Motomu Toriyama has recently discussed some of the details in regards to the ending of the hotly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII sequel; 'Lightning Returns'.

The game director disclosed that instead of having multiple branch endings like the previous game in the trilogy, the game will have only "one true ending". The reasoning behind this decision perhaps comes from the aim to make this the conclusion to Lightning's story, and to finally close the door. For fans worrying that the game may be very linear and structured - affecting replay value, Toriyama commented; "the game is structured so that time is constantly ticking away during gameplay and the world moving and changing with it, meaning that every time you play through you can have a new experience.”

How do you think the saga will end? Are you expecting a happy ending for this fan-favourite heroine? Or do you think that Square-Enix might shock us all with some twists and turns? Either way, this story is about to end and anything could happen...

Will there be smiles or sorrow for Lightning at the end of her journey?

I fully expect a happy ending. As has been said before, SE absolutely loves Lightning and her saga, so they would have to be heartless dicks to give her a melancholic ending.

I hope there is a happy ending; Lightning deserves it. And I should see her smile when the ending comes, in her new glasses that is. :)

Ending: Lightning probably dies. But is brought back to life by Etro. Dances the funky chicken at Serah & Snow's 50th wedding anniversary.

While having its paradox endings Final Fantasy XIII-2 also had one true ending so I expected it here as well.

Lightning defeats the villains of the game and then all of a sudden of all the main heroes from past FF games come out of nowhere and attack Lightning, Lightning kills them all and then sits of a throne suddenly the president of SE comes out and gives Lightning a crown and kisses her hand.

The camera zooms to outside where there's a giant Lightning statue- all gold and the rest of the SE staff dancing around it and some even bowing down to it.

Camera goes back to Lightning putting on her sunglasses where underneath her feet bending down to her are Cloud and Sephiroth, lightning puts her feet on them like foot-stills. Cloud swears at Sephiroth while Sephiroth flips Cloud the bird. SE are outraged at this and they all chuck Cloud and Sephiroth out of Lightning's palace.

Then Wada comes up and whispers to Lightning in her ear " I built a shrine for you... " Lightning blushes and then the scene cuts to Lightning in a sexy bedroom outfit lying in bed with the rest of the SE staff also in bed looking at Lighting in a seductive manner. Wada announces " We all love you Lightning..." Lightning puts a cig her mouth and nods her head.

THE END.

I want a happy ending, FFXIII had a happy ending, and they couldn't leave it alone, so they sure as hell better make it a happy ending.

In a game with a time sensitive element and requiring multiple play throughs to see it all, I am a little surprised there aren't multiple endings.

sayin something has 'one true ending' totally means there's multiple endings

It does?

yeah for sure
'one true ending' is pretty much saying 'multiple false endings'

Or "one canon ending."

Two or three possible endings seem reasonable given the games' structure. Then again, XIII-2's multiple endings turned me off based on their execution.

I suppose one ending is satisfying given it's this franchise's finale.
