If someone asked you what you found to be the best thing about FFIX, what would you say to them?

Personally, I'm torn between saying the music or the design as they were the first things that awe struck me.

I would say story.

I'll say aesthetics. The overall artstyle, character designs, and location designs are probably the biggest aspect of the game's charm for me.

I love everything up there.

I chose other because I just appreciate the feel. It's both calm and epic at the same time. When you start out the game, you know Brahne's up to no good, but you don't understand the extent of what's going on. As you progress in the game the tension builds.

Also Chocobo Hot and Cold is the greatest mini game ever.

To single out a particular element would discredit the experience.

Everything is overrated except the music, which is as perfect as people say.

Pretty much - the atmosphere in general would be my answer.

Music.

I could never tolerate the main battle theme, but other than that the music is very good.

Shouldn't the story and writing be put together in the same category I don't know how to choose between the two.

Script vs. Story overall-type thing

The feel. Specifically, how it executed the Final Fantasy feel :D

the part where you hit all 4 shoulder buttons, select, and start at the same time...
really though, the music was great, there's no denying that for me...
it's too bad the best character in the game, Beatrix, barely got any playtime... i would have loved if she were a permanent party member, i would have actually played the game to the end then...

The way that Steiner's armour clinks as he runs around. Also Steiner's blatant eyeliner. Steiner.

I once named him Rusty, that was one hell of a Disc 1.

Writing, easily. The story's fun, but I think it has too many weak elements--Garland, Gaia and Terra, Kuja and Necron--to be truly great. It's just that the general character development, atmosphere, dialogue, and everything else put into the game elevates that story into something really wonderful. The localization deftly mixes goofiness and high adventure and charm so well, and the ATEs are a really cool technique for expanding the narrative.

I love basically everything about IX, but the writing's so much better than most other Japanese games of the time it's really incredib

Oh there are so many things, making up, as Bolivar says, "The Feel". It's also an exciting blend of modern and classic.

If I had to pick ONE thing though. Has to be :vivi:

I feel like the strongest part of this game is the dungeon design, which is easily the most inspired in the whole series. Just look at the Ice Cavern, Burmecia, Fossil Roo, the Desert Palace, Gurgu Volcano, Pandemonium and almost everything else. The visuals, the layouts, the riddles, the rewards... there's just so much there it's crazy.

That said, every single aspect of this game is both entirely functional and chock full of identity, in a way very few games are.

Anybody who doesn't say Quina is wrong. :colbert:

Not a fan of Quina. I know the character is there for comic relief, but it feels very tacked on compared to the rest of the humosristic moments in the game. Sort of like Jar-Jar Binks (though not nearly as bad), Quina feels like a saturday morning cartoon character shoehorned in a work that is definitely not that.

There's many things I like about FFIX, but I'd have to say the nostalgic vibe it gives, as probably the last one to carry the old school FF flag.
Other than this, good story, very, very likeable characters, amazing music and the gameplay was quite neat.

I like everything about the game. The music is soothing and romantic. The characters (most of them) are developed and likeable. The only thing worthy of complain is the difficult level. It is extremely lightweight.

I voted for the frog! I think goofiness really brought this game alive. I have to doubt those who voted music though, this game had a soundtrack that was nowhere near to as memorable as others have been.

The story and music for the most part for me. It's a fun game with a great story and timeless music. There is only one thing I'd get rid of and that's the slow load time of random encounter. VIII's load time was bad with 11 to 12 seconds, but on some battles IX pushes out a 18 second wait...eeek.

The music, just ahead of the writing. Was a very difficult decision between those two but music edged it.

The music and the characters. Though I will say that the design it is a lot of the reason why I decided to get the game. It was my first EoFF I ever played. I was at Toys R Us at the time when they a large selection of PsOne games. I would just go to the stores not knowing what was going to be there or what the games were about. FF8 and FF9 caught my eye, but I could only buy one as that was my monthly limit. I decided to go with FF9 because the characters looked more agreeable and lively. The design appealed more to me as it was less like a cyber goth porn game.

The characters, the story and Kuja. I loved the character development in the game, the story was epic (imo) and Kuja was also epic (also imo). And I love Kuja's...clothes.

I think Neil Tyson said it best when asked what he liked best about the new Cosmos TV series.

This may sounds like a cop-out answer: all of it.

To pick a favorite part would be like picking the part of a bicycle you like the best. The chain? The spokes? The handlebars? The petals? The thing won't ride without any one of them.
