing our best and train our Pokémon."
We both smiled.
"You're right. Maybe you could give me your phone number? If my Pokémon and I are stronger we fight again."
"Sure", I said and we traded our numbers.
"You want to go to Violet City to challenge Falkner? If you keep training your Pokémon that good I am sure you will win!"
"Thank you", I answered.
Then my Pokémon and me continued our journey.

We did not want to wait any longer. However, we still had to walk half of the way. It was a long was but many trainers which also just started their Pokémon journey and which wanted to talk to us, battle us and a great variety of Pokémon were there to spend our time with. I noticed that travelling to the cities really was as interesting as what I expected to be from the experience we could get from the battle with the Gym Leaders. Keeping that in my mind I could not possibly be disappointed by what I got to see everytime when wandering around with my Pokémon. Every single moment of it was its own great moment of an even greater adventure. And this feeling of me being at the beginning of my Pokémon adventure has never changed. Not even today. Because there is so many more to do and to find.
The trainers I saw on the route trained their Pokémon and gave me some useful advices. When I reached the Dark Cave on a lake I new we were almost there. There was some guy sleeping at a tree were fruits for Pokémon grew. I did not want to disturb him so I did not speak to him too much and did not challenge him. When peaking into the Dark Cave I immediately heard the scary sound of some Pokémon. I did not see them and yet I knew which they were. They were Zubats. Zubats are blue bat Pokémon and many of them live in dark places. For a moment I thought about catching one of them but I could barely see my hand once I went to far into the cave and even though I have heard of a rare Pokémon living in the cave from a story which was told by one of the boys in my hometown I did not search for it long enough. His father even told me there were some Pokémon experts which study some of those Pokémon and know when they prefer to come out to look for food and all these things.
So for now I left the Cave and headed to Violet again. There were some Bug Catchers who were eager to fight us. I really enjoyed those battles but they already knew fighting my Cynda and Geodude was a disadvantage for them. There I began to think about the different types of Pokémon and that some of them are clearly better in battle when they face a certain opponent. I was informed about this by a young teenage trainer in Newbark once but she also told me there is much more to learn about it when you do your own Pokémon battles. And now I knew she was right.
On my way I noticed something moving slowly in the grass. When I approached I saw what it was. It was a Bellsprout, well hidden with its colors in the grass. Its shaking body was funny to see but the longer you look at this Pokémon the more confused you are, I tell you.
Soon a second one appeared. With Cynda's help I was able to catch them both at once and called once of them "Neochu". All the bug and grass type Pokémon on this route were good to train Cynda and Geodude and with them seemingly getting stronger I knew the battle for my first Badge would not be too hard. I was very sure about winning the Badge soon after a great battle with the Gym Leader.

Half an hour later we reached the gate to Violet City. It was a big and nice city were many people lived and many of them were Pokémon Trainers. Actually many of them were new Pokémon Trainers. They just came out of a Pokémon School after they lessons were over.

http://imageshack.us/a/img805/2148/pokemongold03.png

"We finally made it!"

And far behind it I could see a great Tower, the Sprout Tower. What I was told about it was true: The towers really moved slightly. It was amazing to watch. I definitely needed to visit it later. But for now the Gym Leader awaited me.
When I was about to go to the Gym I saw a person at the entrance of the Tower: It was Silver. His gaze was focussed on me. I looked at him, then he just smiled arrogantly, turned around and vanished into the tower.
So he was in town, too. Maybe I would see him later, was my thought.

"So this is the famous Sprout Tower!"

I finally reached the Gym after Nurse Joy helped my Pokémon.
The roof of the Gym was open. The atmosphere was very fitting for a bird Pokémon Gym. I felt like I was in an opened bird cage.
When I entered the first bird trainers, young teenagers and adults greeted me. They challenged me and told me I would need to beat them first to challenge their Gym Leader Falkner. Using Spearows and Pidgeys they were interesting opponents for Cynda but even while flying around they could not stop us. All of them were beaten by Cynda's quick and timed fire moves. This was I was able to see how a bird trainer thinks and acts and I thought this would be very useful for the battle with Falkner. Of course I expected him to be more experienced and even more strategic.
And I was so right.
When I beat the last one he went to Falkner who just stood there with his back to me while looking up to the skies. A great Pidgeotto was flying around and performed some impressive maneuvers.
"Falkner, there is a trainer who wants to fight you."
"Very well", he said, "Thank you."
He then turned around and went to me.

"Hello"; he greeted me kindly, "I'm Falkner, the leader of this Gym."
"Hi, I'm Ethan", I replied.
"You are from Newbark Town, right? And your are an acquaintance of Prof. Elm."
I was also impressed by how much he knew about me already.
"Yes."
"I phoned him earlier before. He told me you would come soon. And he told me I would have another real challenge with you."
Blushing I tried to look into the skies so I did not need to look at him. I was a bit embarassed by what they thought about me. And honored.
Falkner smiled.
"You know, my father also was the Gym Leader here", he told me, "He was a famous bird trainer. I hope that I will be as good as he is one day."
"We all never stop to learn and grow from our experiences", he continued his speech.
I did not know what to say. I just nodded. It sounded wise and I definitely agreed to his words.
"Of course ...", he said, "... we need to get new experiences for that in the first place."
His look suddenly changed. His smile was the same but now he seemed very confident.
"Now let's battle so we can learn more about our Pokémon and ourselves. I, Falkner, accept your challenge!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtYpPKwua_E

He just waved. Then a Pidgey which was sitting on the edge of the roof next to the Pidgeotto from before came down to us.
"Rawww!"
"Let's see what kind of trainer you really are!"
So now the time was finally there. I decided to pick one of my Pokéballs and not Cynda which was not in his Pokéball.
"Geodude!", I shouted, "I choose you!"
Geodude appeared. He looked great and was perfect to begin our battle.
"Gee!", he barked.
"Pidgey!", Falkner said, "You know what to do!"
With another "Rawww!" Falkner's Pidgey began to fly around in a circle.
"Geodude! Try to get it with a Tackle!"
Geodude tried hisbest. There were some moments were he almost got Falkner's Pokémon but as a real bird Pokémon it was way faster than my levitating Geodude. Geodude was able to fly too, but now I knew that it really wasnot able to compete with Pidgey when it came to that.
I needed to think of a new plan.
But Falkner seemed to work on his own. He has tested me as I could see and he still smiled confidently. However, he knew that I would not give up that easily.
I tried to be more strategic now.
"Gaia, Rock Throw!"
Gaia took one of the medium-sized stones at the edge of tge Gym and readied his attack.
"Pidgey, Sand Attack!", he said.
His Pidgey flew in another circle and then appeared behind Gaia to blow a sand cloud in his direction. When Gaia threw his stone at Pidgey he lost his focus and Pidgey could dodge it easily.
"Great, Pidgey, another Sand Attack!"
This time Pidgey attacked from another side. Another dust cloud was blown in Geodude's face.
"Gee!"
"Geodude, hang in there!"
Geodude used another stone. However, this one also was no good against the nimble Pidgey and its Sand Attacks.
I stood there, not knowing how to handle this situation. This can't be, was what I thought. I could not possible lose my first Gym battle like this.
I needed to keep calm.
"Geodude! Wait for a moment!", I said. Geodude just floated at one spot and stopped the rest of his attacks he tried to hit with all the time.
Falkner seemed to be interested in what would happen next.
"Good, you are not nervous and think about a plan", he said, "But never forget that hesitating can give your opponent the opportunity to act first."
And he did so. "Pidgey! Tackle!", he ordered his Pokémon to attack Geodude.
As speedy as Pidgey was, it need to get in melee range for its attack. It flew very fast but I knew there was a good moment to be successful.
When it reached my Geodude I suddenly began to smile. Falkner looked surprised. He realized that I wanted him to do something like that.
"Pidgey, wait!", he said. But it was to late. His Pidgey was already to close.
"Now, Geodude!", I shouted, "Get it!"
Without being able to stop in time Pidgey flew directly in Gaia's hands, not being able to escape his grip.
"Awesome, Gaia! Tackle!"
Geodude let go of Pidgey for a moment just to hit it with a move.
"Raaww!", Pidgey shouted after being hurt. It flew up into the sky again.
"Don't give up, Pidgey!" Sand Attack!"
Another sand cloud should confuse my Geodude. But not this time.
"Geodude!", I shouted ambitiously, "Dodge!"
"Gee!"
Geodude levitated away without any problems.
"Now! Rock Throw!"
A new try, I thought. But of course Falkner did not want to give up with his Pidgey.
"Fly around, Pidgey! Dodge his moves!"
Even after being hit by one of Geodude's powerful Tackle Pidgey did very well dodging his stones.
But eventually it was too exhausted of all that and slowed down. When I noticed that I shouted:
"Geodude! Hit it with one of the smaller stones!"
"Gee!"
Geodude picked one of many stones he held in his hands, this time one half as big as his hand and threw it at Pidgey.
"Raaww!"
Pidgey was hit and fell to the ground.
Falkner seemed worried but also proud. "Pidgey, you were great. Come back!", he said and used his Pokéball.

"Well", he said, "So its time for my second and final Pokémon."
I could not wait to see it.
Falkner just raised his arm. And Pidgeotto, the Pokémon I expected, landed on it.
"Okay, then let's see what you are capable of!", he said
I smiled.
I decided to call Geodude back.
"You were awesome, Geodude. Come back!"
Then I told Cyndaquil its time has come.
Both Pokémon looked at each other, waiting for the second round to begin.
And so their trainers.
The really hard part of the battle was about to begin.
We both smiled.

<xml> <o:officedocumentsettings><o:allowpng></o:allowpng></o:officedocumentsettings></xml>Tension rose while gazing at each other.
“Both you and your Pokémon are vigilant and creative”, Falkner said, “That is good. Not everything is about pure advantage and strength. You will meet cunning teams who actually know how to beat you even if they seem to be in a worse position.”
“Thanks”, I responded honestly, “I do expect various styles and ways to live and train with Pokémon. I am sure I can learn much, especially from you Leaders.”
Grinning, Falkner ran his fingers through his hair.
“Then I will try my best to fulfill your expectations. Are you ready for the second round?”

“You may bet!”, I said.

“Great! Then allow me to show you the pinnacle of air dancing!”, he introduced his next Pokémon and moved his arm so it began to fly up in the sky.

“Pidgeotto! Go, show them what you got!”

“Alright!”, I meant eagerly and cheered on my Cyndaquil.

“Get ‘em, Cynda!”

My friend began running at a fast pace, always sighting his opponent.

“Cynda!”
With his battle shout he was ready for the first move. “Cyndaquil!”, I said, “Tackle!”
Suddenly he jumped up to Falkner’s Pokémon, just to miss, after the bird Pokémon dodged easily.
Falkner smiled.
“My Pidgeotto is way faster than Pidgey. And your Cyndaquil cannot even fly. It is useless to try. You’d be better doing this battle with your Geodude.”
“Don’t underestimate me, Falkner”, I warned him with a confident smirk, “You yourself said it is not all about the most obvious advantages. I may be just at the beginning of my journey, but there are two things already that I know: Me and my Pokémon are a team and we learn fast!”
He paused briefly. Then, not too much impressed of my speech he meant:
“I am sure you are skilled and you will become a good team one day. But lacking experience will often be a great obstacle. Even with a great strategy your Pokémon will probably not win. Pidgeotto just need to fly even higher, then you can’t even reach it, anymore.”
“Really?”, I asked, “However, that will mean he also can’t attack me.”
My opponent just raised his hand up to the sky.
“You will see that this is not true. Pidgeotto! Ascend! Then use Gust!”
“What?”, I wondered watching his Pokémon flying even higher, completely out of reach for Cyndaquil. He then started flapping his wings fast, creating a strong gust of wind, hitting my Cyndaquil. “Cynda!”, he squeeked and fell behind.
“No, Flarestar!”, I shouted. Luckily he got up pretty quickly again.
“You see? You cannot win this battle. Not with Cyndaquil. Call Gaia again. Maybe you have at least a little chance this way. However … I can tell you that my Pokémon’s speed will not be surpassed by you. Even your other Pokémon being able to reach Pidgetto in the sky can hardly touch him.”
I just laughed. “I will show you right here and now that my Cyndaquil can beat your Pidgeotto! You better think of a better plan if you really want to beat us!”
Falkner looked just amazed. This kind of fighting spirit was something he rarely saw.
“Then show me!”, he challenged me.
I pointed to his Pokémon. “Cyndaquil! Run! Then jump up to him!”
My Pokémon repeated his moves. “Hmph, I thought you would have thought of a better idea. It is a pity actually”, Falkner said, “Don’t you understand? Your Cyndaquil will never reach my Pidgeotto! And it will not even need to try again. Attack with another Gust!”
“Go!”, I reacted and commanded Flarestar to dodge the wind blow, “Now jump!”
“Huh?”
Falkner was perplexed.
“Cyndaquil! Ember!”, I shouted.
“… so that was it!”, my opponent finally realized. His Pokémon however was not able to start another attack so short after. When Cyndaquil spit a fireball right in his direction he could not start a counter-attack.
Still, it was not as easy as it seemed to be.
“Nah! Pidgeotto! Move!”
Unable to start another attack, Falkner’s Pokémon just did as he said and avoided our attack by flying only a bit to the side. I was very fascinated by the power of this Pokémon. And Falkner now really looked like he knew he could not risk too much in this battle.
“Okay, Cynda! Don’t let him get away!”, I told my friend once he reached the ground again. Falkner used the moment of his landing for a new attack, however. “Quick, my friend! Another Gust!”
The next blow was about to hit Cyndaquil. “Dodge and then use Ember!”
Without any problems he dodged the wind attack and started his fireball attack. This one was not the best idea from me. Falkner grinned. Pidgeotto still used his Gust attack and just aimed at the new point Cynda stood at. “Don’t give up!”, I said.
The two attacks clashed against, then the fireball was just blown away, leaving Cynda defenseless for the attack of his opponent. “Cynda!”, it squeeked again, getting hit by Pidgeotto’s move.
“Oh, no! Cynda!”, I cried caring. I was really worried about my friend. He took two direct hits from Pidgeotto’s strong attacks. I could see that he tried to stand up again. I knew he was still able to fight, he was tough but another hit would have been his defeat.
When I saw Cyndaquil trying to get up his feet I was thinking about giving up. I did not really want him to get hurt anymore and I could not see him in this bad shape.
“You should do it. Give up”, Falkner confirmed my thinking while reading it in my eyes.
I only lokked at my friend.
“Cynda …”
Then I saw the glance in his eyes. He was fighting for both of us. For me and for him. He was fighting for our team. And this spirit was something we both shared.
“Cynda! Get up!”, I said.
He finally did.
“Are you really sure about this, Ethan?”, Falkner asked me. “A good trainer knows when he can push his Pokémon over their limits but he also needs to know when he needs to care about their health first.”
“I am sure, Falkner!”, I answered, “I do worry about my friend but still I know that we both have the spirit to fight!”
“Okay, then let’s do this!”, he meant nodding. “I’ll finish this quickly.”
“Come on, Flarestar!”, I rooted for him, “Get ready for another Ember!”
“Pidgeotto! Use a Sand Attack!”
“Wait! Don’t move!” , I said to my Pokémon which readied his attack. He was completely covered in a cloud of sand now.
Falkner hesitated for a moment. He wanted to see what I exactly I was waiting for.
Then we ended this battle.
“Now, Cyndaquil! Jump!”
My friend jumped out of the cloud, in Pidgeotto’s direction.
“Gust!”, Falkner shouted.
“Okay, that’s it! Flarestar, use your Ember with everything you got!”
While creating the new wind attack to hit my friend Cynda, Pidgeotto could no longer dodge. He tried to blow him away but by spitting out three fireballs at once, Cyndaquil managed to create and attack strong enough to break through the wind wall and hit Falkner’s surprised Pokémon with the full power. “Raaw!”, Pidgeotto shouted and feel to the ground. Falkner was as surprised as his friend but also very worried about him. “Pidgeotto!”, he said, running to his Pokémon and took him into his arms. “You were great, my friend. You have deserved a break”, he said gladly smiling. The same glad but also tired “Raaw …” of his friend showed how deep their friendship actually was.
Then he called him back into his Pokéball.
Once I realized that I actually won and ran to my Cyndaquil, too, taking him in my arms and celebrating our victory with a cheerful “We did it, Cynda! Oh, you’r e so great!” Cynda just squeeked with another happy Cynda.
Then it began to glow.
“Oh?!”, I wondered about what happened while I had him in my arms.
Falkner walked up to be, very fascinating by what was actually happening. He understood already and began to smile.
But I did not know what happened yet.
When I held my friend in his arms and he glowed he suddenly became even bigger, changing his form. “Qui-Quil!”, he greeted me with his new look.
Now I got it.
My friend evolved for the first time.
“This is amazing!”
And I was so glad and happy to see it that I could not stop hugging him.
